    Animal attacks - a red herring of child abuse?

    Injuries sustained as a result of attacks by domestic animals, particularly canines, are occasionally encountered at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trauma Unit in Cape Town. Less than 1% of admissions are directly attributable to animal attacks. Animal attacks causing lethal injuries are very rare and should be assessed carefully.     Systematic study of Coulomb distortion effects in exclusive (e,e'p) reactions

    A technique to deal with Coulomb electron distortions in the analysis of (e,e'p) reactions is presented. Thereby, no approximations are made. The suggested technique relies on a partial-wave expansion of the electron wave functions and a multipole decomposition of the electron and nuclear current in momentum space. In that way, we succeed in keeping the computational times within reasonable limits. This theoretical framework is used to calculate the quasielastic (e,e'p) reduced cross sections for proton knockout from the valence shells in 16^{16}O, 40^{40}Ca, 90^{90}Zr and 208^{208}Pb. The final-state interaction of the ejected proton with the residual nucleus is treated within an optical potential model.     Maze learning and memory in a decapod crustacean

    Spatial learning is an ecologically important trait well studied in vertebrates but only in a few invertebrates and poorly understood in crustaceans. We explored the ability of European shore crabs, Carcinus maenas, to learn a complex maze over four consecutive weeks using food as a motivator. Crabs showed a steady improvement in their ability to learn and use the maze to find food during this conditioning period. Improvements were seen both in the time taken to find the food and in a reduciton in the number of wrong turns taken before the food was located. Crabs also clearly showed the ability to remember the maze. When we returned them to the maze following a two week break, but without any food in the maze, they all returned to the end of the maze in under eight minutes. Crabs that had not been conditioned to the maze took far longer to reach the end and 42% of individuals did not get to the end of the maze at all during a one-hour study period. Our study provides an initial description of spatial learning in the European shore crab. Bettering our understanding of this adaptive trait will develop our understanding of resource exploitation by benthic crustaceans and their ecological roles

    The polarization degrees of freedom in photoinduced two-nucleon knockout from finite nuclei are studied. It is pointed out that they open good perspectives to study the dynamics of dinucleons in the medium in detail. The (γ,pp\gamma,pp) and (γ,pn\gamma,pn) angular cross sections, photon asymmetries and outgoing nucleon polarizations are calculated for the target nuclei 16^{16}O and 12^{12}C and photonenergies ranging from 100 up to 500 MeV. It is investigated to which degree the two-nucleon emission reaction is dominated by photoabsorption on 3S1(T=0)^3S_1(T=0) proton-neutron and 1S0(T=1)^1S_0(T=1) proton-proton pairs in the nuclear medium. The calculations demonstrate that dominance of SS wave photoabsorption in the (γ,pn\gamma,pn) channel does not necessarily imply that the reaction mechanism is similar to what is observed in deuteron photodisintegration.Comment: 27 pages, REVTeX 3.0 with epsf.sty, 11 figures in EPS forma

    Deficiency in type 1 insulin-like growth factor receptor in mice protects against oxygen-induced lung injury

    BACKGROUND: Cellular responses to aging and oxidative stress are regulated by type 1 insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-1R). Oxidant injury, which is implicated in the pathophysiology of a number of respiratory diseases, acutely upregulates IGF-1R expression in the lung. This led us to suspect that reduction of IGF-1R levels in lung tissue could prevent deleterious effects of oxygen exposure. METHODS: Since IGF-1R null mutant mice die at birth from respiratory failure, we generated compound heterozygous mice harboring a hypomorphic (Igf-1r(neo)) and a knockout (Igf-1r(-)) receptor allele. These IGF-1R(neo/- )mice, strongly deficient in IGF-1R, were subjected to hyperoxia and analyzed for survival time, ventilatory control, pulmonary histopathology, morphometry, lung edema and vascular permeability. RESULTS: Strikingly, after 72 h of exposure to 90% O(2), IGF-1R(neo/- )mice had a significantly better survival rate during recovery than IGF-1R(+/+ )mice (77% versus 53%, P < 0.05). The pulmonary injury was consistently, and significantly, milder in IGF-1R(neo/- )mice which developed conspicuously less edema and vascular extravasation than controls. Also, hyperoxia-induced abnormal pattern of breathing which precipitated respiratory failure was elicited less frequently in the IGF-1R(neo/- )mice. CONCLUSION: Together, these data demonstrate that a decrease in IGF-1R signaling in mice protects against oxidant-induced lung injury

    A rapid and robust tri-color flow cytometry assay for monitoring malaria parasite development

    Microscopic examination of Giemsa-stained thin blood smears remains the gold standard method used to quantify and stage malaria parasites. However, this technique is tedious, and requires trained microscopists. We have developed a fast and simple flow cytometry method to quantify and stage, various malaria parasites in red blood cells in whole blood or in vitro cultured Plasmodium falciparum. The parasites were stained with dihydroethidium and Hoechst 33342 or SYBR Green I and leukocytes were identified with an antibody against CD45. Depending on the DNA stains used, samples were analyzed using different models of flow cytometers. This protocol, which does not require any washing steps, allows infected red blood cells to be distinguished from leukocytes, as well as allowing non-infected reticulocytes and normocytes to be identified. It also allows assessing the proportion of parasites at different developmental stages. Lastly, we demonstrate how this technique can be applied to antimalarial drug testing
