Geotechnical test embankment on soft marine clay in Newington-Dover, New Hampshire

During the fall of 2012, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation built a test embankment for the new alignment segment of the proposed Exit 6 Southbound On-Ramp site off Route 4 in Newington-Dover, New Hampshire. The purpose of the test embankment is to determine effective and efficient treatment for the long-term ground settlement of the local soft marine clay native to the site. In addition to the test embankment, prefabricated vertical drains were installed to allow pore water from the soil to seep out and accelerate time-rate consolidation. Various in situ field testing methods were performed including: piezocone penetration, flat plate dilatometer and field shear vane. Additionally, consolidation testing was performed in the laboratory with undisturbed samples of the clay. Settlement calculations were performed to compare with field values. This research will benefit construction of the site, in addition to many other upcoming sites of construction in the local area

Experience and Awareness of Musculoskeletal Disorders among ETSU Student and Faculty Visual Artists

    Get PDF
Musculoskeletal disorders are a chronic and debilitating issue; these injuries can result in pain and disability that affect daily life and the ability to work in certain careers. Visual artists are no exception to this reality. However, reliable research is scarce regarding this population. The purpose of this study is to examine the level of experience and awareness of visual artists regarding the subject of musculoskeletal disorders and ergonomics within their chosen career field. The methods employed for this paper involved a survey where participants answered questions about workplace ergonomics, movements, and experience of muscle pains. Further indications of research may result from this study involving the assessment, diagnosis, implementation, and intervention in the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders among visual artists

The General Education of the Science Teacher

Volumes have been written on this topic and it would be the height of temerity to assume that anything really new could be contributed in this paper. Opinions, of course, differ and one justification for this discussion lies in the exchange of ideas which it may provoke. Another reason for discussing this subject stems from the present movement in colleges and secondary schools to inject the concept of so-called general education into the curriculum. The best-known effort of this sort is centered in Harvard College and has been reported in the volume General Education in a Free Society. The general education idea postulates that, regardless of the vocational aims of the student, certain basic training should be given to everyone

    An Experiment in Survey Science

The objectives of higher education are being critically examined these days. In an earlier time culture was the attainment most sought - a culture which was rooted in the classical languages, Greek and Latin. Utilitarian subjects rated but little following. And the sciences such as they were, thrived around the philosophical round table and not in the laboratory. Gradually the ideals of a liberal education have shifted to a new emphasis and with this shift the laboratory sciences are coming into their own. It is now generally recognized that every student who seeks a broad, well balanced college education must devote some time to the laboratory sciences, both physical and biological. In the liberal arts, nonprofessional college the problem of the distribution of subjects seems to be fairly well solved. On the other hand the professional college - and I refer especially to teacher training institutions - still faces the question of what price science
