Coordinating Knowledge Work in Multi-Team Programs: Findings from a Large-Scale Agile Development Program

    Get PDF
Software development projects have undergone remarkable changes with the arrival of agile development methods. While intended for small, self-managing teams, these methods are increasingly used also for large development programs. A major challenge in programs is to coordinate the work of many teams, due to high uncertainty in tasks, a high degree of interdependence between tasks and because of the large number of people involved. This revelatory case study focuses on how knowledge work is coordinated in large-scale agile development programs by providing a rich description of the coordination practices used and how these practices change over time in a four year development program with 12 development teams. The main findings highlight the role of coordination modes based on feedback, the use of a number of mechanisms far beyond what is described in practitioner advice, and finally how coordination practices change over time. The findings are important to improve the outcome of large knowledge-based development programs by tailoring coordination practices to needs and ensuring adjustment over time.Comment: To appear in Project Management Journa

Benefits of Exercise for Individuals in Remission from Substance Use Disorders

This study sought to explore how physical exercise impacts individuals in early remission from substance use disorders and explored which exercise interventions might be particularly conducive to supporting sustained remission. The purpose of this exploratory, qualitative study is to gain insight regarding the impact of exercise on early recovery from a substance use disorder. Qualitative interviews were conducted specifically by asking questions regarding an individual\u27s involvement with exercise in early recovery and throughout remission, in what setting or settings exercise took place, types of exercise programs utilized, how exercise impacted mental and physical health from respondents\u27 perspectives, and to what extent there were social aspects of their exercise routine. All of this was with a goal of better understanding physical exercise as a potential resource for those in early recovery in order to help professionals, such as social workers, to better support clients in capitalizing on this potential resource in achieving and maintaining sustained remission

    Florence Price: Forgotten No More

    Get PDF
Florence Price was a composer and musician who lived from 1887 to 1953. She composed music in every genre except for opera. The music of Florence Price traveled practically everywhere; from the radio to the concert halls to the church. Throughout her life, she became well-known as the first African American female composer who was featured by a major symphony. Florence Price was tenacious, brave, and courageous during her era which contributed to the level of acceptance that society now holds for African American composers. Despite the challenges she faced during her lifetime, she never gave up or collapsed due to the pressures. However, she was erased from history until a recent discovery of her unpublished manuscripts were found in 2009. Due to that discovery, both scholars and the public alike have realized that her music transcends classical music norms because she also included African American spirituals and other motifs within her compositions. Price’s music intrigues both performers and audiences which has contributed to her rise in current popularity. From the way Price subtly alluded to struggles in her own life in her compositions, one can easily be transported into another realm and contemplate life from her perspective. Overall, the life of Florence Price presents much that can be learned both on a personal and musical level

A qualitative study of corporate environmental reporting through the reporting software, Synergi Life

    Get PDF
The term sustainability is infiltrating every corner of the society these days, and the corporate world is no exception. The focus among stakeholders and the society at large is on corporations’ responsibility towards society. More information about and insight in a company’s business is becoming more demanded by stakeholders, in order for them to get a better overview of the corporate world’s sustainability. Being transparent, by reporting environmental, social, and governmental (ESG) information, is a relevant measure for companies to give the stakeholder and the society the information they need. However, such reporting is not universally mandatory and there are no universal rules, requirements nor standards that tell companies exactly how ESG reporting should be done and what information such reports must include. Therefore, the way companies report today is often very different from each other which makes it difficult for stakeholders to evaluate and compare similar companies. The latter issue is very broad and can be interoperated and research from many perspectives. This thesis is however, mainly focusing on the environmental aspect of ESG reporting. This is done by using a reporting software called Synergi Life as an example. Synergi Life is an established reporting software owned by DNV (Det Norske Vertias) that makes it possible for companies across sectors to report information on different matter such as, environmental activities. This qualitative study is using collected data from the software as well as participants with different roles to create an example that shows the main challenges of environmental reporting, from the companies’ perspective as well as the stakeholder’s perspective. Relevant theories such as stakeholder theory, shareholder theory and legitimacy theory are used together with other relevant studies that presents the guidelines, initiatives, and requirements of ESG reporting to give a broad foundation for the discussion and analysis

English Learner Perceptions And Interactions In Mainstream Versus Small Group Environments

This case study examined English learner’s perceptions of their mainstream and ESL classes and measured interaction levels of English learners within the mainstream classroom. Student perception of their ESL class can be complex, relating to issues of linguistic and cultural identity as well as academic achievement. Additionally, interaction is integral for English learners to gain access to linguistic and academic resources in the mainstream classroom. Results showed that English learners held conflicting views on languages and language learning. They also percieved significant differences between mainstream and ESL classes. Students’ interaction levels in the mainstream classroom were decidedly higher when placed in small group or one-to-one contexts. These results are used to offer suggestions on increasing English learners’ access to academic resources in the mainstream classroom, as well as ideas on how to counter the self-doubt and uncertainty English learners had about their linguistic abilities

Lemon: an MPI parallel I/O library for data encapsulation using LIME

We introduce Lemon, an MPI parallel I/O library that is intended to allow for efficient parallel I/O of both binary and metadata on massively parallel architectures. Motivated by the demands of the Lattice Quantum Chromodynamics community, the data is stored in the SciDAC Lattice QCD Interchange Message Encapsulation format. This format allows for storing large blocks of binary data and corresponding metadata in the same file. Even if designed for LQCD needs, this format might be useful for any application with this type of data profile. The design, implementation and application of Lemon are described. We conclude with presenting the excellent scaling properties of Lemon on state of the art high performance computers
