    Surface defreezing of glasses

    A glass surface may still flow below the bulk glass transition temperature, where the underlying bulk is frozen. Assuming the existence at T=T* of a bulk thermodynamical glass transition, we show that the glass-vapor interface is generally wetted by a liquid layer of thickness ~ -ln(T*-T) when T--> T*. Contrary to standard surface melting of crystals however, the integrated value of the diffusivity across the interface remains finite for T-->T*. Difference in shape induced by bulk and by surface flow is discussed as a possible means of experimental detection of surface defreezing.Comment: five pages, three figure

    HST Snapshot Survey of Post-AGB Objects

    The results from a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) snapshot survey of post-AGB objects are shown. The aim of the survey is to complement existing HST images of PPN and to connect various types of nebulosities with physical and chemical properties of their central stars. Nebulosities are detected in 15 of 33 sources. Images and photometric and geometric measurements are presented. For sources with nebulosities we see a morphological bifurcation into two groups, DUPLEX and SOLE, as previous studies have found. We find further support to the previous results suggesting that this dichotomy is caused by a difference in optical thickness of the dust shell. The remaining 18 sources are classified as stellar post-AGB objects, because our observations indicate a lack of nebulosity. We show that some stellar sources may in fact be DUPLEX or SOLE based on their infrared colors. The cause of the differences among the groups are investigated. We discuss some evidence suggesting that high progenitor-mass AGB stars tend to become DUPLEX post-AGB objects. Intermediate progenitor-mass AGB stars tend to be SOLE post-AGB objects. Most of the stellar sources probably have low mass progenitors and do not seem to develop nebulosities during the post-AGB phase and therefore do not become planetary nebulae.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figure

    Modeling schemes, which compute the propagation of ultrasonic wave fields, serve as research tools in NDE. The objectives to use such schemes are diverse. Firstly, they may be used to set the requirements for the ultrasonic data acquisition method and the processing algorithm. Secondly, they may be used to improve understanding of the actual measurement, i.e. for interpretation. Thirdly, they may play a central role in the inversion of the measurement for defect characterization, i.e. model driven inversion and neural network training

    The structure of cometary dust is a tracer of growth processes in the formation of planetesimals. Instrumentation on board the Rosetta mission to comet 67P/Churyumov- Gerasimenko captured dust particles and analysed them in situ. However, these deposits are a product of a collision within the instrument. We conducted laboratory experiments with cometary dust analogues, simulating the collection process by Rosetta instruments (specifically COSIMA, MIDAS). In Paper I we reported that velocity is a key driver in determining the appearance of deposits. Here in Paper II we use materials with different monomer sizes, and study the effect of tensile strength on the appearance of deposits. We find that mass transfer efficiency increases from \sim1 up to \sim10% with increasing monomer diameter from 0.3 μ\mum to 1.5 μ\mum (i.e. tensile strength decreasing from \sim12 to \sim3 kPa), and velocities increasing from 0.5 to 6 m/s. Also, the relative abundance of small fragments after impact is higher for material with higher tensile strength. The degeneracy between the effects of velocity and material strength may be lifted by performing a closer study of the deposits. This experimental method makes it possible to estimate the mass transfer efficiency in the COSIMA instrument. Extrapolating these results implies that more than half of the dust collected during the Rosetta mission has not been imaged. We analysed two COSIMA targets containing deposits from single collisions.     Muscle recruitment strategies can reduce joint loading during level walking

    Joint inflammation, with consequent cartilage damage and pain, typically reduces functionality and affects activities of daily life in a variety of musculoskeletal diseases. Since mechanical loading is an important determinant of the disease process, a possible conservative treatment is the unloading of joints. In principle, a neuromuscular rehabilitation program aimed to promote alternative muscle recruitments could reduce the loads on the lower-limb joints during walking. The extent of joint load reduction one could expect from this approach remains unknown. Furthermore, assuming significant reductions of the load on the affected joint can be achieved, it is unclear whether, and to what extent, the other joints will be overloaded. Using subject-specific musculoskeletal models of four different participants, we computed the muscle recruitment strategies that minimised the hip, knee and ankle contact force, and predicted the contact forces such strategies induced at the other joints. Significant reductions of the peak force and impulse at the knee and hip were obtained, while only a minimal effect was found at the ankle joint. Adversely, the peak force and the impulse in non-targeted joints increased when aiming to minimize the load in an adjacent joint. These results confirm the potential of alternative muscle recruitment strategies to reduce the loading at the knee and the hip, but not at the ankle. Therefore, neuromuscular rehabilitation can be targeted to reduce the loading at affected joints but must be considered carefully in patients with multiple joints affected due to the potential adverse effects in non-targeted joints

    The footprint of cometary dust analogs: I. Laboratory experiments of low-velocity impacts and comparison with Rosetta data

    Cometary dust provides a unique window on dust growth mechanisms during the onset of planet formation. Measurements by the Rosetta spacecraft show that the dust in the coma of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko has a granular structure at size scales from sub-um up to several hundreds of um, indicating hierarchical growth took place across these size scales. However, these dust particles may have been modified during their collection by the spacecraft instruments. Here we present the results of laboratory experiments that simulate the impact of dust on the collection surfaces of COSIMA and MIDAS, instruments onboard the Rosetta spacecraft. We map the size and structure of the footprints left by the dust particles as a function of their initial size (up to several hundred um) and velocity (up to 6 m/s). We find that in most collisions, only part of the dust particle is left on the target; velocity is the main driver of the appearance of these deposits. A boundary between sticking/bouncing and fragmentation as an outcome of the particle-target collision is found at v ~ 2 m/s. For velocities below this value, particles either stick and leave a single deposit on the target plate, or bounce, leaving a shallow footprint of monomers. At velocities > 2 m/s and sizes > 80 um, particles fragment upon collision, transferring up to 50 per cent of their mass in a rubble-pile-like deposit on the target plate. The amount of mass transferred increases with the impact velocity. The morphologies of the deposits are qualitatively similar to those found by the COSIMA instrument.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    Molecular mechanism of influenza A NS1-mediated TRIM25 recognition and inhibition

    RIG-I is a viral RNA sensor that induces the production of type I interferon (IFN) in response to infection with a variety of viruses. Modification of RIG-I with K63-linked poly-ubiquitin chains, synthesised by TRIM25, is crucial for activation of the RIG-I/MAVS signalling pathway. TRIM25 activity is targeted by influenza A virus non-structural protein 1 (NS1) to suppress IFN production and prevent an efficient host immune response. Here we present structures of the human TRIM25 coiled-coil-PRYSPRY module and of complexes between the TRIM25 coiled-coil domain and NS1. These structures show that binding of NS1 interferes with the correct positioning of the PRYSPRY domain of TRIM25 required for substrate ubiquitination and provide a mechanistic explanation for how NS1 suppresses RIG-I ubiquitination and hence downstream signalling. In contrast, the formation of unanchored K63-linked poly-ubiquitin chains is unchanged by NS1 binding, indicating that RING dimerisation of TRIM25 is not affected by NS1

    H2O Maser Observations of Candidate Post-AGB Stars and Discovery of Three High-velocity Water Sources

    We present the results of 22 GHz H_2O maser observations of a sample of 85 post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) candidate stars, selected on the basis of their OH 1612 MHz maser and far-infrared properties. All sources were observed with the Tidbinbilla 70-m radio telescope and 21 detections were made. 86 GHz SiO Mopra observations of a subset of the sample are also presented. Of the 21 H_2O detections, 15 are from sources that are likely to be massive AGB stars and most of these show typical, regular H_2O maser profiles. In contrast, nearly all the detections of more evolved stars exhibited high-velocity H_2O maser emission. Of the five sources seen, v223 (W43A, IRAS 18450-0148) is a well known `water-fountain' source which belongs to a small group of post-AGB stars with highly collimated, high-velocity H_2O maser emission. A second source in our sample, v270 (IRAS 18596+0315), is also known to have high-velocity emission. We report the discovery of similar emission from a further three sources, d46 (IRAS 15445-5449), d62 (IRAS 15544-5332) and b292 (IRAS 18043-2116). The source d46 is an evolved post-AGB star with highly unusual maser properties. The H_2O maser emission from d62 is probably associated with a massive star. The source b292 is a young post-AGB star that is highly likely to be a water-fountain source, with masers detected over a velocity range of 210 km s^{-1}.Comment: 47 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, accepted by Ap

The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this record.Dredging activities to extend, deepen and maintain access to harbours generate significant volumes of waste dredged material. Some ways are investigated to add value to these sediments. One solution described here is their use in road construction following treatment with hydraulic binders. This paper presents the characterisation of four sediments, in their raw state and after 90 days of curing following stabilisation treatment with lime and cement, using a combination of novel and established analytical techniques to investigate subsequent changes in mineralogy. These sediments are classified as fine, moderately to highly organic and highly plastic and their behaviour is linked to the presence of smectite clays. The main minerals found in the sediments using X-rays diffraction (XRD) and automated mineralogy are quartz, calcite, feldspars, aluminium silicates, pyrite and halite. Stabilisation was found to improve the mechanical performances of all the sediments. The formation of cementitious hydrates was not specifically detected using automated mineralogy or XRD.
