The Trial and Execution of Thomas Bird in Portland, Maine, 1790: The First Execution under the United State Constitution

Surprisingly few accounts exist of the execution of an Englishman named Thomas Bird in Portland in 1790, even though Bird\u27s execution was the first of the nation\u27s young federal court system. The newly established U.S. District Court for the District of Maine tried Bird for the \u27\u27piratical murder of Captain John Connor, master of the English slave-trading sloop, Mary. Crew members killed Connor and threw his body overboard off the canst of Africa in 1789. When authorities captured the Mary off the coast of Maine, they arrested three men: Bird; Hans Hanson, a Norwegian; and Josiah Jackson, an American. Yet the court only tried Bird and Hanson, and Bird alone was convicted, though he swore in his dying statement that he was innocent. Jerry Genesio, a freelance writer, recently retired historian/abstractor, and former employee of the Portland Public Library, has written numerous articles for The Lewiston Daily Sun, The Bridgton News, Yankee Magazine, New England Outdoors, and other periodicals, as well as an organizational history of a national non-traditional military veterans\u27 group titled Veterans for Peace: The First Decade. Plants with less Chlorophyll: a global change perspective

Get PDF
The necessary reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions may lead in the future to an increase in solar irradiance (solar brightening). Anthropogenic aerosols (and their precursors) that cause solar dimming are in fact often co‐emitted with GHGs. While the reduction of GHG emissions is expected to slow down the ongoing increase in the greenhouse effect, an increased surface irradiance due to reduced atmospheric aerosol load might occur in the most populated areas of the earth. Increased irradiance may lead to air warming, favour the occurrence of heatwaves and increase the evaporative demand of the atmosphere. This is why effective and sustainable solar radiation management strategies to reflect more light back to space should be designed, tested and implemented together with GHG emission mitigation. Here we propose that new plants (crops, orchards and forests) with low‐chlorophyll (Chl) content may provide a realistic, sustainable and relatively simple solution to increase surface reflectance of large geographical areas via changes in surface albedo. This may finally offset all or part of the expected local solar brightening. While high‐Chl content provides substantial competitive advantages to plants growing in their natural environment, new plants with low‐Chl content may be successfully used in agriculture and silviculture and be as productive as the green wildtypes (or even more). The most appropriate strategies to obtain highly productive and highly reflective plants are discussed in this paper and their mitigation potential is examined together with the challenges associated with their introduction in agriculture

Trabajo final integrador.

A multi-methodological protocol to characterize PDO olive oils

An analytical approach including Panel Test, Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was proposed to characterize Italian “Colline Pontine” PDO olive oils (40 samples) of two consecutive crop years. Our approach has evidenced the high quality of these olive oils. Only 6 of 40 olive oils samples were defined as “defective” by the official Panel Test due to the detection of negative sensory attributes. The low variability of isotopic data monitored by IRMS confirmed that the olive oil samples all came from a limited geographical area. NMR spectra did not evidence any chemical composition anomaly in the investigated samples. In order to assess the influence of harvesting year over the olive oil chemical composition, the NMR analysis was extended to other 22 olive oil samples of a third harvesting year. NMR data were submitted to two different statistical methods, namely, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and principal component analysis (PCA) allowing olive oils of three consecutive harvesting years to be grouped

Through the meeting of Anna Banti — a 20th century writer and art historian — and Artemisia Gentileschi — a 17th century painter —, in Artemisia, one of the former’s novels, Emanuela Genesio questions the complexity of the exchanges between writing and painting. Indeed, the novelist refers to literature in order to discuss art, while using painting in order to form a narration, tying at the same time her own autobiography to that of the painter

The author is interested in the specific case of the city of Turin and in the expansion in recent years of its cultural policy towards the field of contemporary art; with among other things the creation of new exhibition venues, as well as international events. The city of Turin’s policy seems to be an exemplary case of contemporary art “instrumentalization” in the name of promotion of the city on the international scene. At the same time though, it is binding together the goals of contemporary art with the process of economic globalization
