The finding of a magnetic anomaly in coastal Maine
The area of central coastal Maine is rich in sulfide and other valuable minerals. In the Blue Hill and Castine Quadrangles specifically, sulfide minerals occur in relatively small localized concentrations, a fact which has been known for almost 250 years. This paper concerns several local concentrations, their associated rock types, and the methods of a surface magnetic survey

Blurred relationships: The factual fiction of John Edgar Wideman
Control is a central issue in any text: does the author\u27s intention or the reader\u27s interpretation better explain the resulting meaning of the text? This question has long been the subject of debate among textual theorists; this essay proposes a middle ground, namely that the author and the reader engage in a collaborative effort to make meaning in a text
Cross-Recurrence Quantification Analysis of Categorical and Continuous Time Series: an R package
This paper describes the R package crqa to perform cross-recurrence
quantification analysis of two time series of either a categorical or
continuous nature. Streams of behavioral information, from eye movements to
linguistic elements, unfold over time. When two people interact, such as in
conversation, they often adapt to each other, leading these behavioral levels
to exhibit recurrent states. In dialogue, for example, interlocutors adapt to
each other by exchanging interactive cues: smiles, nods, gestures, choice of
words, and so on. In order for us to capture closely the goings-on of dynamic
interaction, and uncover the extent of coupling between two individuals, we
need to quantify how much recurrence is taking place at these levels. Methods
available in crqa would allow researchers in cognitive science to pose such
questions as how much are two people recurrent at some level of analysis, what
is the characteristic lag time for one person to maximally match another, or
whether one person is leading another. First, we set the theoretical ground to
understand the difference between 'correlation' and 'co-visitation' when
comparing two time series, using an aggregative or cross-recurrence approach.
Then, we describe more formally the principles of cross-recurrence, and show
with the current package how to carry out analyses applying them. We end the
paper by comparing computational efficiency, and results' consistency, of crqa
R package, with the benchmark MATLAB toolbox crptoolbox. We show perfect
comparability between the two libraries on both levels
The Role of Neuropsychiatrists in Medical Science
The re-emergence of neuropsychiatry in the twentieth century occurred in the context of a history of neuropsychiatric contributions to medical science. In parallel to the growth of neuropsychiatry as a medical specialty, psychiatry has benefitted from developments in neuroscience, many of these built upon foundations established by neuropsychiatrists. We sought to enumerate the contributions by psychiatrists with neurological training to advances in medical science
I like who you like, but only if I like you: Female character affects mate-choice copying.
Mate-choice copying is shown when women imitate the mate-choice preferences of other women. We propose that the preferences of women with a pleasant character should be more influential than those of women with an unpleasant character and further suggest that this should apply only when the female demonstrates active interest in the male, rather than disinterest. Here, we presented women as having either a pleasant or unpleasant character and found that observing pleasant women looking at men increased women’s preferences for those men, while observing unpleasant women looking at men had no effect on women’s preferences. Furthermore, the effect of being looked at by a pleasant woman was heightened when she was smiling. This suggests that judgements of facial attractiveness can be socially influenced and that character affects the degree of influence
Confirmation of a Four-Factor Structure of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire among Undergraduate Students
Objective Although several exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses have supported the initially proposed factor structure of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire (SPQ) in which its nine subscales are grouped into cognitive-perceptual, interpersonal, and disorganized domains, others have revealed different latent structures. This study determined the best-fitting factor structure from among five models that have been proposed in the literature, as well as five additional hierarchically related models. Method Undergraduate college students (n=825) completed the SPQ as well as the Perceptual Aberration Scale (PAS) and the Revised Social Anhedonia Scale (SAS). Confirmatory factor analyses involving the nine SPQ subscales were conducted using the Linear Structural Relations Program (LISREL 8.72). Results The best fitting model was a previously described 4-factor model including cognitiveperceptual, paranoid, negative, and disorganized domains. Correlations between the derived SPQ domains and the PAS score ranged r=.26–.39, and correlations between the SPQ domains and the SAS ranged r=.07–.41. Conclusions The present findings support a 4-factor model over the standard 3-factor model that is typically used to derive SPQ subscale scores. The four derived domains are minimally to moderately correlated with other measures of psychosis-proneness
Through the Kinesthetic Lens : Observation of Social Attunement in Autism Spectrum Disorders
© 2017 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland. This article is an open access article distributed under the terms and conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) license (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/).This paper will present a movement-informed perspective to social attunement in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). BACKGROUND: Dance movement therapy (DMT) is a psychotherapeutic intervention that is used with participants with ASD in various settings. Regular clinical outcome monitoring in an outpatient setting in the Netherlands had shown positive effects on social attunement capacities in young people with ASD. However, a systematic study of the development of social attunement movement behaviors of participants with ASD throughout a DMT intervention was not yet available. METHODS: A series of individual cases of DMT with young people with ASD (mean age 12.2 years.) were analyzed for changes in interpersonal movement behaviors employing video-based retrospective observation. RESULTS: The findings were summarized in an observation scale for interpersonal movement behaviors. This scale was then tested for its applicability for the monitoring of social attunement behaviors throughout therapy. DISCUSSION: A movement-informed perspective may be helpful to inventory changes in social attunement behaviors in participants with ASD. The relevance of a movement-informed perspective for the concept of social attunement in ASD will be discussed.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
An examination of the factorial structure of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire–Brief (SPQ-B) among undergraduate students
Cognitive-perceptual, interpersonal, and disorganized subscales of the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire–Brief (SPQ-B), reflecting the three commonly used subscales of the full-version SPQ, have been used in a number of studies. However, the factorial validity of SPQB subscales remains to be clarified. Utilizing data from 825 undergraduate students, confirmatory factor analyses involving the 22 items of the SPQ-B were conducted. A significant χ2 difference test favored the 3-factor over the 1-factor model and fit indices for the 3-factor model were generally satisfactory. However, several of the items may index more than one of the hypothesized factors, so the item-factor separation is not sharp. Thus, more research is needed on the factorial validity of the increasingly used SPQ-B subscales
