Thus the size and complexity of embedded systems steadily increases. To cope with this development, comfortable software engineering tools are being developed that allow a more functionality-oriented development of applications. The paper demonstrates how worst-case execution time (WCET) analysis is integrated into such a high-level application design and simulation tool MATLAB/Simulink-thus providing a higher-level interface to WCET analysis. The MATLAB/Simulink extensions compute and display worst-case timing data for all blocks of a MATLAB/Simulink simulation, which gives the developer of an application valuable feedback about the correct timing of the application being developed. The solution facilitates a fully-automated WCET analysis, i.e., in contrast to existing approaches the programmer does not have to provide path information
Training Passive Photonic Reservoirs with Integrated Optical Readout
As Moore's law comes to an end, neuromorphic approaches to computing are on
the rise. One of these, passive photonic reservoir computing, is a strong
candidate for computing at high bitrates (> 10 Gbps) and with low energy
consumption. Currently though, both benefits are limited by the necessity to
perform training and readout operations in the electrical domain. Thus, efforts
are currently underway in the photonic community to design an integrated
optical readout, which allows to perform all operations in the optical domain.
In addition to the technological challenge of designing such a readout, new
algorithms have to be designed in order to train it. Foremost, suitable
algorithms need to be able to deal with the fact that the actual on-chip
reservoir states are not directly observable. In this work, we investigate
several options for such a training algorithm and propose a solution in which
the complex states of the reservoir can be observed by appropriately setting
the readout weights, while iterating over a predefined input sequence. We
perform numerical simulations in order to compare our method with an ideal
baseline requiring full observability as well as with an established black-box
optimization approach (CMA-ES).Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and

The United States\u27 Response to Humanitarian Refugee Obligations: Inconsistent Application of Legal Standards and Its Consequences
In 1948, the countries of the United Nations ( U.N. ) adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights ( Declaration ). The Declaration formally asserted the right to seek and receive asylum from persecution. At the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees ( 1951 Convention ), this right was developed into the principle of non-refoulement, whereby signatories agreed not to return anyone to a country in which there was a danger of persecution. Although the principle of non-refoulement requires countries to give legal status to refugees within their borders, countries have discretion in determining who meets the definition of a refugee. By altering how refugee status is determined, countries can, in effect, control and limit whom they admit and the humanitarian obligation they assume. This control is of great interest to the United States, which has historically been opposed to accepting unquantifiable and uncontrollable obligations. This Note seeks to draw attention to the intentional application of different standards for refugee determinations and proposes a fairer alternative to achieving the interests of the United States. Part I provides general background on the refugee issue. Part I.A discusses the different aspects of international refugee law. Part I.A.1 describes the humanitarian concerns associated with refugees and their plight. Part I.A.2 details the formation of the United Nations High Commission for Refugees ( UNHCR ) as an international response to these concerns. Part I.B discusses the practical solutions currently used to handle protracted refugee situations, including refugee camps, voluntary repatriation, integration, and resettlement, and further addresses the duty of non-refoulement and the disparity in obligations this creates for different countries. Part I.C examines the United States\u27 relationship with refugee situations, and looks in particular at its asylum policy, its resettlement policy, and the degree to which it fulfills its humanitarian obligations. Part II analyses the United States\u27 policies toward refugees, specifically comparing the legal standards used for adjudication in domestic applications for asylum with those used in overseas applications for resettlement. It concludes that the United States policy achieves predictability, but (1) runs contrary to the spirit of non-refoulement, (2) increases the burden of unpredictability for other countries, and (3) increases inconsistent adjudication. Part III presents a proposal that would help to achieve predictability while eliminating some adverse effects of the current system
pseuCo Book: An Interactive Learning Experience
Software tools and apps are pervading educational technology in
many areas, not least in the field of computer science education.
However, many of these tools have a very narrow scope and lack
context, or only work as add-ons to textbooks and other course materials. This paper advocates an alternative: a truly interactive textbook experience where interactive demonstrations and exercises
are interwoven with more classical textual elements. We present a
framework that provides authors with the infrastructure for writing
such books, and present pseuCo Book, an interactive book for teaching concurrent programming. The effectiveness of this approach is
demonstrated by a user study encompassing a detailed empirical
evaluation
Profiling the Sangha. Institutional and Non-Institutional Tendencies in Early Buddhist Teachings
Students of Buddhism use to discover early on in their studies that it is misleading to speak of a 'church' in early Buddhism. Christian ecclesiastical phenomena like priests, Sunday services, sermons, parishes and communal prayers, let alone a centrally organized institution like the Roman catholic church, did not exist in what we know of early Buddhism. Instead of a church, one is tempted to say, early Buddhism possessed the sangha, the monastic community. Basic religious functions the church fulfils in Christianity seem to be fulfilled by the sangha: as a member of this group, one follows the ideal path to salvation, and it is the task of the community to preserve and hand over the teaching of the Buddha (the dhamma) to following generations. It seems obvious that the sangha constitutes the central, if not the only religious institution of early Buddhism
