Estimating financial failure in businesses using artificial neural networks : Turkish manufacturing industry model study

    Get PDF
Businesses need to be financially successful to achieve sustainable growth and maximise firm value. The financial failure of businesses is a situation that is carefully monitored by business managers, shareholders of the business, financial institutions that lend to the business, and the government. For this reason, in this study, the financial failure of 153 manufacturing companies operating in Turkey and traded on Borsa Istanbul has been tried to be estimated. In the research, the annual financial statements between the years 2009-2021 were used and artificial neural networks were preferred as the estimation method. Altman's Z score was used to define financial failure. In the artificial neural network model, 13 financial ratios were used as input variables. As the output variable, the firms that were below the value of 1.81 calculated as the Z score by Altman were considered unsuccessful, and the unsuccessful firms were assigned a value of 1 and the others a value of 0. This dummy variable consisting of 0 and 1 values is accepted as the output variable. According to the findings of the study, 1427 of 1631 observations that were initially considered to be financial failures were correctly estimated and a very high success rate of 87.49% was achieved. The findings will provide an important advantage to businesses and all stakeholders in terms of determining the causes of financial failure in advance.peer-reviewe

Is there any genetic predisposition of MMP-9 gene C1562T and MTHFR gene C677T polymorphisms with essential hypertension?

    Get PDF
The current study was conducted to determine whether there is a relation between hypertension and two different polymorphisms, including C1562T of the Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) gene and C677T of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene. Genomic DNA obtained from 224 persons (125 patients with hypertension and 99 healthy controls) were used in the study. Polymorphisms were determined by using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and electrophoresis. The results were statistically analyzed and were found to be statistically significant. The frequencies of the C1562T genotypes were found to be, in controls CC 75.8 % and CT 24.2 % and in patients CC 71.2 %, and CT 28.8 %. The frequencies of C677T genotype were found to be, in controls CC 56.6 %, CT 38.4 and TT 5.1 % in controls and in patients CC 52 %, CT 30.4 % and TT 17.6 %. In conclusion, we may suggest that there is no relation between the essential hypertension and C1562T polymorphism of MMP-9 gene; on the other hand C677T polymorphism (genotype TT) of MTHFR gene can be regarded as a genetic indicator for the development of essential hypertension.Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Japan (MEXT), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research (KAKENHI): 2450132

Frequency of angiotensin II type 1 receptor gene polymorphism in Turkish acute stroke patients

This study was performed in acute stroke patients in the Turkish population to determine the frequency of the A1166C polymorphism in the AT1 gene and to examine the role of this polymorphism in acute stroke development. In this study, 257 genomic DNA samples were analysed (from 206 acute stroke patients and 51 healthy individuals). Genomic DNA was prepared from peripheral blood using the salt-extraction method. The presence of the A1166C polymorphism in the AT1 gene was determined using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) method. PCR products were separated by 2% agarose gel electrophoresis and visualized by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. In this study, the allele frequency at the A1166C position was 92% A and 8% C for control and 97% A and 3% C for patients. This difference in allele frequency between the control group and the patient group was not statistically significant. However, genotype and allele frequencies showed a significant difference (P<0.001) in the control and the patient groups. The results of this study show no relationship between the A1166C polymorphism in the AT1 gene and acute stroke in the Turkish population

Pürbudak, Ayşegül ( Aksaray, Yazar )The aim of this research is to determine the learning styles of Web 2.0 based collaborative group activities; to examine the effects on academic achievement, online cooperative learning attitude level, computer thinking skill level. The research was carried out with a quantitative method and a pretest-posttest control group quasi-experimental design was used. Data were collected through Computational Thinking Skill Level scale, Online Cooperative Learning Attitude Scale and academic achievement test. The research was conducted for 10 weeks in the 2019-2020 academic year, within the scope of Information Technologies and Software course, with 83 6th grade students. The experimental group consists of 43 students and the control group consists of 40 students. In the research, one of the learning style theories, Kolb Learning Style model was used. In the experimental group, Web 2.0 based activities developed by the researcher were applied and the experimental group students produced content with Web 2.0 tools. In the control group, the lesson was taught in the way the current program suggested in schools. As a result, a meaningful difference was determined between students' academic achievement scores, online cooperative attitude levels, computer thinking levels and learning styles. According to these variables, the students with the discriminating learning style show the highest success. In addition, as a result of the research, it was determined that there are some features and developments other than the learning style feature in students. Learning environments other than the learning path of the learning style can be provided. Similar studies can be conducted by using the learning style inventory based on different theories

Connections between leadership features and attitudes towards innovativeness: a research on small and medium-sized business owners

Ertuğrul Ayrancı, Ayşegül (Arel Author), Ayrancı, Evren (Arel Author)The issue of leadership, with its roots from ancient times, is perhaps one of the most popular subjects in scientific terms as well as in daily life. Accordingly, this popularity has led to the creation of many leadership paradigms and types. A contemporary approach points out that innovativeness is one of the key elements in the modern business world and is also connected with leadership. This mentioned connection, however, has somehow a vague point: literature reveals two related claims. While some scholars contend that innovativeness should be a component of nearly all leadership types; some emphasize that a distinct type of leadership, innovation leadership, should primarily be taken into consideration. In this sense, this study aims to shed light upon leadership-innovativeness connection in the Turkish context by focusing on the entrepreneur – the business owner oneself. In accordance with this aim, data from small and medium-sized business owners in İstanbul Tuzla Organized Industrial Zone are collected and evaluated. A general result achieved is that business owners are keen on innovativeness and their perceptions of their own leadership features have partial connections with their innovativeness inclination
