    Dionysus Torn to Pieces: An Examination of The Sound and the Fury in Light of the Philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche

    Over the course of this thesis the author considers the problem of truth in life as manifested in William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury by means of the Nietzschean conception of the Dionysian. The examination unfolds in a sequential analysis of the novel’s four sections, an analysis framed by Nietzsche’s four theses on “‘Reason’ in Philosophy:” the author considers the first section (Ben) symbolic of man’s subversion to what is directly before his eyes, and yet discovers in Ben’s idiocy a refutation of that same apparent reality in a presently-realized past, personified in Ben’s sister, Caddy; the bounds and liberties of perspective realized, the author considers how in the second section (Quentin) the limits and illusions of perspective defy rationality, and turn cultural truths into the heralds of their own apparent destruction yet aesthetic apotheosis; in the third section (Jason), the author discovers the hollow core of Jason’s morality, and ultimately recognizes in the final brother’s illusions and rationalities a meaningless martyrdom of a present believed by Jason to be denied him by the past; the author ultimately discovers what meaning the three brothers’ perspectives signify—namely, Pandora’s solace—in the novel’s blacks—specifically, Dilsey—before confronting the nihilistic implications of Ben’s recurring agony and bliss in the novel’s torturous final scene. The author concludes that the ultimate depravity of the novel, when considered the effect of the artist’s journey through the brothers’ purely perspectival realities, renders both truth and appearance moot in the fruitfulness, agony, and destruction of life. This allows the author not to deprive The Sound and the Fury of its depths of experience, but actually celebrate those depths as the necessary effect of life within a culture hostile to life

    Outcomes and Experiences of an RN to BSN Online Cohort: An Academic-Practice Partnership

    Abstract This article describes the result of an academic-practice partnership between a School of Nursing (SON) and a University Medical Center (UMC) for the purpose of promoting BSN education in response to the Institute of Medicine’s recommendation that 80% of RNs hold a baccalaureate degree or higher by 2020. The mutually beneficial partnership worked together to offer a pilot online RN-BSN nursing program, increase the number of BSNs in the workforce, and to collect information from RN-BSN students returning to school about their challenges, recommendations for future programs, and why they were interested in returning to school. The BSN graduates reported a renewed interest in nursing, opportunities for advancement, and the importance of a support system for RNs planning to return to school. The BSN graduates identified barriers for returning to school included finances, lack of knowledge related to technology, and challenges of maintaining work-life balance

    Use of Automated Machine Guidance within the Transportation Industry

    Automated machine guidance (AMG) links sophisticated design software with construction equipment to direct the operations of construction machinery with a high level of precision, and improve the speed and accuracy of the construction process. AMG technology has the potential to improve the overall quality, safety, and efficiency of transportation project construction. This research project was undertaken to study AMG implementation barriers and develop strategies for effective implementation of AMG technology in construction operations. Early in the research effort, an expert contact group was established to obtain perspectives from agencies, contractors, designers, and equipment manufacturers. An AMG workshop was conducted to develop a list of capabilities that must exist and obstacles that must be overcome to facilitate seamless electronic data transfer—from the initial surveying, to the development of digital terrain models (DTMs), through design and construction, to final inspection and verification. The synthesis from the workshop helped provide a framework and content for completing the research.     Katharine Kuh and the gallery of art interpretation : a pioneer in the educational exhibits

    Includes bibliographical references.The purpose of this paper is to trace the problems of museum learning and to apply the theory of Katherine Kuh in solving these problems. The history of museum education from 1870-1946 will be briefly illustrated. Then, the work of Katherine Kuh from 1944-1955 will be illustrated, giving her philosophy of museum education and its applications in the Gallery of Art Interpretation at the Art Institute of Chicago. Finally, the problems and the solutions to these problems will be shown, giving their applications to museums of today. The author of this paper believes that Kuh’s work, with adaptations, could be an effective solution to the problems museum education is facing today

    Reduction of renal triglyceride accumulation: effects on proximal tubule Na+/H+ exchange and urinary acidification

    One main pathophysiological mechanism underlying the increased risk for uric acid nephrolithiasis in humans with the metabolic syndrome is the excretion of unduly acidic urine, in part because of reduced excretion of the main urinary buffer, ammonium. The Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rat, an established rodent model of the metabolic syndrome, has similar urinary abnormalities, attributed in part to lower expression and activity of the principal mediator of proximal tubule ammonium excretion, brush-border membrane Na+/H+ exchanger 3 (NHE3). These defects are associated with renal tubular steatosis in ZDF rats, but the causal relationship between renal steatosis and defective urinary acidification has not been investigated in vivo. We hypothesized that reduction of renal steatosis would commensurately normalize urinary acidification parameters. We treated ZDF rats with thiazolidinediones to reduce nonadipose tissue steatosis. Four weeks of treatment reduced renal triglyceride accumulation and restored urinary acidification parameters in ZDF rats to levels comparable to their lean littermates; urinary acidification was not affected by treatment in lean rats. To further document the direct effects of fat, we showed that functional abnormalities induced by fat loading in a cell culture model of proximal tubule steatosis and lipotoxicity can be reversed by fat removal but not by thiazolidinediones alone. Together, these findings support the causative role of renal steatosis in the pathogenesis of urinary acidification defects, demonstrate reversibility upon lipid removal, and highlight a potential therapeutic strategy for renal abnormalities in the metabolic syndrome
