Gentrification in the Athenian Context: the Gas Neighbourhood Case Study

    Get PDF
Discourse on the phenomenon of gentrification has mainly focused on western cities of the US, Canada and the UK. However gentrification is experienced worldwide. Nonetheless as the socioeconomic and political context is different in each city, the process develops differently in each case with regard to the distinct background. However, research about gentrification in the Mediterranean region is limited. From this viewpoint this article deals with the gentrification process of the Athenian inner district of Gas. Although gentrification is privately led, the role of the State is crucial for the development and implication of this urban trend. Governments, central and local, facilitate this process and encourage private investments as in the short term they gain benefits and economic profits. However, in Gas the attraction of outside capital in special forms such as entertainment amenities overruns the local potential. This change in land-use results in the displacement of the local population, thus encouraging the conquest of the city’s core by the middle and affluent income classes. The article highlights the process of gentrification in this inner city area of Athens. Its basic purpose is to draw some general conclusions of the gentrification process in the Southern European context of Athens.

THE IMPACT OF CAP REFORM ON ROMANIAN AGRICULTURE

The paper attempts to evaluate, on the basis of two scenarios (moderate and radical), the effects of CAP reforming compared to the situation of current CAP scenario and its effects upon welfare. Direct payments for the large farms, some of them operating on thousands of hectares, cannot contribute to the objective of supporting farmers’ incomes. The solution for the modernization of rural areas seems to be their “urbanization”, through investments in infrastructure, development of community services and a move away from farming to other economic sectors.CAP reform, welfare effects, direct payments, rural development, Agricultural and Food Policy, Political Economy, Q10, Q18,

An assessment of the impact of possible CAP reform scenarios on Romanian agriculture

    Get PDF
Using a simplified model, with key-variable the prices of two different possible scenarios of CAP reform after 2013 (moderate and radical), this paper present a comparison between the price effects of implementation of each reform scenario at 2015 horizon on Romanian agriculture. This short analysis shows that, under the presented hypotheses, the net welfare effect, due to the price changes, for the selected products, is positive in both reform scenarios, yet greater in the case of the radical reform. Integrated in the large context of Romanian development, it seems that the influence of CAP reform upon agriculture and rural areas will be most likely a gradual one: an interpenetration between the two scenarios is foreseeable, starting with the moderate reform that will dominate the period around 2013, the reform measures acquiring a more radical character afterwards.CAP reform, Romania, welfare effects, Agricultural and Food Policy,

Sustainable Urban Future in Southern Europe - What About the Heat Island Effect?

    Get PDF
In general cities, and especially cities in hot zones, as the Mediterranean, suffer from raised temperatures in the city core, generally known as the heat island effect. Raised temperatures, especially in summer, may turn city centres into unwelcome hot areas, with direct effects on energy consumption for cooling buildings and morbidity and mortality risks for the population. These raised temperatures in the city centre derive from the altered thermal balances in urban spaces, mainly due to the materials and activities taking place in cities, by far different to those in rural areas. The notably raised thermal capacity of urban materials, their low albedo and their lack of porosity are of the main characteristics of urban materials, responsible for the formation of raised urban temperatures. The general lack of vegetation is a strong characteristic of the formation of the heat island effect. If building surfaces, which are greatly responsible for the formation of raised urban temperatures are covered with vegetation (roofs with grasses and walls with ivies), it is expected that urban temperatures could lower significantly. With the case study of the city of Athens, this paper explores quantitatively how raised urban temperatures could reduce in the hot and dry Mediterranean summer, when the building envelope is covered with vegetation. With the use of a prognostic, two-dimensional, micro-scale heat and mass transfer model, the effect of vegetation in urban canyons with different geometries and orientations is explored and how this could be applied at an urban scale. The effect of vegetation on the building envelope is examined on the outdoors thermal comfort and the energy consumption for cooling. Conclusions are drawn about the relationship of the effect of diverse amounts of vegetation with the urban geometry and orientation and whether such a proposal could prove beneficial for cities in the South of Europe.

Transformations of "Home" in Contemporary Greek Drama: From a Domicentric View toward Space Decenterings

    Get PDF
Theatre is made in space as well as of space. This assumption indicates not only that theatre needs space to unfold its performative power, but also that space is intrinsic to theatrical experience itself. This has led to various experimentations in the theatrical field both in the modern and postmodern era, questioning the performance-audience relationship and causing the emergence of new forms of subjectivity in relation to the lived experience through space. This paper explores the ways these shifts have penetrated the dramatic discourse in contemporary Greek drama, thus forming multiple layers of depiction of the postmodern conscience. Through the examination of six plays, which cover the past three decades, the paper will trace the successive transformations of “home,” a space that has been prevalent in global as well as Greek dramaturgy of modern years

Design of an Optimal Testbed for Tracking of Tagged Marine Megafauna

Underwater acoustic technologies are a key component for exploring the behavior of marine megafauna such as sea turtles, sharks, and seals. The animals are marked with acoustic devices (tags) that periodically emit signals encoding the device's ID along with sensor data such as depth, temperature, or the dominant acceleration axis - data that is collected by a network of deployed receivers. In this work, we aim to optimize the locations of receivers for best tracking of acoustically tagged marine megafauna. The outcomes of such tracking allows the evaluation of the animals' motion patterns, their hours of activity, and their social interactions. In particular, we focus on how to determine the receivers' deployment positions to maximize the coverage area in which the tagged animals can be tracked. For example, an overly-condensed deployment may not allow accurate tracking, whereas a sparse one, may lead to a small coverage area due to too few detections. We formalize the question of where to best deploy the receivers as a non-convex constraint optimization problem that takes into account the local environment and the specifications of the tags, and offer a sub-optimal, low-complexity solution that can be applied to large testbeds. Numerical investigation for three stimulated sea environments shows that our proposed method is able to increase the localization coverage area by 30%, and results from a test case experiment demonstrate similar performance in a real sea environment. We share the implementation of our work to help researchers set up their own acoustic observatory.Comment: Submitted for publication in Frontiers in Marine Science, special topic on Tracking Marine Megafauna for Conservation and Marine Spatial Plannin
