A spark gap is connected between the input conductor and ground for conducting the overvoltage current to ground and for blowing the fuse to open the circuit to the electrical equipment. A pulse attenuator network is provided between the spark gap and the electrical equipment to be protected for attenuating the pulse of energy passing through the fuse and spark gap prior to blowing of the fuse.     Importance of DTM accuracy, precision and acquisition technique for estimating contributing areas of post-fire erosion at the slope and catchment scale

    Wildfires are a frequent phenomenon in Portugal, affecting over 300.000 ha in dry years like 2003 and 2005. Directly and/or indirectly, wildfires can strongly enhance the hydrological response and associated sediment losses and, thereby, negatively affect land-use sustainability as well as ecosystem functioning of downstream aquatic habitats. Therefore, the EROSFIRE projects aim at developing a GIS-tool for predicting soil erosion hazard following wildfire and post-fire land management practices. Assessment and modeling of runoff and soil erosion rates critically depends on accurate estimates of the contributing areas. In the case of catchments as well as unbounded erosion plots (arguably, the only practical solution for slope-scale measurements), delineation of contributing area requires a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) with an adequate resolution and accuracy. The DTM that was available for the Colmeal study area (Goís municipality, central Portugal) was that of the 1:25.000 topographic map produced by the Military Geographic Institute. Since this study area involves a rather small experimental catchment of roughly 10 ha and relatively short study slopes of less than 100 m long, two different data acquisition techniques were used to produce high-resolution and high-accuracy DTM. One is aerial photogrammetry, whilst the other is terrestrial laser scanning. To produce a DTM by photogrammetric means, a dedicated digital aerial photography mission was carried out. The images had a pixel size of 10 cm. Manual measurements permitted to measure breaklines and were complemented by automatic measurements. In this way, a DTM in a TIN format was produced. This was further converted to grid format using the ArcGIS software system. Signalized control points allowed obtaining the DTM in the same global reference system as that employed for terrestrial laser scanning. The terrestrial laser scanning was done using a Riegl LMS Z360I, stationed in 8 points within the area to provide a complete coverage. The resulting dense cloud of points was filtered – by the company carrying out the scanning mission - to remove the non-terrain points (in particular vegetation). Several grids of different sizes were produced (0.10 x 0.10, 0.20 x 0.20, 0.50 x 0.50, 1 x 1 and 2 x 2 m2). The proposed work will compare and analyze estimates of contribution areas that were obtained with the two above-mentioned data acquisition techniques and for different spatial resolutions. This will be done for selected slope-scale sediment fences as well as for the outlet of the experimental catchment. In addition, different algorithms available in ArcGIS for TIN-to-grid conversion will be compared, since preliminary results have suggested that these procedures produce markedly different results

Assessment of runoff and soil erosion rates critically depends on accurate estimates of the corresponding runoff areas. In the case of catchments as well as unbounded erosion plots (arguably, the only practical solution for slope-scale measurements), delineation of runoff area requires a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) with an adequate resolution and accuracy. The DTM that was available for the Colmeal study area, localized in the mountain range of Lousã, in the central part of Portugal, of EROSFIRE-II project is that of the 1:25.000 topographic map produced by the Military Geographic Institute. Since the Colmeal area involves a rather small experimental catchment of roughly 10 ha and relatively short study slopes of less than 100 m long, two different data acquisition techniques were used to produce high-resolution and high-accuracy DTM. The study is being carried out in ArcGIS using DTM in a grid format. Preliminary results suggest that the conver- sion of TIN-to-grid in ArcGIS produces results that depend on the procedure being applied. Therefore, the different algorithms available at ArcGIS for TIN-to-grid conversion are currently being tested, using an artificially produced DTM. This testing includes various interpolation techniques for grid generation, and will be extended to different algorithms for computation of drainage flow direction

    Listen to the market: Do its complexity and signals make companies more innovative

    This paper analyzes four modes of innovation that differ in their scope of newness – innovation generation and adoption–, and in their degree of change –radical and incremental innovations. Building a theoretical model based on the Market Orientation (MO) and contingency theory literatures and utilizing a unique sample of innovating firms, we find that MO positively influence the number incremental generation and adoption of innovations. We also find that environmental complexity moderates the relationship between MO and radical and incremental innovation generation and adoption. That is, we have found that high environmental complexity enhances the introduction of radical and incremental internally generated innovations and harms the introduction of incremental innovation adoptions for market oriented firm. These findings add to the innovation and MO literatures. Our results also have important implications for both commercial activities and R&D policies adopted by firms.taking place in this sector enhances its potential as a showcase for processes of anticipation and adaptation to the environment. In addition, the paper aims to shed some light on the question of whether strategy potentially moderates the MO-performance link.     The background material and operational concepts of a computer-based system for an operating wind tunnel are described. An on-line real-time computer system was installed in a wind tunnel facility to gather static and dynamic data. The computer system monitored aerodynamic forces and moments of periodic and quasi-periodic functions, and displayed and plotted computed results in real time. The total system is comprised of several off-the-shelf, interconnected subsystems that are linked to a large data processing center. The system includes a central processor unit with 32,000 24-bit words of core memory, a number of standard peripherals, and several special processors; namely, a dynamic analysis subsystem, a 256-channel PCM-data subsystem and ground station, a 60-channel high-speed data acquisition subsystem, a communication link, and static force and pressure subsystems. Es descriu la morfologia de diverses espècies del gènere Vaucheria, entre les quals destaca la presència de Vaucheria woroniniana, nova citació per a la flora algològica espanyola.A new contribution on the knowledge of the spanish freshwater algae is given. The main morphological features about several Vaucheria species are presented; among them, Vaucheria woroniniana is a new record for the spanish algological flora

    Results of a study on the epiphytic algae in alkaline pre-Pyrenean lakes is presented. The algal flora is very diverse, a total of 284 taxa were identifyed. The diatoms are the most important group, following it in abundance green and blue-green algae. The epiphytic assemblages are dominated by Cladophora fracta especially in spring, where it growths profusely on Phragmites australis stems. The diatoms are mostly epipelic, but there are some exclusively epiphytic, as Achnanthes minutissima, Amphora veneta, Cocconeis pediculus, Epithemia sorex, E. turgida and Gomphonema sp. pl. The diatom assemblages are very close to the Cymbelleto-Mastogloion, as well as to the Cymatopleurion.Es presenten els resultats d'un estudi sobre les algues epifítiques en llacs de tipus carstic dels pre-pirineus. En aquests medis s'observa una rica flora epifítica (284 taxons), es destaca el grup de les diatomees, seguit a distancia notable per les clorofícies i les cianofícies. En general, I'alga dominant és Cladophora fracta, especialment a la primavera, sobre les tiges de Phragmites australis. Les diatomees són principalment epipkliques, encara que també n'hi ha d'epifítiques com ara Achnanthes minutissima, Amphora veneta, Cocconeis pediculus, Epithemia sorex, E. turgida i Gomphonema sp. pl. En conjunt, les poblacions de diatomees presenten una gran afinitat florística amb el Cymbelleto-Mastogloion, com també amb el Cymatopleurion
