Challenges Facing the Reunification of Korea

    Get PDF
After the Second World War, the once-unified northern and southern halves of the nation of Korea had been under immense external pressure from the American-Soviet Cold War. As a result, the northern side had sided with the Russian communists, while the southern side had leaned into the United States’ style of democracy over time. Despite multiple proposed ideas for unification, the increasing tensions between Russia and the United States discouraged reunification, despite the Cold War’s eventual end. Thus, various social, religious, economic, and military crises multiplied within each country’s borders. This paper will assess the challenges surrounding the reunification of North and South Korea and argue the following hypothesis: that with intentional diplomatic meetings and further assimilation of cultures, the two nations can reunite

Taking the Victim Out of Sexual Assault: The Effect of Self-Compassion on Sexual Assault Survivors

    Get PDF
Self-compassion is defined as the ability to treat oneself kindly following perceived failures and/or painful events; this construct is characterized by three components: self-kindness, common humanity and mindfulness (Neff, 2003). Although some people may naturally be more self-compassionate than others, previous self-compassion manipulations have shown that self-compassion is a mindset that can be taught. Several short-term self-compassion inductions have been published (Adams & Leary, 2007; Breines & Chen, 2012; Leary, Tate, Adams, Allen, & Hancock, 2007) showing that such inductions lead to more positive emotional and behavioral outcomes. The purpose of this research study was to determine whether a short self-compassion induction would impact people’s responses to an imagined sexual assault scenario. Female undergraduates (N = 141) were randomly assigned to a self-compassion condition or a control. All participants imagined a vivid sexual assault scenario and rated how they anticipated they would feel following the scenario (i., e emotion, less identity, fault, state self-compassion, formal and informal disclosure, and future behavioral intentions). Women who received the self-compassion induction experienced less negative effects following the scenario than participants in the control condition. Some of these effects (e.g., negative emotion, negative identity, formal and informal disclosure) were moderated by past sexual assault experiences showing that the self-compassion induction was more effective for women with no previous sexual assault experience. Comparing groups based on sexual assault history revealed the benefits of a short self-compassion induction may be limited to those with no previous experience. If applied to domestic violence programs, we recommend using a longer self-compassion intervention

The Polarization of Political Parties and the American Republic

In the modern age of the 24-hour news cycle and social media, misinformation is rampant, and tensions are high. With a constant barrage of information coming from either direction, political opinions grow in number, and often in opposition to one another. This widens the fissure between the two major political parties in America, the conservative Republican, and liberal Democratic parties. Based on a study of 11 countries, including the United States, political polarization threatens democracies by creating political “tribes” that subscribe to groupthink, a harmful ideology that uplifts one school of thought while condemning others. In addition to having violent effects on the citizens, the polarization of political parties in the United States has led to more frequent and prolonged national and local government shutdowns, including the longest government shutdown in American history in 2019. Without agreement on key legislation and courses of action on issues, governments cannot efficiently serve the public. Recognizing the impacts of political polarization in the United States is the only way to begin formulating solutions to the material issues that Americans face today

Conclusion : Ce travail contribue à l’avancement des connaissances infirmières. Background: Individual, organizational and systemic factors contribute to the high level of newly licensed nursing turnover. Among those factors, there is night and evening shifts that many new nurses are forced into. Unfortunately, nurses often live a harsh transition period from student to health professional. New nurses’ vulnerability requires support in their integration in the nursing profession. The purpose of this work is to elaborate effective strategies to support new nurses working nights and evenings in hospitals. Method: The integrative literature review based on the Galvan (2006) method was conducted with the databases of CINAHL, Pubmed, Web of Science and MEDLINE. The framework used is perceived supervisor support by Eisenberger et al. (2002). Results: The literature review indicates many recommendations in practice, education, management and research. Conclusion: This work contributes to nursing knowledge advancement. It presents recommendations for all levels of management, nurses working day shifts and experienced nurses. It also demonstrates the lack of literature about that phenomenon and gives insights for future research. Keywords: novice nurse, transition, charge nurse, head nurse, supervisor support, evening shift work, night shift work

Effect of Vitamins C and E on Endothelial Function in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Background/Objectives. Endothelial dysfunction due to hyperglycemia-induced oxidative damage is an important predictor of future cardiovascular risk in patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and is present in adolescent T1DM. We hypothesized that combined treatment with the antioxidant vitamins C and E might improve endothelial function (EF) and other biochemical risk factors in adolescents with T1DM. Subjects/Methods. Open-label antioxidant supplementation was given for six weeks with endpoint measurements collected at baseline and study completion. Endpoints measured included EF and plasma measurements of biochemical endothelial risk. Results. Two males and 7 females were studied. Mean age was 12.9 ± 0.9 yrs; mean T1DM duration was 5.5 ± 2.5 yrs; mean BMI was 22.1 ± 3.8 kg/m2; and mean hemoglobin A1c was 9.3 ± 1.1%. No differences were found for EF, high sensitivity CRP, total antioxidant capacity, adiponectin, or endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) between before and after combined vitamin C and E therapy. Conclusions. Our negative study results do not support previous findings of decreased oxidative damage, improved endothelial function, and increased vascular repair capacity with antioxidant therapy. Longer term studies may be needed to determine the effects, if any, of combined antioxidant therapy on EPCs, EF, and markers of micro- and macrovascular complications in T1DM

Dynamic three-dimensional echocardiography combined with semi-automated border detection offers advantages for assessment of resynchronization therapy

Simultaneous electrical stimulation of both ventricles in patients with interventricular conduction disturbance and advanced heart failure improves hemodynamics and results in increased exercise tolerance, quality of life. We have developed a novel technique for the assessment and optimization of resynchronization therapy. Our approach is based on transthoracic dynamic three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography and allows determination of the most delayed contraction site of the left ventricle (LV) together with global LV function data. Our initial results suggest that fast reconstruction of the LV is feasible for the selection of the optimal pacing site and allows identifying LV segments with dyssynchrony

ULTRAVIOLET LINEAR DICHROISM STUDIES OF INDENE

Abstract Ultraviolet Linear Dichroism (LD) spectra of the indene molecule in stretched polyethylene (PE) film are reported. Differently polarized electronic transitions are resolved in the LD spectrum. The first electronic transition at λ max = 285 nm, which is hidden by the second one in solution, is clearly isolated in LD spectra and polarized along the long axis of the molecule. The second one which is located at about λ max = 250 nm is polarized along the short axis. The calculated spectrum of indene shows the same trends in complete agreement with experimental findings
