    Impact of queue buffer size awareness on single and multi service real-time routing protocols for WSNs

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are increasingly used and will certainly be part of our everyday lives. Many routing protocols were designed with respect to WSNs capacities to allow the achievement of numerous applications. One of the not well investigated areas in WSNs is the queue management issue. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis of the impact of queue buffer size awareness on the Quality of Service (QoS) of real-time (RT) routing protocols in WSNs. The studied protocols are SPEED and its extension Multipath Multi-speed (MMSPEED). SPEED protocol yields RT routing for only one class of traffic, by maintaining a desired packet’s progression speed (PS) across the WSN. On the other hand, MMSPEED protocol extends SPEED by offering multiple types of service to packets according to their class of traffic. The main contribution is that the routing decision is made on neighbors’ available queue buffer size at each level in addition to PS metric. Simulations have proved that the two metrics are compatible, the routing decision is efficient in case of single service protocol and multiservice one and improves two QoS domains namely timeliness and reliability

    Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome in a spontaneous pregnancy with invasive mole: report of a case

    It is known that most cases of Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) are associated with the therapies for ovulation induction. However, OHSS may rarely be associated with a spontaneous ovulatory cycle, usually in the case of multiple gestations, hypothyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome. We report a case of severe OHSS in spontaneous pregnancy with invasive mole in a 34 years old woman. The clinical picture showed abdominal pain, massive ascites, nausea, dyspnea and amenorrhea. After imaging examinations and laboratory tests, the diagnosis was established. The patient was managed expectantly with no complications. Although spontaneous ovarian hyperstimulation is a rare entity, it is important that the physician recognizes this condition. Prompt diagnosis and successful management is likely to avoid serious complications, which may develop rapidly

    "Explorers of Unknown Planets": Practices and Politics of Artificial Intelligence in Visual Arts

    International audienceAlongside recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), a new art practice has emerged in recent years that borrows and transforms these advances in the production of artworks. The actors of this emergent practice are coming from contemporary art, media and digital arts. These artists have developed an original practice of AI within their creative field. In this article, we propose a qualitative study to explore the nature of this practice. We interviewed five internationally renowned artists about how AI is integrated into their work. Through a thematic analysis of the interviews, we first find that their practice relies on crafting algorithms and data as materials. We uncover how they explicitly use this material unpredictability rather than avoid it. Secondly, we highlight the politics of their practice that consist of resisting the culture of AI research, as well as its inherent power dynamics. We also highlight how their relationship with the technology is imbued with ethics and how they rethink their role with respect to the technology. In this paper, we aim to provide the CSCW community with a way to expand the framework in which AI can be understood not only as a tool but also as cultural and political design material

    La rupture utĂ©rine sur utĂ©rus sain au 2Ăšme et 3Ăšme trimestre de grossesse est une complication obstĂ©tricale rare et grave mettant en jeu les pronostics vitaux maternels et fƓtaux et le devenir obstĂ©trical des patientes en l'absence de diagnostic et de prise en charge immĂ©diate. Elle survient majoritairement sur un utĂ©rus cicatriciel et reste anecdotique sur un utĂ©rus sain. Nous rapportons le cas d'une patiente primigeste ayant prĂ©sentĂ© une rupture utĂ©rine sur un utĂ©rus non cicatriciel lors d'un dĂ©clenchement de travail par le misoprostol pour mort fƓtale in utero (MFIU) sur retard de croissance intra utĂ©rin (RCIU) et oligoamnios sĂ©vĂšre Ă  31 semaines d'amĂ©norrhĂ©e (SA).     Optimisation multicritÚres de la qualité de service dans les réseaux de capteurs multimédia sans fil

    Thanks to the valuable advances in Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems coupled with their convergence to wireless communication systems, the Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). In the WSN context, all the efforts are made in order to propose energy-efficient solutions. With the recent developments in CMOS technology, low-cost imaging sensors have been developed. As a result, a new derivative of the WSN, which is the Wireless Video Sensor Network (WVSN), has been proposed. The particularities of the video data as well as the inherent constraints of the nodes have introduced new challenges. In this thesis, we propose two cross-layer based solutions for video delivery over the WVSN. The first solution proposes a new energy efficient and adaptive video compression scheme dedicated to the WVSNs, based on the H.264/AVC video compression standard. The video stream is then handled by an enhanced version of MMSPEED protocol, that we propose and note EQBSA-MMSPEED. Performance evaluation shows that the lifetime of the network is extended by 33%, while improving the video quality of the received stream by 12%. In the second solution, we enrich our compression scheme with mathematical models to predict the energy consumption and the video distortion during the encoding and the transmission phases. The video stream is then handled by a novel energy efficient and improved reliability routing protocol, that we note ERMM. Compared to a basic approach, this solution is extending the network lifetime by 15%, while improving the quality of the received video stream by 35%.Les progrĂšs rĂ©alisĂ©s en systĂšmes micro-Ă©lectro-mĂ©caniques couplĂ©s avec leur convergence vers les systĂšmes de communication sans fil, ont permis l'Ă©mergence des rĂ©seaux de capteurs sans fil (RCSF). Les contraintes de ces rĂ©seaux font que tous les efforts soient fournis pour proposer des solutions Ă©conomes en Ă©nergie. Avec les rĂ©cents dĂ©veloppements des technologies CMOS, des capteurs d'images Ă  faible coĂ»t ont Ă©tĂ© dĂ©veloppĂ©s. En consĂ©quence, un nouveau dĂ©rivĂ© des RCSF, qui sont les RĂ©seaux de Capteurs VidĂ©o Sans Fil (RCVSF), a Ă©tĂ© proposĂ©. La particularitĂ© des donnĂ©es vidĂ©o ainsi que les contraintes inhĂ©rentes aux nƓuds ont introduit de nouveaux dĂ©fis. Dans cette thĂšse, nous proposons deux solutions basĂ©es sur l'approche inter-couches pour la livraison de la vidĂ©o sur les RCVSF. La premiĂšre solution propose un nouveau schĂ©ma de compression vidĂ©o adaptatif, efficace en Ă©nergie et basĂ© sur la norme de compression vidĂ©o H.264/AVC. Le flux vidĂ©o est ensuite gĂ©rĂ© par une version amĂ©liorĂ©e du protocole MMSPEED que nous proposons et notons EQBSA-MMSPEED. Les rĂ©sultats des simulations montrent que la durĂ©e de vie du rĂ©seau est Ă©tendue de 33%, tout en amĂ©liorant la qualitĂ© du flux vidĂ©o reçu de 12%. Dans la deuxiĂšme solution, nous enrichissons le schĂ©ma de compression de modĂšles mathĂ©matiques pour prĂ©voir la consommation d'Ă©nergie et la distorsion de l'image lors des phases d'encodage et de transmission. Le flux vidĂ©o est gĂ©rĂ© par un nouveau protocole de routage efficace en Ă©nergie et Ă  fiabilitĂ© amĂ©liorĂ©e notĂ© ERMM. ComparĂ©e Ă  une approche basique, cette solution rĂ©alise une extension de la durĂ©e de vie du rĂ©seau de 15%, tout en amĂ©liorant la qualitĂ© du flux vidĂ©o reçu de 35%

    Migration intra-pĂ©ritonĂ©al d’un dispositif intra utĂ©rin diagnostiquĂ© 20 ans aprĂšs l'insertion: Ă  propos d’un cas

    Le dispositif intra-utérin (DIU) est une des méthodes contraceptives les plus efficaces et les plus utilisé à travers le monde : environ 100 millions d'utilisatrices. La perforation reste exceptionnelle ùpres la pose d'un  DIU cependant c'est une des complications les plus graves. Nous rapportant le cas d'une patiente de 49 ans, notion de pose de stérilet il y a 20 ans, suivie en oncologie pour un carcinome canalaire infiltrant du sein ayant bénéficiée d'un patey puis chimiothérapie adjuvante actuellement sous hormonothérapie, qui dans le cadre du bilan d'extension, un scanner thoraco-abdomino-pelvienne a objectivé la présence d'un DIU en sous hépatique. Sous guidage coelioscopique, on a réussie à retirer le DIU qui était enchùssé dans l'épiploon au niveau de la gouttiÚre pariéto-colique droite. Nous insistons à travers cette observation et sous la lumiÚre de la revue de la littérature sur l'efficacité et l'innocuité du DIU lorsque la technique et les indications sont rigoureusement  respectées, mais aussi sur une des complications rarissime de la pose du DIU, et à mettre en évidence le rÎle diagnostic et thérapeutique de la coelioscopie dans la prise en charge de ces migrations.Key words: DIU, migration intra-péritonéale, coelioscopi

    Appendicite aigue et grossesse extra utĂ©rine simultanĂ©e: a propos d’un cas rare

    L'association d'une appendicite aigue et une grossesse extra utérine est rare, seulement une vingtaine de cas ont été rapportés dans la littérature. Nous présentons un cas d'une patiente de 27 ans opérée pour suspicion de grossesse extra utérine droite, le diagnostic d'appendicite aigue a été fait en peropératoire devant la constatation d'un appendice enflé accolé à la masse latéroutérine. A travers ce cas rapporté et une revue de la littérature, nous mettons le point sur la nécessité de penser à l'appendicite aigue associée devant un tableau évoquant une grossesse extra utérine surtout à droite en raison de la relation étiopathogénique entre ces deux pathologies responsables de douleurs aigues bien que leur association reste rare.Pan African Medical Journal 2013; 14:3

    Assessing the reliability of the Laban Movement Analysis system

    The Laban Movement Analysis system (LMA) is a widely used system for the description of human movement. Here we present results of an empirical analysis of the reliability of the LMA system. Firstly, we developed a directed graph-based representation for the formalization of LMA. Secondly, we implemented a custom video annotation tool for stimulus presentation and annotation of the formalized LMA. Using these two elements, we conducted an experimental assessment of LMA reliability. In the experimental assessment of the reliability, experts–Certified Movement Analysts (CMA)–were tasked with identifying the differences between a “neutral” movement and the same movement executed with a specific variation in one of the dimensions of the LMA parameter space. The videos represented variations on the pantomimed movement of knocking at a door or giving directions. To be as close as possible to the annotation practice of CMAs, participants were given full control over the number of times and order in which they viewed the videos. The LMA annotation was captured by means of the video annotation tool that guided the participants through the LMA graph by asking them multiple-choice questions at each node. Participants were asked to first annotate the most salient difference (round 1), and then the second most salient one (round 2) between a neutral and gesture and the variation. To quantify the overall reliability of LMA, we computed Krippendorff’s α. The quantitative data shows that the reliability, depending on how the two rounds are integrated, ranges between a weak and an acceptable reliability of LMA. The analysis of viewing behavior showed that, despite relatively large differences at the inter-individual level, there is no simple relationship between viewing behavior and individual performance (quantified as the level of agreement of the individual with the dominant rating). This research advances the state of the art in formalizing and implementing a reliability measure for the Laban Movement Analysis system. The experimental study we conducted allows identifying some of the strengths and weaknesses of the widely used movement coding system. Additionally, we have gained useful insights into the assessment procedure itself
