Measuring thermal conductivity in extreme conditions: sub-Kelvin temperatures and high (27 T) magnetic fields
We present a one-heater-two-thermometer set-up for measuring thermal
conductivity and electric resistivity of a bulk sample at low temperatures down
to 0.1 K and in magnetic fields up to 27 Tesla. The design overcomes the
difficulties emerging in the context of large water-cooled resistive magnets.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figure
Enzyme-induced Formation of ß-Lactoglobulin Fibrils by AspN Endoproteinase
This paper describes a low temperature, enzymatic route to induce fibrillar structures in a protein solution. The route comprises two steps. First, ß-lactoglobulin was hydrolyzed into peptides at pH 8 and 37°C with the enzyme AspN endoproteinase, which resulted in the formation of random aggregates. After hydrolysis, the pH was lowered to 2. As a result, long fibrillar aggregates were formed which was observed using transmission electron microscopy and Thioflavin T fluorescence measurements
The Critical Aggregation Concentration of ß-Lactoglobulin-Based Fibril Formation
The critical aggregation concentration (CAC) for fibril formation of ß-lactoglobulin (ß-lg) at pH 2 was determined at 343, 353, 358, 363, and 383 K using a Thioflavin T assay and was approximately 0.16 wt%. The accuracy of the CAC was increased by measuring the conversion into fibrils at different stirring speeds. The corresponding binding energy per mol, as determined from the CAC, was 13 RT (~40 kJ mol¿1) for the measured temperature range. The fact that the CAC was independent of temperature within the experimental error indicates that the fibril formation of ß-lg at pH 2 and the measured temperature range is an entropy-driven process
Alternative model of the Antonov problem
Astrophysical systems will never be in a real Thermodynamic equilibrium: they
undergo an evaporation process due to the fact that the gravity is not able to
confine the particles. Ordinarily, this difficulty is overcome by enclosing the
system in a rigid container which avoids the evaporation. We proposed an
energetic prescription which is able to confine the particles, leading in this
way to an alternative version of the Antonov isothermal model which unifies the
well-known isothermal and polytropic profiles. Besides of the main features of
the isothermal sphere model: the existence of the gravitational collapse and
the energetic region with a negative specific heat, this alternative model has
the advantage that the system size naturally appears as a consequence of the
particles evaporation.Comment: RevTex4, 9 pages, 10 figures, Version Submitted to PR
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation in the treatment of myofascial pain dysfunction
PKThe effect of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) plus conservative therapy (ibuprofen, bite plate, self-physiotherapy) on myofascial pain dysfunction (MPD) was determined. A single-blind trial as done in 10 patients with MPD with subthreshold TENS (frequency 35 Hz, pulse width 100 milliseconds, modulation 50%) compared with sham TENS at 8 visits over 14 weeks. Pain was assessed on a visual analogue scale before and after TENS at each visit and the data were analysed with the analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures. A highly significant effect was seen for time (F = 4.80, P = 0.0003) but not for TENS. Subthreshold TENS did not increase the symptom relief produced by conservative treatment with the protocol used

Porosity measurements of interstellar ice mixtures using optical laser interference and extended effective medium approximations
Aims. This article aims to provide an alternative method of measuring the
porosity of multi-phase composite ices from their refractive indices and of
characterising how the abundance of a premixed contaminant (e.g., CO2) affects
the porosity of water-rich ice mixtures during omni-directional deposition.
Methods. We combine optical laser interference and extended effective medium
approximations (EMAs) to measure the porosity of three astrophysically relevant
ice mixtures: H2O:CO2=10:1, 4:1, and 2:1. Infrared spectroscopy is used as a
benchmarking test of this new laboratory-based method. Results. By
independently monitoring the O-H dangling modes of the different water-rich ice
mixtures, we confirm the porosities predicted by the extended EMAs. We also
demonstrate that CO2 premixed with water in the gas phase does not
significantly affect the ice morphology during omni-directional deposition, as
long as the physical conditions favourable to segregation are not reached. We
propose a mechanism in which CO2 molecules diffuse on the surface of the
growing ice sample prior to being incorporated into the bulk and then fill the
pores partly or completely, depending on the relative abundance and the growth
temperature.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in A&
