Cerebral oedema with coning in diabetic keto-acidosis: Report of 2 survivors
Two children presented with a first episode of diabetic ketoacidosis. Initially both patients made a good clinical and biochemical recovery, but suddenly developed neurological signs consistent with a diagnosis of tentorial herniation. Cranial computed tomography showed signs of cerebral oedema in both cases with evidence of uncal and tentorial herniation in 1 patient, which resolved after the appropriate treatment. The excellent neurological outcome emphasises the need for early recognition and treatment of sudden onset brain oedema in diabetic keto-acidosis
Best practice methodology for 14C calibration of marine and mixed terrestrial/marine samples
There is a lack of detailed guidance in the published literature on how to calibrate 14C measurements made on marine or mixed marine/terrestrial (primarily human remains) samples. We describe what we consider to be the best approach towards achieving the most accurate calibrated age ranges, using the most appropriate ΔR and percentage marine diet estimates, and associated, realistic error terms on these values. However, this approach will increase the calibrated age range(s) by fully accounting for the variability in both the model and the material. While the discussion is based on examples from the UK and Iceland, the same fundamental arguments can be applied in any geographic location largely devoid of C4 plants as the high δ13C values from such plants can make identification of marine intake difficult to determine

An immunoreactive digitalis-like substance in normotensive and hypertensive people
The original publication is available at http://www.samj.org.zaA study confirmed the existence of an immune reactive digitalis-like substance in normotensive and hypertensive people between the ages of 15 years and 64 years. In 13,6% of the population examined, values higher than 0,15 ng/ml of digitalis-like substances were obtained. The possible presence of this substance in a large proportion of patients should be borne in mind when interpreting digitalis measurements.Publisher’s versio
Corrosion behaviour of cobalt-based coatings with ruthenium additions in synthetic mine water
The corrosion behaviour of two cobalt-based coatings (ULTIMET™ and STELLITE™ 6) with zero, 0.3 and 0.6 wt% ruthenium were studied and compared with two cobalt-based bulk alloys (ULTIMET™ and STELLITE™ 6B) in synthetic mine water (pH values of 6, 3 and 1) using potentiodynamic polarisation. The coatings demonstrated wider ranges of passivation behaviour (from −250 mV to 750 mV) than the bulk alloys. The corrosion potential became more positive and the active-passive transition reduced with increased Ru. The best coating was STELLITE™ 6 with 0.6 wt% Ru, which exhibited the lowest corrosion rates: 3.6 μm/y at pH 6 and 6.4 μm/y at pH 3
