Failure to discharge : a discussion of the insufficient legal recourse afforded to judgment debtors in the South African context

AGORA International Journal of Juridical Sciences is listed as an open access journal at SHERPA RoMEO http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo and DOAJ http://doaj.org.University Legal Aid Clinics are often confronted with aspects of the law which are quite alien to those faced by our colleagues in private practice. One such area is that of assisting judgment debtors who have fallen afoul of disreputable and often immoral money lenders and other judgment creditors. These creditors unilaterally charge exuberant and unlawful fees for interest and ‘legal’ costs, which amounts are simply added to the judgments ex post facto. The issue of discharge then becomes hugely problematic as the courts do not mero motu step in to cancel emoluments attachment orders and other tools of collection employed by these creditors. It is argued that the South African legal system, including legislation in this regard, lends insufficient protection and recourse to indigent legal aid clients faced with this situation.Post-prin

Bruker2nifti: Magnetic Resonance Images converter from Bruker ParaVision to Nifti format

    Get PDF
In clinical and pre-clinical research involving medical images, the first step following a Magnetic Resonance Imaging dataset acquisition, usually entails the conversion of image data from the native scanner format to a format suitable for the intended analysis. The proprietary [Bruker ParaVision](https://www.bruker.com/products/mr/preclinical-mri/software/service-support.html) software currently does not provide the tools for conversion of the data to suitable and open formats for research, such as nifti [@cox2004sort], for which most of the available tools for medical image analysis are implemented. For this purpose we have designed and developed [bruker2nifti](https://github.com/SebastianoF/bruker2nifti), a pip-installable Python tool provided with a Graphical User Interface to convert from the native MRI Bruker format to the nifti format, without any intermediate step through the DICOM standard formats [@Mildenberger2002]. Bruker2nifti is intended to be a tool to access the data structure and to parse all parameter files of the Bruker ParaVision format into python dictionaries, to select the relevant information to fill the Nifti header and data volume. Lastly it is meant to be a starting point where to integrate possible future variations in Bruker hardware and ParaVision software future releases

It is all in the looks: A rapid field-based visual assessment tool for evaluating the spawning likelihood of the Asian green mussel, Perna viridis (Linnaeus, 1758)

Numerous interceptions of Perna viridis on vessels entering Western Australian waters prompted the development of a rapid field-based assessment technique for determining reproductive status and hence spawning likelihood of P. viridis. The visual assessment tool and spawning likelihood matrix were developed using correlations between laboratory-based assessments of P. viridis size, colour and egg size in combination with field-based validations from mussels collected on vessels in Western Australian waters. The spawning likelihood matrix provides an immediate indicator of whether the mussel is low, medium or high likelihood of spawning. Mussels were recorded initiating gonad tissue development from approximately 6.5 mm in length, with the mean size of mature animals 59.6 mm. There was a positive correlation between mussel size and stage of reproductive development. Gonad colour, however, appeared to be a more accurate indicator of gonad maturity than mussel size. Female mussels showed a decrease in gonad colour intensity following spawning. Mussels that scored 1 for colour (potential score 1–3) generally had a low proportion of mature eggs (< 70 % mature eggs). Over 60% of the mussels with a colour score of 2 contained 70–100% mature eggs, indicating the capacity for further spawning. Mussels were assigned an overall spawning likelihood score (through the spawning likelihood matrix) based on the proportion of the visceral mass occupied by gonad tissues (% gonad cover, value from 1–3) and overall colour of gonads (value from 1–3). The spawning likelihood score was significantly related to the percentage of mature eggs present, and hence the spawning potential of the mussel. The matrix provides an immediate indicator of the risk of spawning posed by the sample. As such, it is expected that application of the matrix in situ would enable the potential likelihood posed by P. viridis translocated on vessels to be determined quickly and efficiently

The effect of different anaesthetic mask shapes on the anatomical dead space using infant, child and adult part-task trainers

Dead space is the portion of tidal volume that does not participate in alveolar gas exchange. The purpose of this study was to compare the dead space contribution of differently shaped masks, of the same size, by measuring the volume of each mask. The study was conducted in the Clinical Simulation Unit of the School of Medicine, University of the Free State (UFS) using formed masks with inflatable polyvinylchloride (PVC) cuffs and rounded masks with non-inflatable PVC cuffs. The masks were placed on the faces of the infant, child and adult part-task trainers as well as on a flat surface. The cuffs of the formed masks were inflated to 5 cm water and 70 cm water. Masks were filled with water and the volume was measured. The volumes (ml) of the masks on the flat surface were significantly larger than those measured on the part-task trainers’ faces. The volume of the rounded masks was greater than the volume of the formed masks. The amount of cuff inflation pressure (5 cm water vs. 70 cm water) did not lead to a significant change in mask volume: 102.3 ml (standard deviation [SD] 75.9) vs. 110.2 ml (SD 82.3), averaged for all sizes.Formed masks contribute less to anatomical dead space than rounded masks and are thus possibly the better choice. Cuff inflation pressure has insignificant influence on dead space volume. Keywords: anaesthesia, anatomical dead space, inhalation, masks, pulmonary ventilation, respirator

Treatment of severe alcoholic hepatitis: A systematic review

    Get PDF
Severe alcoholic hepatitis is the most severe form of alcohol-related liver disease. Corticosteroids remain the first choice of treatment. However, they are only effective in a subset of patients and are associated with an increased infection risk. Furthermore, nonresponders to corticosteroids have a poor prognosis with a mortality of 70% over 6 months. As such, there is a high need for a more personalized use of corticosteroids and the development and identification of alternative therapeutic strategies. In this review, we summarize the recent and ongoing randomized controlled trials concerning the treatment of severe alcoholic hepatitis
