    Re II and Other Exotic Spectra in HD 65949

    Powerful astronomical spectra reveal an urgent need for additional work on atomic lines, levels, and oscillator strengths. The star HD 65949 provides some excellent examples of species rarely identified in stellar spectra. For example, the Re II spectrum is well developed, with 17 lines between 3731 and 4904 [A], attributed wholly or partially to Re II. Classifications and oscillator strengths are lacking for a number of these lines. The spectrum of Os II is well identified. Of 14 lines attributed wholly or partially to Os II, only one has an entry in the VALD database. We find strong evidence that Te II is present. There are NO Te II lines in the VALD database. Ru II is clearly present, but oscillator strengths for lines in the visual are lacking. There is excellent to marginal evidence for a number of less commonly identified species, including Kr II, Nb II, Sb II, Xe II, Pr III, Ho III, Au II, and Pt II (probably Pt-198), to be present in the spectrum of HD 65949. The line Hg II at 3984 [A] is of outstanding strength, and all three lines of Multiplet 1 of Hg I are present, even though the surface temperature of HD 65949 is relatively high. Finally, we present the case of an unidentified, 24 [mA], line at 3859.63 [A], which could be the same feature seen in magnetic CP stars.     The role of ocelli in cockroach optomotor performance

    Insect ocelli are relatively simple eyes that have been assigned various functions not related to pictorial vision. In some species they function as sensors of ambient light intensity, from which information is relayed to various parts of the nervous system, e.g., for the control of circadian rhythms. In this work we have investigated the possibility that the ocellar light stimulation changes the properties of the optomotor performance of the cockroach Periplaneta americana. We used a virtual reality environment where a panoramic moving image is presented to the cockroach while its movements are recorded with a trackball. Previously we have shown that the optomotor reaction of the cockroach persists down to the intensity of moonless night sky, equivalent to less than 0.1 photons/s being absorbed by each compound eye photoreceptor. By occluding the compound eyes, the ocelli, or both, we show that the ocellar stimulation can change the intensity dependence of the optomotor reaction, indicating involvement of the ocellar visual system in the information processing of movement. We also measured the cuticular transmission, which, although relatively large, is unlikely to contribute profoundly to ocellar function, but may be significant in determining the mean activity level of completely blinded cockroaches

    Unlocking the power of big data in new product development

    This study explores how big data can be used to enable customers to express unrecognised needs. By acquiring this information, managers can gain opportunities to develop customer-centred products. Big data can be defined as multimedia-rich and interactive low-cost information resulting from mass communication. It offers customers a better understanding of new products and provides new, simplified modes of large-scale interaction between customers and firms. Although previous studies have pointed out that firms can better understand customers’ preferences and needs by leveraging different types of available data, the situation is evolving, with increasing application of big data analytics for product development, operations and supply chain management. In order to utilise the customer information available from big data to a larger extent, managers need to identify how to establish a customer-involving environment that encourages customers to share their ideas with managers, contribute their know-how, fiddle around with new products, and express their actual preferences. We investigate a new product development project at an electronics company, STE, and describe how big data is used to connect to, interact with and involve customers in new product development in practice. Our findings reveal that big data can offer customer involvement so as to provide valuable input for developing new products. In this paper, we introduce a customer involvement approach as a new means of coming up with customer-centred new product development

    The analysis of the spark spectrum of gadolinium (Gd II)

    The analysis of wavelength data of the Gd II spectrum has resulted in the detection of 108 odd and 70 even levels in addition to those reported by previous investigators. The total number of classified lines is now 2 200, belonging to 2 300 transitions between 162 odd and 150 even levels. The wavelength list, including the Gd I lines, contains over 18 500 lines in the wavelength region 2 468-8 752 Å. The Zeeman effect has been investigated in the wavelength region 2 700-11400 A. Of about 900 lines belonging to Gd II transitions the splitting has been observed. The g-values of all levels could be determined. The odd terms belong to the electron configurations 4 f7 5 d 6 s, 4 f7 6 s2, 4f7 5 d2 and the newly established 4 f8 6 p ; the even terms have been associated with the configurations 4 f8 6 s and 4 f8 5 d (see 4 f8 6 p), 4 f 7 6 s 6 p and 4 f7 5 d 6 p. Calculations have been carried out in the 4 f8(7F) 6 s, 5 d and 6 p subconfigurations. The values of the electrostatic and spin-orbit interaction parameters give a good least-squares fit to the experimental levels.L'analyse du spectre d'émission de Gd II a permis de découvrir 108 niveaux impairs et 70 niveaux pairs. Les 2 200 raies actuellement classées correspondent à 2 300 transitions entre 162 niveaux impairs et 150 niveaux pairs. Les longueurs d'onde de 18 500 raies de Gd I et Gd II ont été mesurées dans le domaine 2 468-8 752 A. On a observé la structure Zeeman de plus de 900 raies de Gd II entre 2 700 et 11400 A et le facteur de Landé de chaque niveau est maintenant connu. Les termes impairs appartiennent à 4 f7 5 d 6 s, 4 f 7 6 s2, 4 f7 5 d2 et à la nouvelle configuration 4 f8 6 p ; les termes pairs sont attribués à 4 f7 6 s 6 p, 4 f 7 5 d 6 p et aux nouvelles configurations 4 f8 6 s et 4 f8 5 d.
