The influence of measurement density on micro-instability testing

Get PDF
Protection from water flooding by dikes is an important issue in the Netherlands. Therefore dikes have to be regularly tested for possible failure, for example caused by micro-instability. Micro-instability occurs in the upper layer of the dike, due to water flowing through it. The goal of this research was to determine the influence of the measurement density on safety assessment of river dikes for micro-instability and in addition to give a confidence interval for these assessments. This paper shows that uncertainty in cover layer thickness has the largest effect on the reliability of dike safety assessment in relation to micro-instability

“On the ruins of seriality”:The scientific journal and the nature of the scientific life

Twenty-first-century discourse on science has been marked by narratives of crisis. Science is said to be experiencing crises of public trust, of peer review and publishing, of reproducibility and replicability, and of recognition and reward. The dominant response has been to “repair” the scientific literature and the system of scientific publishing through open science. This paper places the current predicament of scholarly communication in historical perspective by exploring the evolution of the scientific journal in the second half of the twentieth century. I focus on a new genre of scientific journal invented by Dutch commercial publishers shortly after World War II, and on its effects on the nature of the scientific life. I show that profit-oriented publishers and discipline-building scientists worked together to make postwar science more open, while also arguing that formats of scientific publication have their own agency.</p

Greenwashing in carbon accounting from electricity

The necessary actions to fight climate change is becoming more and more urgent year by year. To reach the ambitions set in the Paris Agreement, all stones must be turned. The GHG Protocol is the most recognized framework for businesses to account for their emissions use a methodology for calculating emissions from electricity that are questioned by some scholars. The “market-based methods” and the dual reporting from the GHG Protocol give room for companies to use fossil fuels, and still report lower emissions than what they can with electricity. Purchases of contractual emission factors like a Guarantee of Origin even further contribute to the possibility of companies greenwashing their business. In this study the framework is examined through a literature review and case research from the Norwegian company Skretting. The results clearly point towards the need for a new methodology and suggest that more companies that consume high levels of energy are implemented in the EU Emission Trading System. The necessary actions to fight climate change is becoming more and more urgent year by year. The electro-optical characterization of gallium arsenide p/n solar cells is discussed. The objective is to identify and understand basic mechanisms which limit the performance of high efficiency gallium arsenide solar cells. The approach involves conducting photoresponse and temperature dependent current-voltage measurements, and interpretation of the data in terms of theory to determine key device parameters. Depth concentration profiles are also utilized in formulating a model to explain device performance

AbstractThis research is a development research that refers to a 4D (four-D) development model that has been modified into 3D which includes three stages, namely: the definition stage, the design stage and the develop stage. The instrument used in this research is a questionnaire. The results of LKPD development are known that: (1) Based on the results of descriptive data analysis explaining that teachers and students need the development of LKPD containing the "IDEAL" strategy in Linear Program material (2) The level of LKPD validity based on the results of material and media expert validation is (96.88 %) is in the very valid category and (3) the level of practicality of the LKPD based on the results of teacher assessments and student responses (92.02%) is included in the very practical category. Keywords: LKPD, Mathematical Problem Solving Ability, “IDEAL” strategy, Program Linea

Therapeutic effects of ulinastatin on postoperative complications and cognitive function in elderly patients with esophageal cancer after thoracic laparoscopic surgery

Purpose: To investigate the therapeutic effect of ulinastatin on postoperative complications and cognitive function in elderly patients with esophageal cancer after thoracic laparoscopic surgery. Methods: A total of 100 elderly in-patients with esophageal cancer who had undergone thoracic laparoscopic surgery from April 2019 to December 2020 were selected and randomly assigned to control and study groups. Patients in control group received conventional treatment, while those in the study group were administered ulinastatin. The two groups were compared with respect to response, incidence of postoperative complications, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) cognitive function score, Barthel Index (BI) scores; preoperative, intraoperative, 12-h and 24-h post-surgery levels of IL-1β and IL-6; levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+, as well as duration of surgery and waking time. Results: Response, MMSE score, BI index, and levels of CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+ in the study group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p < 0.05). Incidence of postoperative complications, and expression levels of IL-1β and IL-6 12 h and 24 h after surgery in the study group were lower than the corresponding control levels (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in duration of operation and waking time between the two groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Ulinastatin significantly reduces postoperative complications, and also improves cognitive function in elderly patients with esophageal cancer after thoracic laparoscopic surgery. This finding is of great significance in the treatment of these patients
