An off-shell formulation for internally gauged D=5, N=2 supergravity from superconformal methods

We use the superconformal method to construct a new formulation for pure off-shell D=5, N=2 Poincar\'e supergravity and present its internal gauging. The main difference between the traditional formulation and our new formulation is the choice of the Dilaton Weyl Multiplet as the background Weyl Multiplet and the choice of a Linear compensating Multiplet. We do not introduce an external vector multiplet to gauge the theory, but instead use the internal vector of the Dilaton Weyl Multiplet. We show that the corresponding on-shell theory is Einstein-Maxwell supergravity. We believe that this gauging method can be applied in more complicated scenarios such as the inclusion of off-shell higher derivative invariants.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figure, v3: Version appeared in JHE

Van kapittelkerk tot priorijkerk: De romaanse Sint-Hilariuskerk van Bierbeek in nieuw perspectief naar aanleiding van de dendrochronologische datering van de sporenkap (prov. Vlaams-Brabant)

In de architectuurgeschiedenis vormen het einde van de 12de eeuw en de eerste helft van de 13de eeuw een bijzonder boeiende periode. Het onderzoek van de laatste decennia heeft aangetoond dat de zogenaamde transitie van de romaanse architectuur naar de gotiek allesbehalve een lineaire stijlevolutie is. Dankzij de dendrochronologische datering van bewaarde kapconstructies hebben veel middeleeuwse gebouwen waarvoor geen of weinig archieven bewaard zijn een nieuwe plaats gekregen op de tijdslijn en een nieuwe betekenis in functie van een duidelijk geïdentificeerde historische context. In dat opzicht moet er in Vlaanderen nog veel gebeuren. De synchronisatie van de bouw van het schip van Bierbeek en de talrijke oorkonden uit de jaren 1234-1235 was enkel mogelijk dankzij de dendrochronologische datering van de kapconstructie. De materiële bron kon dus gerelateerd worden aan de geschreven bronnen, binnen een precieze chronologische context, en zo de cultuurhistorische betekenis van de kerk van Bierbeek in een nieuw perspectief plaatsen. Voortaan is de kerk van Bierbeek veel meer dan een fraai voorbeeld van romaanse architectuur in Brabant uit de tweede helft van de 12de eeuw, zoals kanunnik Lemaire had geschreven en Pierre Langerock door zijn historiserende restauratie had bevestigd. De kerk van Bierbeek, waarvan het schip voltooid werd in 1234, blijkt de laatste poging van de heren Walter I en Diederik van Bierbeek te zijn geweest om de identiteit van hun geslacht in hun leen te verwezenlijken, en dit aan de hand van een klein seculier kapittel en een waarschijnlijk als grafkerk bestemd gebouw. Na een halve eeuw weerstand moest Diederik zich uiteindelijk overgeven aan het recht van de machtigste, met name dat van hertog Hendrik I, gesteund door de bisschop van Luik en paus Gregorius IX

Symplectic gaugings and the field-antifield formalism

We give an example of how conventional gauging methods obstruct a systematic analysis of gauged supergravities. We discuss how the embedding tensor formalism deals with these problems and argue that the gauge algebra related to the embedding tensor formalism is soft, open and reducible. De oudste dakconstructie in de Leuvense binnenstad: bouwhistorisch onderzoek in de predikherenkerk (prov. Vlaams-Brabant)

Eén van de merkwaardigste kenmerken van de Leuvense predikherenkerk is het contrast tussen de homogene binnenruimte en de tweedelige uiterlijke vorm. Om dit contrast te verklaren is een bezoek aan de bovenverdieping van de kerk noodzakelijk. De kapconstructie die boven de gewelven staat en de dakvlakken draagt, heeft heel wat te vertellen over de bouwfasen van de kerk en de wijzigingen die ze in de loop der tijd onderging. Bouwhistorisch onderzoek leidde tot de vaststelling van drie fasen die konden gedateerd worden dankzij dendrochronologie. Zo is men te weten gekomen dat de fraaie gotische sporenkappen van het koor en het dormitorium opgetrokken werden met hout van in de jaren 1251-1265 gevelde bomen en aldus, voor zover bekend, de oudst bewaarde dakkappen in de Leuvense binnenstad zijn. Deze data stemmen perfect overeen met de historische data en de dood van de Brabantse hertog Hendrik III die in 1261 in de kerk in opbouw begraven werd

A virtual reality user interface for a design information system

The computer is a tool, a complex artefact that is used to extend our reach. A computer system can provide several kinds of services, but against these services stands a supplementary task that the user must deal with: the communication with the computer system. We argued that Virtual Reality (VR) can fundamentally improve the user interface by rendering on the common experiential skills of all users. We present the theoretical basis for this, referring to Donald Norman?s theory. We show that VR provides at least theoretically, the means to take a big step in the direction of an ideal user interface. As an example of a innovative application of VR in user interface design, we presented the VR-DIS system; an interdisciplinary design system for the building and construction industry. We discuss the issues underlying the design of its VR interface

Justiciability of the Right to Education

Already in the nineteenth century, European countries began to lay down the provision of compulsory primary education in domestic law. After the Second World War, the right to education became part of international human rights law. It was included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the First Optional Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and in a number of other international instruments. Today, many countries have incorporated the right to education in their constitutions. The present article discusses the modalities of how a number of key dimensions of the right to education have been subject to judicial or quasi-judicial review. In other words, it discusses how the courts have dealt with the educational issues brought before them. Such cases do not always use right-to-education language, but generally speaking they deal with two aspects of the right to education, namely the right to receive an education and the right to choose an education. One of the major arguments against economic, social and cultural rights being on an equal footing with civil and political rights has always been that the former are not justiciable. The present article will reveal that the right to education is and has been fully justiciable in many jurisdiction
