    Get PDF
Psychology was internationally developed as a scientific discipline. However, there continues to be a bias towards thepublication of research with Western English?speaking samples. In consequence, it is important to understand what chal-lenges non-English speaking countries are facing in their ability to contribute their research. Considering this, the goal ofthis article is to present an overview of the factors that may affect the development of scientific psychology in Argentina, including the professional practice of psychology, the teaching of psychology in higher education, and obstacles facedby graduate students who pursue research careers. Reviewing these topics will allow us to present the current state ofpsychological science in Argentina, and to propose future directions for scientific development.Fil: Giovannetti, Federico. Construction of coherence in the comprehension of narratives: Studies on the importance of the establishment of causal connections, gaps in current research and future directions

    Get PDF
The establishing of causal connections is key to the construction of discourse coherence. The aim of this narrative review is to present research that has examined the establishment of these connections in the construction of narrative discourse coherence, in order to highlight gaps in current research and suggest future directions. Among these gaps, we will highlight that prior research has not tended to examine the role of the modality of presentation of the materials, or to present spontaneous discourse, or materials about current social problems. In order to review these topics, we introduce the causal chain model, causal network model, causal inference maker model, landscape model, and contributions from constructionist theory and the event-indexing model. We also present studies that support their claims. Finally, we present conclusions and discuss future directions. The presentation of these studies will allow us to underscore the crucial need for research to examine the comprehension of discourse that students process in academic settings, everyday interactions, and that focuses on relevant current social issues

Enhancement of the broadband modulation diffraction efficiency of liquid-crystal displays

    Get PDF
We report a method to maximize the broadband modulation diffraction efficiency of liquid-crystal spatial light modulators for polychromatic applications requiring a wide range of wavelengths. An optimized encoding pattern based on the minimum Euclidean projection principle is applied in order to increase the diffraction efficiency at large wavelengths that exhibit phase modulation depth lower than 2p. We demonstrate modulation efficiencies over 80% on a wavelength range from 454 to 633 nm, which can reach up to 98% when the range is reduced to 60 nm. Experimental results are shown to confirm the calculations

Summary Introduction and aim:  Dopamine agonists have been reported to increase the risk of cardiac valve regurgitation in patients with Parkinson's disease. However, it is unknown whether these drugs might be harmful for patients with hyperprolactinaemia (HyperPRL). The aim of the study was to evaluate whether HyperPRL patients treated with dopamine agonists had a higher prevalence of cardiac valves regurgitation than that of general population. Methods and patients:  One hundred consecutive patients (79 women, 21 men, mean age 41 ± 13 years) with HyperPRL during treatment with cabergoline were enrolled in an observational case–control study and compared with 100 matched normal subjects (controls). Valve regurgitation was assessed by echocardiography according to the American Society of Echocardiography recommendations. Results:  Seven HyperPRL patients (7%) and six controls (6%) had moderate (grade 3) regurgitation in any valve (p = 0.980). All were asymptomatic and had no signs of cardiac disease. Mean duration of cabergoline treatment was 67 ± 39 months (range: 3–199 months). Mean cumulative dose of cabergoline was 279 ± 301 mg (range: 15–1327 mg). Moderate valve regurgitation was not associated with the duration of treatment (p = 0.359), with cumulative dose of cabergoline (p = 0.173), with age (p = 0.281), with previous treatment with bromocriptine (p = 0.673) or previous adenomectomy (p = 0.497) in patients with HyperPRL. Discussion:  In conclusion, treatment with cabergoline was not associated with increased prevalence of cardiac valves regurgitation in patients with HyperPRL. Mean cumulative dose of cabergoline was lower in patients with HyperPRL than that reported to be deleterious for patients with Parkinson's disease: hence, longer follow-up is necessary, particularly in patients receiving weekly doses > 3 mg

OBJECTIVE: To recognize the significance of fetal loss for women who have experienced it, starting from an understanding of the pregnancy process, based on their reports. METHODS: This was a qualitative analysis study based on the histories of seven women who experienced fetal loss in the town of Arujá, State of São Paulo, between July 1998 and June 1999. The women were identified from the death certificates of stillborn infants born within the study period, which were obtained from the Civil Registry Office of Arujá. The methodological procedures involved the utilization of the techniques of oral history-taking to gather data and content analysis to evaluate the material collected. The interviews were recorded, fully transcribed and subsequently prepared for analysis. RESULTS: The findings were analyzed as two points: the circumstantial context of the pregnancy and the impact after the loss, with the adoption of specific thematic categories. The first of these encompassed the woman's perception of the pregnancy, her awareness of the coming of the new baby, health problems up to the time of the loss, and the health service attendance. The significance of the loss for the women in this study was made evident along three central lines: the loss of a part of herself, attribution of the fatality to divine intervention and changes in attitude towards life. The social support network for these women was built on two pillars: family and church. Support from the health services was practically nonexistent. Finally, they all expressed their will to live and the need to work, study and even have another pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: There needs to be a change in general concepts in the mission to attend to such women. The attendance provided by the healthcare services needs to be humanized. The need for multiprofessional follow-up of healthcare service users who suffered fetal loss was very evident. The importance of a support network for women who have gone through this problem was also shown.OBJETIVO: (Re)conhecer o significado da perda fetal para mulheres que vivenciaram a experiência, a partir da compreensão do processo de gravidez, com base em seus relatos.

Occupational exposure to pesticides and health symptoms among family farmers in Brazil

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of occupational pesticide exposure with acute and mental health symptoms. METHODS: Cross-sectional survey carried out with 78 Brazilian family farmers, who were pesticide applicators and helpers conveniently selected. Symptoms and exposure data were collected by interviews, and mental health outcomes by the Self-Reporting Questionnaire. Blood samples were analyzed to assess cholinesterase levels. Exposure indicators and symptoms were compared between applicators and helpers, and Poisson regression was performed to estimate prevalence ratios. RESULTS: Farmers reported exposure to multiple pesticides from early ages; they worked without safety training, technical support, and full protective equipment, and they had a high prevalence of acute and mental health symptoms (e.g., headache, mucosal irritation, tachycardia, and depressive signs). Applicators had more cholinesterase changes than helpers, but less symptoms. Helpers used less personal protection and had significantly higher prevalence ratio of headache, dyspnea, wheezing, cough, poor digestion, tiredness, and feeling worthless, after adjustment. CONCLUSIONS: Acute and mental health symptoms were observed, both among farmers and helpers. Thus, surveillance actions must be reinforced in Brazil, technical support and safety training improved, focused on applicators and helpers, who are occupationally and environmentally exposed to pesticides. Agricultural practices of these groups with less pesticide use should receive incentive

Three diets for A. darlingi larvae were tested in order to arrive at the following parameters indicative of development in this phase: length of time, both for overall as for each stage of evolution and daily and total stage-survival. A methodology which combined two vital statistical methods of analysis, adjusted to the study of populations under laboratory conditions, was used for determining these parameters. The length of time for overall and for each stage of, evolution were graphically assessed on the basis of trend curves of colony median stages, in sequential surveys. Values for the total and the daily stage-survival were stimated from survival tables. Results permitted the selection of the most adequate diet for the larval development as that composed of one part of fish flour to two parts of bread flour and two parts of a heat germ, giving an average length of 12.9 days between the first larval stage and the emergent adult.
