Materialni vidiki transnacionalnih družbenih polj. Uvod

    Get PDF
The author argues that ethnographic insights into migrants’ personal relations achieved through objects, and their involvement in social networks proved through objects, can open up new avenues of understanding and contribute to the creation of new conceptual lenses in studies of migration. Conceptual and methodological issues are discussed, and the themes outlined, that connect ethnographic examples presented in the contributions to this section. Most important is the reconsideration of the migrants’ presupposed collective identities. The claims to and representations of (usually ethnic) belonging may be detached from the ways in which people fashion their transnational social fields.

Geological modelling of the Triassic Stuttgart Formation at the Ketzin CO2 storage site, Germany

AbstractAt Ketzin, about 25km west of Berlin (Germany), the saline aquifer of the Triassic Stuttgart Formation is used for a carbon dioxide storage research project. The formation is lithologically very heterogeneous, reflecting a complex fluviatile facies distribution pattern. We focused on the development of a primary geological reservoir model as commonly employed for dynamic modelling during the planning and early injection stages of a storage project. Due to the need to capture the complex geometrical structure of the Stuttgart Formation, despite limited availability of exploration data, stochastic modelling techniques were employed. Firstly, we modelled the facies architecture of the reservoir and, secondly, assigned porosity and permeability values to the facies types included in the model. Petrophysical parameters for each facies type were quantified using site-specific porosity histograms and related permeability functions. The comparison of dynamic flow simulation results and well-test interpretations, and furthermore with the first observed monitoring data, helped to focus the modelling work and to adjust monitoring plans. Modelling is understood as an iterative process, both with respect to data arrival and progressively improving the understanding of the reservoir, but also with respect to the problem which the model is being designed to address

Examining Narratives on the Homestead Strike

The Homestead Strike of 1892 is one of the most important moments in American labor history, highlighting the need for labor rights and better working conditions. Using the University of Pittsburgh Archives, this project looks at the experiences of the strikers of the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers (AAISW) and the Pinkerton detectives during the strike, as well as what motivated strikers and management in the events leading up to the violent encounter

Coupled Dynamic Flow and Geomechanical Simulations for an Integrated Assessment of CO2 Storage Impacts in a Saline Aquifer

Pore pressure variation resulting from geological CO2 storage may compromise reservoir, caprock and fault integrity. Therefore, we investigate the mechanical impact of industrial-scale CO2 storage at a prospective Danish site by coupled 3D hydro-mechanical simulations carried out by two independent modelling groups. Even though the two chosen modelling strategies are not identical, simulation results demonstrate that storage integrity is maintained at any time. Vertical displacements are mainly determined by hydraulic fault conductivity influencing spatial pore pressure elevation. The introduced fault zone implementation in the hydro- mechanical model allows for localization of potential leakage pathways for formation fluids along the fault plane

Investigating mechanisms of change in implementation processes : theoretical and methodological perspectives

    Get PDF
Background: The implementation of research findings into practice is complex and challenging. Recurrent reports point to the failure of implementation and a costly gap between current knowledge and the services provided to end users. To overcome these challenges and to improve our understanding of implementation, it has been suggested that researchers make use of theory and study the change mechanisms that describe how and why implementation strategies influence outcomes in a specific context. Yet, such studies remain scarce. Aim: The overall aim of this thesis is to investigate change mechanisms in implementation. This is done through a theoretically based analysis of how behavior change interventions (study I and II) and leadership style (study III) influence employees’ initial (study I and III) and sustained (study II and III) use of a teamwork work process (study I and II) and an occupational health intervention (study III). Methods: Teamwork implementation was studied with a comparable case study design (study I), and teamwork sustainability was further studied with a design based on realistic evaluation (study II). Data were collected with interviews, observations and document analysis. Both studies used the theoretical framework DCOM® to analyze behavior change interventions and observations of teamwork behaviors as the outcome. The influence of line managers’ leadership style on implementation was investigated in a longitudinal intervention study (study III). Data were collected from questionnaire surveys at baseline and follow-up at 12 months. Employees’ use of the web-based intervention was collected from electronic data logs and used as the outcome. Findings: An implementation strategy based on communication, daily feedback, ongoing problem-solving and adjustments to the teamwork intervention was found to be successful for the implementation of teamwork. The fallback in the implementation strategy had a negative influence on sustainability. The analysis describes how and why the implementation strategy influenced implementation outcomes in a complex organizational context. Line managers’ supportive change activities, which are directly related to the intervention implemented, had a significant influence on employees’ initial and sustained use of the web-based occupational health intervention. The line managers’ transformational leadership did not have a direct influence on use but an indirect influence mediated by their supportive change activities. Conclusions: The DCOM® framework and realistic evaluation provided useful theoretical and methodological frameworks for the investigation and understanding of how the implementation strategy and contextual factors interact and cause behavior change. The findings imply that an implementation strategy should be based on a theoretical understanding of change mechanisms and an analysis of context to successfully influence behavior change. Furthermore, the findings points to the dynamics of context and suggests that context needs to be continuously updated and in turn used to guide updates to the implementation strategy. Finally, the thesis underlines the importance of line managers’ dedicated focus on supportive change activities and challenges previous research suggesting that transformational leadership is the leadership style of choice for successful implementation

    KULTURALIZACIJA MEDITERANSKOG PROSTORA

    Get PDF
