    Sensitivity of Main Polarimetric Parameters of Multifrequency Polarimetric SAR Data to Soil Moisture and Surface Roughness Over Bare Agricultural Soils

    International audienceThe potential of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data for the soil surface characterization of bare agricultural soils was investigated by using air- and spaceborne data acquired by Radar Aéroporté Multi-Spectral d'Etude des Signatures (RAMSES), SystÚme Expérimental de Télédétection Hyperfréquence Imageur (SETHI), and RADARSAT-2 sensors over several study sites in France. Fully polarimetric data at ultrahigh frequency, X-, C-, L-, and P-bands were compared. The results show that the main polarimetric parameters studied (entropy, α angle, and anisotropy) are not very sensitive to the variation of the soil surface parameters. Low correlations are observed between the polarimetric and soil parameters (moisture content and surface roughness). Thus, the polarimetric parameters are not very relevant to the characterization of the soil surface over bare agricultural areas

    Signal level comparison between TerraSAR-X and COSMO-SkyMed SAR Sensors

    International audienceSoil and vegetation biophysical parameter retrieval using synthetic-aperture-radar images requires radiometrically well-calibrated sensors. In this letter, a comparison of signal levels between TerraSAR-X (TSX) and the COSMO-SkyMed (CSK) constellation (CSK1, CSK2, CSK3, and CSK4) was carried out in order to analyze the ability to use jointly all current X-band sensors. The analysis of the X-band signal over forest stands showed a stable signal (variation lower than 1 dB) over time for each of the studied sensors, but a significant difference was observed between the different X-band sensors. Differences between radar signals were higher in HH than in HV polarization. TSX and CSK4 showed similar backscatter signals, with signal level differences of 0.6 dB in HH and 1.4 dB in HV. The CSK3 signal was observed to be lower than those from TSX and CSK4 by about 2.1 dB and 1.5 dB in HH against 3.2 dB and 1.8 dB in HV, respectively. Moreover, CSK2 and CSK1 which showed slightly different backscatter signals (within 1.1 dB in HH and 1.9 dB in HV) had signal levels lower than those obtained from TSX (2.2-3.3 dB in HH and 3.2-5.1 dB in HV for about 29° incidence angle). These results show that it is currently difficult to use jointly the available X-band satellites (CSK and TSX) for estimating the biophysical parameters of soil or vegetation. This is due to the significant difference in the radar signal level between some of the analyzed satellites, which will cause a high overor underestimation of biophysical parameters

    Ibuprofen-loaded calcium phosphate granules : combination of innovative characterization methods to relate mechanical strength to drug location

    This paper studies the impact of the location of a drug substance on the physicochemical and mechanical properties of two types of calcium phosphate granules loaded with seven different contents of ibuprofen, ranging from 1.75% to 46%. These implantable agglomerates were produced by either low or high shear granulation. Unloaded Mi-Pro pellets presented higher sphericity and mechanical properties, but were slightly less porous than Kenwood granules (57.7% vs 61.2%). Nevertheless, the whole expected quantity of ibuprofen could be integrated into both types of granules. A combination of surface analysis, using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupling chemical imaging, and pellet porosity, by mercury intrusion measurements, allowed ibuprofen to be located. It was shown that, from 0% to 22% drug content, ibuprofen deposited simultaneously on the granule surface, as evidenced by the increase in surface NIR signal, and inside the pores, as highlighted by the decrease in pore volume. From 22%, porosity was almost filled, and additional drug substance coated the granule surfaces, leading to a large increase in the surface NIR signal. This coating was more regular for Mi-Pro pellets owing to their higher sphericity and greater surface deposition of drug substance. Unit crush tests using a microindenter revealed that ibuprofen loading enhanced the mechanical strength of granules, especially above 22% drug content, which was favorable to further application of the granules as a bone defect filler

    Polygynous animals are often highly dimorphic, and show large sex-differences in the degree of intra-sexual competition and aggression, which is associated with biased operational sex ratios (OSR). For socially monogamous, sexually monomorphic species, this relationship is less clear. Among mammals, pair-living has sometimes been assumed to imply equal OSR and low frequency, low intensity intra-sexual competition; even when high rates of intra-sexual competition and selection, in both sexes, have been theoretically predicted and described for various taxa. Owl monkeys are one of a few socially monogamous primates. Using long-term demographic and morphological data from 18 groups, we show that male and female owl monkeys experience intense intra-sexual competition and aggression from solitary floaters. Pair-mates are regularly replaced by intruding floaters (27 female and 23 male replacements in 149 group-years), with negative effects on the reproductive success of both partners. Individuals with only one partner during their life produced 25% more offspring per decade of tenure than those with two or more partners. The termination of the pair-bond is initiated by the floater, and sometimes has fatal consequences for the expelled adult. The existence of floaters and the sporadic, but intense aggression between them and residents suggest that it can be misleading to assume an equal OSR in socially monogamous species based solely on group composition. Instead, we suggest that sexual selection models must assume not equal, but flexible, context-specific, OSR in monogamous species.Wenner-Gren Foundation, L.S.B.     BIOSAR 2010 - A SAR campaign in support to the BIOMASS mission

    The ESA funded campaign BioSAR 2010 was carried out at the forestry test site Remningstorp in southern Sweden, in support to the BIOMASS satellite mission under study. Fully polarimetric SAR data were successfully acquired at L- and P-band using ONERA's multi-frequency system SETHI. In addition with other data types gathered, e.g. LiDAR and in-situ measurements, the compiled data set will be used for analyses and comparisons with biomass estimation results obtained at the same test site in the campaign BioSAR 2007, in which DLR's E-SAR made the SAR imaging. Detection of forest changes, robustness of biomass retrieval algorithms and long-term P-band coherence will be in focus as well as cross-validations between the two SAR sensors

    A Machine Checked Model of Idempotent MGU Axioms For Lists of Equational Constraints

    We present formalized proofs verifying that the first-order unification algorithm defined over lists of satisfiable constraints generates a most general unifier (MGU), which also happens to be idempotent. All of our proofs have been formalized in the Coq theorem prover. Our proofs show that finite maps produced by the unification algorithm provide a model of the axioms characterizing idempotent MGUs of lists of constraints. The axioms that serve as the basis for our verification are derived from a standard set by extending them to lists of constraints. For us, constraints are equalities between terms in the language of simple types. Substitutions are formally modeled as finite maps using the Coq library Coq.FSets.FMapInterface.     SETHI / RAMSES-NG: New performances of the flexible multi-spectral airborne remote sensing research platform

    International audienceSETHI is an airborne SAR/GMTI system developed by the French Aerospace Lab. ONERA, and integrating various sensors. In 2016 ONERA invested in upgrade and improvement of all SETHI components. The microwave ones cover from VHF-UHF to X Band, full polarimetric and very high resolution, along track and cross track interferometry and very high precision multi-baseline capacity for interferometry and tomography applications. The optronic sensors offer very high spatial resolution visible images and fine spectral scene analysis in VNIR and SWIR bands. This paper presents the upgrade and new performances of this flexible platform and the qualification campaign results with various sensor configurations

    The camera of the fifth H.E.S.S. telescope. Part I: System description

    In July 2012, as the four ground-based gamma-ray telescopes of the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic System) array reached their tenth year of operation in Khomas Highlands, Namibia, a fifth telescope took its first data as part of the system. This new Cherenkov detector, comprising a 614.5 m^2 reflector with a highly pixelized camera in its focal plane, improves the sensitivity of the current array by a factor two and extends its energy domain down to a few tens of GeV. The present part I of the paper gives a detailed description of the fifth H.E.S.S. telescope's camera, presenting the details of both the hardware and the software, emphasizing the main improvements as compared to previous H.E.S.S. camera technology.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in NIM
