    On the Extraction of the Neutron Spin Structure Functions and the Gerasimov -- Drell -- Hearn Integral from 3He(e,e)X^3\vec {He}(\vec e, e')X data

    Nuclear effects in polarized inelastic electron scattering off polarized 3He^3He are discussed; in the kinematics of future experiments at CEBAF, Fermi motion effects are found to be much larger than in deep inelastic scattering. It is shown that improperly describing nuclear dynamics would lead to the extraction of unreliable neutron spin structure functions. On the other hand side, a simple and workable equation relating the Gerasimov -- Drell -- Hearn Integral for the neutron to the corresponding quantity for 3He^3He is proposed.Comment: 13 pages Latex including 3 postscript figure

    Time Evolution of Hadronization and Grey Tracks in DIS off Nuclei

    The analysis of the grey tracks produced in Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) off nuclei provides important information on the space-time development of hadronization in nuclear medium. This method is complementary to the measurement of nuclear attenuation of leading inclusive hadrons. While the latter is focused on the hadronization dynamics for the quite rare process of leading hadrons production, the former covers the main bulk of inelastic events, and its Q^2 dependence is a very sensitive tool to discriminate between different models of hadronization. Employing the model of perturbative hadronization developed earlier, we calculate the Q^2 and x_{Bj} dependences of the number of collisions and relate it to the mean number of grey tracks, using an empirical relation obtained from the analysis of data from the Fermilab E665 experiment on DIS of muons off the Xe nucleus. We found the number of grey tracks to rise steeply with Q^2 in good agreement with the experimental data.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure

    A New Approach to y-scaling and the Universal Features of Scaling Functions and Nucleon Momentum Distributions

    Some systematic general features of y-scaling structure functions, which are essentially independent of detailed dynamics, are pointed out. Their physical interpretation in terms of general characteristics, such as a mean field description and nucleon-nucleon correlations, is given and their relationship to the momentum distributions illustrated. A new relativistic scaling variable is proposed which incorporates the momentum dependence of the excitation energy of the (A-1) system, with the resulting scaling function being closely related to the longitudinal momemtum distributions and being free from removal-energy scaling violating effects.Comment: 17 pages, RevTeX, 4 ps Figures, to appear in Physics Letters
