VLA Observations of a Complete Sample of Radio Loud Quasars between redshifts 2.5 and 5.28: I. high-redshift sample summary and the radio images
We present high resolution (arcsecond or better) observations made with the
Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array of 123 radio-loud quasars with redshifts in the
range that form a complete flux limited sample ( mJy at 1.4 GHz or 5 GHz). Where possible, we used previous high resolution
VLA observations (mainly A array at 1.4, 5 and 8 GHz) from the NRAO archive and
re-imaged them (43 sources). For the remainder, new observations were made in
the A array at 1.4 and 5 GHz. We show images of the 61 resolved sources, and
list structural properties of all of them. Optical data from the SDSS are
available for nearly every source. This work represents a significant increase
in the number of high redshift quasars with published radio structures, and
will be used to study the properties and evolution of luminous radio sources in
the high redshift universe
Several signs suggest that Prime minister Stephen Harper is seeking to make the Conservative Party the new dominant political party in Canada. For this purpose, he has to transform the social and political organization of the country to make it more conservative and move the ideological preferences of the majority to the right. The objective of this thesis is to explain the ideological foundations of the reform strategy adopted by Harper in light of the writings of the members of the Calgary School. Because the Prime minister is close to the members of this school of thought, my hypothesis is that the public policies he implements are inspired by their convictions. Through a brief review of the literature, I clarify, in the first chapter, the meaning of the concept of ideology and establish the relevance of studying ideologies to explain political decisions. Then, I define the main types of conservatism to determine which one inspires the Calgary School and the Conservative Party. In the second chapter, I draw a portrait of the ideas promoted by the members of the Calgary School, on issues of social and economic development, on the role of the judiciary, on foreign relations and on national identity. Finally, in the third chapter, I identify the decisions taken by the Harper government in relation to these four themes since it came to power and I verify their consistency with the ideas promoted by the Calgary School

Discovery of a Kiloparsec Scale X-ray/Radio Jet in the z=4.72 Quasar GB 1428+4217
We report the discovery of a one-sided 3.6" (24 kpc, projected) long jet in
the high-redshift, z=4.72, quasar GB 1428+4217 in new Chandra X-ray and VLA
radio observations. This is the highest redshift kiloparsec-scale X-ray/radio
jet known. Analysis of archival VLBI 2.3 and 8.6 GHz data reveal a faint
one-sided jet extending out to ~200 parsecs and aligned to within ~30 deg of
the Chandra/VLA emission. The 3.6" distant knot is not detected in an archival
HST image, and its broad-band spectral energy distribution is consistent with
an origin from inverse Compton scattering of cosmic microwave background
photons for the X-rays. Assuming also equipartition between the radiating
particles and magnetic field, the implied jet Lorentz factor is ~5. This is
similar to the other two known z ~ 4 kpc-scale X-ray jet cases and smaller than
typically inferred in lower-redshift cases. Although there are still but a few
such very high-redshift quasar X-ray jets known, for an inverse Compton origin,
the present data suggest that they are less relativistic on large-scales than
their lower-redshift counterparts.Comment: ApJL, accepted, 5 pages, 3 figure
Harnessing the power of loneliness: a social functional approach to loneliness at work
Much of the current theoretical and empirical research exploring the behavioral outcomes of loneliness is based on chronic loneliness. However, nearly everyone has experienced transient feelings of loneliness throughout their life. In this dissertation I examine the social function of state loneliness and suggest that interpersonal helping is a positive outcome that results from this emotion. By drawing on theories of belonging (Baumeister & Leary, 1995; Pickett & Gardner, 2005) attributions (Weiner, 1974; Weiner, 1979), and motivation (Vroom, 1964), I propose an interactive model in which the need to belong and the attributions people make about their loneliness combine to both amplify and attenuate the impact of loneliness on interpersonal helping behavior. This model is tested in three studies with both measured and manipulated state loneliness. Implications for employees and organizations are discussed.Doctor of Philosoph
The Highest Redshift Relativistic Jets
We describe our efforts to understand large-scale (10's-100's kpc)
relativistic jet systems through observations of the highest-redshift quasars.
Results from a VLA survey search for radio jets in ~30 z>3.4 quasars are
described along with new Chandra observations of 4 selected targets.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, to appear in Extragalactic Jets: Theory and

Two Candidate High-Redshift X-ray Jets Without Coincident Radio Jets
We report the detection of extended X-ray emission from two high-redshift
radio quasars. These quasars, J1405+0415 at =3.208 and J1610+1811 at
=3.118, were observed in a Chandra snapshot survey selected from a complete
sample of the radio-brightest quasars in the overlap area of the VLA-FIRST
radio survey and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The extended X-ray emission is
located along the line connecting the core to a radio knot or hotspot, favoring
the interpretation of X-ray jets. The inferred rest frame jet X-ray
luminosities from 2--30 keV would be of order 10 erg~s if emitted
isotropically and without relativistic beaming. In the scenario of inverse
Compton scattering of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), X-ray jets without
a coincident radio counterpart may be common, and should be readily detectable
to redshifts even beyond 3.2 due to the (1+) increase of the CMB energy
density compensating for the (1+) cosmological diminution of surface
brightness. If these can be X-ray confirmed, they would be the second and third
examples of quasar X-ray jets without detection of underlying continuous radio
jets.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical

Panama Bridge Project
The Panama Bridge project has partnered with Rio Missions Panama to design a bridge for the village of La Gigi, Panama. The mountain community of La Gigi experiences heavy rainfall during the rainy seasons. A stream runs along the community, separating locals from their fields and other communities further up the mountain. While passable during dry seasons, the stream floods and becomes impassable after heavy rains. The residents are effectively cut off from their livelihoods, church, health services, and other communities during this time.
To accommodate this need, the Panama Bridge Team has spent the 2019-2020 school year designing an aluminum truss bridge, spanning 90 feet. The design includes a unique construction strategy to deal with challenging site constraints.https://mosaic.messiah.edu/engr2020/1020/thumbnail.jp
Body Burdens of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers among Urban Anglers
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been widely used in the United States and worldwide as flame retardants. Recent PBDE production figures show that worldwide use has increased. To determine whether fish consumption is a source of PBDE exposure for humans, a cross-sectional epidemiologic study of New York and New Jersey urban anglers was conducted during the summers of 2001â2003. Frequency of local fish consumption was assessed by questionnaire, and blood samples for PBDE analysis were collected from 94 anglers fishing from piers on the lower Hudson River and Newark Bay. We analyzed PBDEs by gas chromatographyâisotope dilutionâhigh-resolution mass spectrometry. The congeners found in anglersâ serum at the highest concentrations were, by International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry numbers, BDE-47, BDE-153, and BDE-99. Anglers reporting consumption of local fish had higher, but nonstatistically significantly different, concentrations of PBDEs than did anglers who did not eat local fish. For some congeners (BDE-100 and BDE-153), we observed moderate doseâresponse relationships between serum PBDE levels and frequency of reported fish intake. These findings suggest that consumption of locally caught fish is not a major route of human exposure for this study population
