Body, nature and rebellion: The somatic component in Adorno´s thought and negative dialectics

En este trabajo se pretende explorar algunas de las relaciones del pensamiento de Adorno y su Dialéctica Negativa, con el “lugar” asignado al cuerpo y la naturaleza al interior del régimen de experiencia/ existencia que caracteriza la racionalidad afirmativa/ identitaria en sus más diversas manifestaciones y los distintos órdenes de lo epistémico, la ética, estética e incluso elementos libidinales. Igualmente, se pondera la necesidad de reconstruir dicho “lugar”, mediante una crítica inmanente del idealismo kantiano y el racionalismo cartesiano, en orden a descifrar el “componente somático” como un campo de fuerzas soterrado y guardado bajo una secreta y paradójica combinación: el ser humano como “factor” de la naturaleza que lo excede allende su voluntad de dominio, pero también como sujeto (im)posible en el ámbito de lo político, es decir, como hybris, o desmesuraThis paper aims to explore some of the links between Adorno’s thought and its Negative Dialectic, with the “place” assigned to the body and nature within the regime of experience/existence that characterizes affirmative/identity rationality in its most diverse manifestations and the different orders of the epistemic, ethics, aesthetics and even libidinal elements. Planeamiento Constructivo del Revestimiento del Túnel de Conducción Principal del Proyecto Hidroeléctrico Balsa Inferior

Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción, 2012.El presente documento muestra paso a paso la realización de la planificación de la construcción del revestimiento del túnel de conducción principal del Proyecto Hidroeléctrico Balsa Inferior (PHBI), propiedad de la Compañía Nacional de Fuerza y Luz S.A (CNFL). El Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) es el ente encargado de la construcción de las obras de conducción y almacenamiento de agua y un consorcio brasileño OAS es el encargado de la construcción de la presa y la casa de máquinas. El trabajo se enfoca en la planificación de la logística de las actividades, así como la identificación de los recursos necesarios para la construcción de las obras. Se realizó la observación de las tareas que se realizan actualmente en la construcción del revestimiento de los túneles de los desgravadores del PHBI con el objeto de señalar las virtudes y debilidades del proceso, en miras a la planificación a llevar a cabo. Para completar la información requerida se tomó como referencia las experiencias adquiridas en otros proyectos de generación eléctrica construidos por el ICE. Se definió la construcción del revestimiento en 7 etapas distintas. El plazo para su construcción abarca de julio del presente año a mayo del próximo. Parte de éstas labores deberán ser ejecutadas simultáneamente con la excavación. Se elaboró el Plan de Obra (PO) del revestimiento del túnel. Éste documento es un requisito para la construcción de cada obra del proyecto. Entre los principales aspectos que incluye están: descripción de la obra, metodología constructiva, planeamiento y control, presupuesto, gestión ambiental y seguridad ocupacional. Desarrollo de una Aplicación y Procedimiento para Control de Costos de los Proyectos Constructivos de KIREBE

Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción, 2008.KIREBE´s company was presenting problems for the deficient managing of control of costs that was carried out in its constructive projects; that’s because, the practice directed was realized here, and look for deficiencies that this process had and to give them a solution. Part of this labour, was investigate on the procedures used by each of the departments and principally in circumstances that were involving the Cost department. As well as also, explore on the way of executing that the department of costs had at the moment. Principally, problems like mistake of instructives, programming of work, communication and the storage of information of requisitions, modifications and unforeseen situations, were found during the realized research and it was not allowing to conclude on the advance that project had. Therefore, by information found, it was possible to develop a new procedure of control of costs and an application computacional that was facilitating the obtaining of information; and in a consecutive way, they were serving for the posterior analysis on the advance of the project. A suitable mechanism of control of costs adjusted to the way of working of the company, with communication and teamwork, is possible to achieve the success of the project and in consequence the company.Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica. "Native speakerism": repercusiones en el auto-concepto de estudiantes de inglés como lengua extranjera

In Costa Rican universities, English as a foreign language (EFL) programs are often filled with practices and discourses that idealize native speakers of English and construct them as the models to follow. In these programs, instructors’ overreliance on native speaker proficiency models create unrealistic standards that can misinform EFL learners’ views of their proficiency as English speakers. As these students ‘fail’ to align their present L2 proficiency to the ideal praised in the classroom, they develop negative self-concepts, which lead them to characterize their proficiency as deficient and incomplete. In this paper, I examine tacitly validated practices and circulating narratives in two academic EFL programs in a public Costa Rican university regarding learners’ expected EFL proficiency and problematize the repercussions these unspoken expectations may have for these students’ overall self-concept as L2 speakers. In light of the results that I discuss herein, I advocate for the abandonment of the native speakerism trend that still prevails in the EFL programs in question and for the construction of EFL teaching practices that provide EFL learners with the validation they deserve for their expanding linguistic repertoire.En las universidades costarricenses, los programas de inglés como lengua extranjera están plagados de prácticas y discursos que idealizan al nativo hablante del inglés y lo posicionan como el modelo a seguir. En estos programas, el uso constante y exclusivo de modelos nativo hablantes por parte de los profesores crean estándares poco reales que pueden distorsionar la percepción que los estudiantes tienen sobre sus capacidades en el idioma inglés. Esto debido a que cuando los estudiantes no logran alinear sus destrezas en la segunda lengua a la proficiencia que implícitamente se idealiza en la clase, estos desarrollan un auto-concepto negativo que los lleva a describir sus propias destrezas lingüísticas como deficientes e incompletas. Es por eso que en este estudio, me doy a la tarea de analizar narrativas circulantes en dos programas académicos de inglés como lengua extrajera de una universidad pública en Costa Rica, en cuanto al nivel de competencia en inglés que los estudiantes perciben se espera de ellos al terminar el programa, y problematizo las repercusiones que estas expectativas implícitas tienen en el auto-concepto de los discentes. A la luz de los resultados que aquí presento, abogo por la erradicación de la tendencia de idealizar al nativo hablante del idioma inglés que aún prevalece in los programas en cuestión y por la construcción de prácticas pedagógicas que validen las destrezas que los estudiantes desarrollan en programas de inglés como lengua extranjera

C1, SAP and ZiCo: structural studies of three metal‑binding proteins from a crystallographic perspective

Atomic resolution models of proteins are crucial for understanding their biological mechanisms and provide insights into the relationship between protein sequence and structure. Many protein structures incorporate metal ions, exploiting their unique chemistry as reaction centres or for structural stability. This thesis describes the progress made towards solving the structures of three such metal-binding proteins by means of X-ray crystallography. Complement component C1 is a large protein complex that initiates the first line of immune defence and requires calcium for structural stability. Fragments of C1 have already been solved at high resolution, but there are no accurate models of the assembled complex. In this work, a new method for purifying intact C1 from human serum was developed and the purified complex was characterised by various methods. Finally, attempts were made to crystallise native human C1 with a view to obtaining high-resolution structures of the entire complex. Serum amyloid P is another serum protein, also thought to be involved in the immune response. It is often found associated with amyloid deposits, although SAP binds a variety of ligands in a calcium-dependent manner. While the structure of SAP has been determined, its physiological function is still not fully understood. SAP was purified using established methods and its ligand-binding properties were investigated under various conditions using dynamic light scattering, in an attempt to gather more information about the possible function of this molecule. Finally, ZiCo is a small peptide that was designed to switch between a multimeric coiled coil and a monomeric zinc finger fold on binding zinc. The system has been characterised extensively in solution, but high-resolution structures are required to validate the design. ZiCo was crystallised and diffraction data were collected. The structure of the peptide was partially solved, indicating that the multimeric form of the ZiCo peptide is indeed a trimeric coiled coil
