Implicit yield function formulation for granular and rock-like materials

    Get PDF
The constitutive modelling of granular, porous and quasi-brittle materials is based on yield (or damage) functions, which may exhibit features (for instance, lack of convexity, or branches where the values go to infinity, or false elastic domains) preventing the use of efficient return-mapping integration schemes. This problem is solved by proposing a general construction strategy to define an implicitly defined convex yield function starting from any convex yield surface. Based on this implicit definition of the yield function, a return-mapping integration scheme is implemented and tested for elastic-plastic (or -damaging) rate equations. The scheme is general and, although it introduces a numerical cost when compared to situations where the scheme is not needed, is demonstrated to perform correctly and accurately.Comment: 19 page

Maine micro enterprise project : conducted among Maine women micro business owners

    Get PDF
The Maine Micro Enterprise Project sought to identify the contributing components to the successful operation of micro business among Maine women business owners. Part of this population of business owners are involved in the programs sponsored by the Women's Business Development Corporation, a non profit, private economic development corporation. Information that was gathered through interviews, focus groups and surveys was intended to inform and shape the products and services WBDC offers to women micro business owners. The project results would also help determine the potential demand for services and the future needs of this group. Although the research made many of the demands of the micro-entrepreneurs clear and some applications readily apparent, it is still not evident if the products and services developed from this information would stimulate and nurture micro-business success. Some services derived from this project are already being tested. Further study over the period of several years would be necessary to understand the effect on micro enterprise of various components of the micro development plan suggested by this study. Accordingly a better definition of "business success" as encountered in this project could, constitute another study for the future. (Author abstract)Denzer, M. (1997). FEDARCINE -- Cooperation of International Archaeology Film Festivals

The Effects of Base Sheet Properties on Blade Forces in Beveled Blade Coating

    Get PDF
When coating on a beveled blade coater, the coat weight applied to the base paper is influenced by the doctoring action of the blade. The final coat weight varies as a function of the blade deflection. The blade deflection can be determined by the balance of forces, external and dynamic. The external is the mechanical force applied to the blade, this is also known as the blade loading. The dynamic forces derive from the pressure forces (speed induced), the impulse force (momentum dependent) and finally the hydrodynamic forces. How the roughness of the base sheet affects the blade forces is unknown. By measuring the blade deflection while coating on films with varying roughness, the interaction can be studied under dynamic conditions. Three different films with varying roughness, will be tested under three different blade loading. Experimental measurements of blade deflection will be carried out on a Cylindrical Laboratory Coater, using a position detector mounted on the blade. There are few conclusions that can be made about the relationship between base sheet roughness and blade deflection. There does not seem to be a correlation between the roughness of the sheet and the deflection of the blade. The reasons for this inconclusive results may be due to the lack inadequate sampling of the amplifier. Because of the problems with the amplifier, the speed of the CLC has to be lowered form 2000 ft/min to 400 ft/min. This lowered speed and lack of needed sensitivity of the amplifier may have introduced error into the results

The effect of anaerobic exercise on the thermic effect of food

The thermic effect of food (TEF) is the increment in energy expenditure above resting metabolic rate associated with the cost of absorption, metabolism, and storage of food. Previous studies have shown that TEF is enhanced by aerobic exercise. The purpose of this study was to determine if a similar effect occurs with anaerobic exercise (weight lifting). VO2 was measured after ingestion of a 660 kcal meal with and without prior completion of a weight-training regimen. TEF was 42% higher after the exercise trial (t = 2.539, p \u3c .017), compared with the control trial. These results indicate that prior anaerobic exercise also leads to an enhanced TEF
