    Range extension of the Atlantic herring Clupea harengus (Clupeiformes: Clupeidae) southern part of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean

    The atlantic herring Clupea harengus linnaeus, 1758 is a pelagic clupeid, schooling, plankton-feeding species that inhabits the coastal areas from inshore to well offshore waters, at depths to 200 m (Whitehead, 1986). This target species has been crucial for food security and economic development in northern europe (Martinez-Barrio et al., 2016). Its fishery currently ranks among the five largest fisheries in the world, with nearly 2 million tons of fish landed annually in the last years (Fao, 2010-2019). This species is distributed on both sides of the north atlantic ocean. In the western atlantic, it ranges from labrador to cape Hatteras; in the eastern atlantic, from the northern part of the Bay of Biscay to Greenland, and to the east into the Barents sea (Whitehead, 1985, 1986). In the northeastern atlantic, a large number of intraspecific groups (races, stocks, and populations) are distinguished by their spawning grounds and seasons, otolith morphology and meristic characters (Berg et al., 2017).En prensa0,40

    Exploring Deep-Sea Biodiversity in the Porcupine Bank (NE Atlantic) through Fish Integrative Taxonomy

    This study combined morphological and molecular approaches to the species assignment of several rare or poorly known deep-water fishes caught between 549 and 1371 m depth during a Spanish bottom trawl survey in the Porcupine Bank, west of Ireland. The following fish species were identified: Nessorhamphus ingolfianus (Schmidt, 1912), Borostomias antarcticus (Lönnberg 1905), Scopelosaurus lepidus (Krefft and Maul 1955), Bathypterois dubius Vaillant, 1888, Evermannella balbo (Risso, 1820), Antimora rostrata (Günther, 1878), Melanonus zugmayeri Norman, 1930, Lyconus brachycolus Holt and Byrne, 1906; Paraliparis hystrix Merrett, 1983, Neocyttus helgae (Holt and Byrne, 1908); Platyberyx opalescens Zugmayer, 1911; Howella atlantica Post and Quéro, 1991, Lycodes terraenovae Collett, 1896 and Pseudoscopelus altipinnis Parr, 1933. The presence of L. brachycolus, P. opalescens and P. altipinnis is reported for the first time in the Bank. The DNA barcoding results were largely consistent with morphological identification in 10 species but four did not fit the current taxonomy, indicating cases of potential cryptic speciation, misidentification, synonymy or recent diversification. Among them, the results strongly suggest that P. garmani and P. hystrix are conspecific, making P. hystrix a junior synonym of P. garmani.Versión del edito

    Dual energy imaging and intracycle motion correction for CT coronary angiography in patients with intermediate to high likelihood of coronary artery disease

    We explored whether intracycle motion correction algorithms (MCAs) might be applicable to dual energy computed tomography coronary angiography in patients with intermediate to high likelihood of coronary artery disease. MCA reconstructions were associated with higher interpretability rates (96.7% vs 87.9%, P < .001), image quality scores (4.12±0.9 vs. 3.76±1.0; P < .0001), and diagnostic performance [area under the curve of 0.95 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.92-0.97) vs 0.89 (95% CI 0.86-0.92); P < .0001] compared to conventional reconstructions. In conclusion, application of intracycle MCA reconstructions to dual energy computed tomography acquisitions was feasible and resulted in significantly higher image quality scores, interpretability, and diagnostic performance.Fil: Carrascosa, Patricia.     Geographic Range Expansion and Taxonomic Notes of the Shortfin Neoscopelid Neoscopelus cf. microchir (Myctophiformes: Neoscopelidae) in the North-Eastern Atlantic

    One specimen of the shortfin neoscopelid Neoscopelus microchir Matsubara, 1943, has been recorded for the first time on the Porcupine Bank, southwestern Ireland, providing a new northern limit of distribution for the eastern Atlantic. Morphometric and meristic parameters confirm the taxonomic identification. However, DNA barcoding shows deficiencies in current taxonomy and the potential occurrence of cryptic species. On this basis, the specimen is cautiously reported as Neosopelus cf. microchir pending a taxonomic revision of the genus.Versión del edito

    Enigmatic coloration pattern in greater weever Trachinus draco Linnaeus, 1758 and its biological significance

    A total of 58 specimens of Trachinus draco Linnaeus, 1758 were caught in Galician waters (Northwest Spain) and the Gulf of Cádiz (South Spain) between June and November 2020. Twenty-eight of them were males, showed a distinct dark patch located above the pectoral fin and below the lateral line on both sides of the body. Bibliographic and photographic data showed the same coloration pattern over time and throughout their range of distribution. A temporary nuptial coloration in males is proposed for the first time as the cause of this coloration.En prensa0,40

    Gaidropsarus gallaeciae (Gadiformes: Gaidropsaridae), a New Northeast Atlantic Rockling Fish, with Commentary on the Taxonomy of the Genus

    A new species of rockling fish genus Gaidropsarus is described based on six specimens collected in Galicia and Porcupine Banks, in Atlantic European waters. An analysis of morphological characters has confirmed the specific status of specimens of a previously described clade by comparison of DNA sequences. Gaidropsarus gallaeciae sp. nov. it is distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: 43–44 vertebrae; 54–60 third dorsal fin rays; 44–52 anal fin rays; 21–23 pectoral fin rays; head length 21.1–25.2% of standard length (SL); length of the pelvic fin 16.2–19% SL; length of the first dorsal fin ray 15.8–27% of head length (%HL); eye diameter 15.8–20.5% HL; and interorbital space 21.7–28% HL. Using the nucleotide sequence of the 5’ end of the mitochondrial COI gene as a molecular marker, the genetic p-distance between the new species and its congeners far exceeds the usual 2%, granting the former the status of an independent taxon, which is in accordance with the morphological identification. A comparison with the other 12 valid species of the genus is presented. The study also highlights the morphological diversity resulting from the meristic and biometric variability of Gaidropsarus species and lays the groundwork for future taxonomic studies on this genus.Versión del editor5,82

    Laser-induced fluorescence integrated in a microfluidic immunosensor for quantification of human serum IgG antibodies to Helicobacter pylori

    A portable immunosensor coupled to laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) detection system has been successfully developed. It was applied to the quantitative determination of specific IgG antibodies against Helicobacter pylori present in human serum samples. This system is a relevant alternative tool for the diagnostic of peptic ulcer and gastritis diseases produced by H. pylori, which are recognized risk factors for the development of gastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma. More than 50% of the population has been affected by H. pylori, one of the most widespread infections around the world. Our proposed system combines the LIF detection, which offers great sensibility with the specificity of the immunological reactions and the microfluidic technology. The device has a central channel (CC) with packed H. pylori antigen immobilized on 3-aminopropyl-modified controlled pore glass (AP-CPG). Antibodies in serum samples reacted immunologically with the immobilized antigen and then, they were determined using alkaline phosphatase (AP) enzyme-labeled second antibodies specific to human IgG. The 4-methylumbelliferyl phosphate (4-MUP), employed as enzymatic substrate, was converted to soluble fluorescent methylumbelliferone by AP, and this fluorescent product was finally quantified by LIF detection system. The calculated detection limits for LIF detection and the ELISA procedure were 0.17 and 2.1 U mL -1, respectively, and the within- and between-assay coefficients of variation were below 5.1%.Fil: Seia, Marco Abel.     Adenosine A2A Receptor Antagonists Affects NMDA Glutamate Receptor Function. Potential to Address Neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's Disease

N-methyl d-aspartate (NMDA) ionotropic glutamate receptor (NMDAR), which is one of the main targets to combat Alzheimer's disease (AD), is expressed in both neurons and glial cells. The aim of this paper was to assess whether the adenosine A2A receptor (A2AR), which is a target in neurodegeneration, may affect NMDAR functionality. (2) Methods. Immuno-histo/cytochemical, biophysical, biochemical and signaling assays were performed in a heterologous cell expression system and in primary cultures of neurons and microglia (resting and activated) from control and the APPSw,Ind transgenic mice. (3) Results. On the one hand, NMDA and A2A receptors were able to physically interact forming complexes, mainly in microglia. Furthermore, the amount of complexes was markedly enhanced in activated microglia. On the other hand, the interaction resulted in a novel functional entity that displayed a cross-antagonism, that could be useful to prevent the exacerbation of NMDAR function by using A2AR antagonists. Interestingly, the amount of complexes was markedly higher in the hippocampal cells from the APPSw,Ind than from the control mice. In neurons, the number of complexes was lesser, probably due to NMDAR not interacting with the A2AR. However, the activation of the A2AR receptors resulted in higher NMDAR functionality in neurons, probably by indirect mechanisms. (4) Conclusions. A2AR antagonists such as istradefylline, which is already approved for Parkinson's disease (Nouriast® in Japan and Nourianz® in the US), have potential to afford neuroprotection in AD in a synergistic-like fashion. i.e., via both neurons and microglia

    Its registers for the first time the presence of the African giant snail, Achatina fulica (Bowdich 1822) in Sincelejo city, department of Sucre, Caribbean coast of Colombia. The first invasion alert in the country was given by Corpoamazonia in August of 2010, for introduction of snails coming from Brazil. Then in the year 2011 was reported the occurrence in the departments of Arauca, Boyacá, Caquetá, Casanare, Guainía, Huila, Meta, Nariño, Putumayo, Santander, Tolima, Valle del Cauca and Vaupés. In the 2012 it was located in the department of Antioquia. This new discovery in the department of Sucre alerts because its presence in the Colombian Caribbean begins to be certain.Se registra por primera vez la presencia del caracol gigante africano, Achatina fulica (Bowdich 1822) en la ciudad de Sincelejo, departamento de Sucre, costa Caribe de Colombia.
