Equation of State of an Anyon Gas in a Strong Magnetic Field

The statistical mechanics of an anyon gas in a magnetic field is addressed. An harmonic regulator is used to define a proper thermodynamic limit. When the magnetic field is sufficiently strong, only exact NN-anyon groundstates, where anyons occupy the lowest Landau level, contribute to the equation of state. Particular attention is paid to the interval of definition of the statistical parameter α[1,0]\alpha\in[-1,0] where a gap exists. Interestingly enough, one finds that at the critical filling ν=1/α\nu=-{1/\alpha} where the pressure diverges, the external magnetic field is entirely screened by the flux tubes carried by the anyons.Comment: 14 pages, PACS numbers: 03.65.-w, 05.30.-d, 05.70.Ce, IPNO/TH 93-16 (MAY 1993), e-mail: OUVRY@FRCPN1

“Sick with worry...” Stories from the front-line of inequality, 2015

Contains some sobering stories of poverty and inequality in prosperous Australia, finding overwhelmingly that people do not experience poverty because they choose to but as a result of a range of structural causes which push them to the margins. Executive summary In late 2013, the St Vincent de Paul Society published research outlining some startling statistics about poverty in Australia today. Two Australias: A report on poverty in the land of plenty showed that 13 per cent of the population is living in poverty, 1.5 million people are unemployed or underemployed, the bottom fifth of households receive only 2.5 per cent of wages, and a quarter of us live with a long-term health condition or disability. The report concluded that, under Australia’s prosperous veneer, there is a significant group of people who are struggling just to survive.   Behind the numbers are the faces. Following from that quantitative survey, the St Vincent de Paul Society decided to conduct the present research because we wanted to hear the stories of those doing it toughest. Those for whom every day is a battle. Stories from the other Australia.   We sent out a call to our members and volunteers, and over 70 interviews were conducted around the country. When we read the stories, some key themes emerged. These themes will not be a surprise to anyone who is familiar with disadvantage in Australia today: there is a severe shortage of stable, affordable housing; incomes for many are not sufficient for a decent standard of living, and secure work is very hard to find; and Australians living with disability continue to face severe structural barriers to participation. Cutting across all three areas were several further issues: the stigma faced by those on the edge; the inherent insecurity that life entails for many in the other Australia; and the disproportionate impact of poverty on women.   However, what also shone through our research were three remarkable opportunities for change. First, supportive, rights-based services can and do help many people out of poverty. Secondly, people’s overwhelming love for their children presents a wonderful lens through which to see change happen. And, finally, what almost everyone desires above all else is to be able to participate.   Therefore, while it seems there are structural problems around housing, employment and disability that are systemically excluding people, the research shows that the way forward involves better service provision and harnessing people’s keen desire to contribute

The Role of Internalized Homonegativity in the Faith and Psychological Health of Lesbians

    Get PDF
Among lesbians, faith-based beliefs and behaviors may be associated with negative psychological health due to the interplay between religious and sexual identities. The present study examined health outcomes, faith-based beliefs (views of God as loving and controlling), faith-based behaviors (personal spiritual practices, religious activities), and internalized homonegativity in a sample of 225 self-identified lesbians. We hypothesized that internalized homonegativity would moderate the relationship between health outcomes and faith-based beliefs and behaviors among lesbians. Generally, results indicated that some faith-based beliefs and behaviors were related to negative health outcomes among lesbians with higher levels of internalized homonegativity, but among those with lower levels of internalized homonegativity, the negative associations with health were mitigated

Developing a Framework to Assess Financial Stability: Conference Highlights and Lessons

    Get PDF
Central banks are still defining their approach to financial stability and are at an early stage in the development of useful models. The Bank of Canada's 2007 economic conference was organized to stimulate progress in the development of financial-stability frameworks. Among the highlights reported here are the discussions centred around three proposed frameworks: a contingent-claims-analysis framework, a semi-structural framework, and structural financial-stability models. Participants also reported on their experiences with stress-testing under the International Monetary Fund's Financial Sector Assessment Program and discussed the implications for financial stability of linkages among payment, clearing, and settlement systems.

Complete phase diagram for the integrable chain with alternating spins in the sectors with competing interactions

    Get PDF
We investigate the anisotropic integrable spin chain consisting of spins s=1/2s={1/2} and s=1s=1 by means of thermodynamic Bethe ansatz for the anisotropy γ>π/3\gamma>\pi/3, where the analysis of the Takahashi conditions leads to a more complicated string picture. We give the phase diagram with respect to the two real coupling constants cˉ\bar{c} and c~\tilde{c}, which contains a new region where the ground state is formed by strings with infinite Fermi zones. In this region the velocities of sound for the two physical excitations have been calculated from the dressed energies. This leads to an additional line of conformal invariance not known before.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, uses ioplppt.sty and epsfig.sty, figure 3 correcte

The influence of infant irritability on maternal sensitivity in a sample of very premature infants

    Get PDF
The relationship between maternal sensitivity and infant irritability was investigated in a short-term longitudinal study of 29 very preterm infants. Infant irritability was assessed at term with the Brazelton NBAS, the Mother and Baby Scales (MABS) and the Crying Pattern Questionnaire (CPQ). Maternal sensitivity was assessed by nurses' ratings in the neonatal care unit and at three months during motherinfant interaction observation. Cross-lagged panel analysis indicated that neonatal irritability did not influence sensitivity at 3 months nor did maternal sensitivity in the newborn period lead to reduced irritability at 3 months. Both irritability and maternal sensitivity showed moderate stability over time (r=.55 and r=.60, respectively). It is concluded that in early infancy maternal sensitivity shows little influence on infant irritability in very preterm infants

Generative Roles: Assessing Sustained Involvement in Generativity

    Get PDF
Abstract Generative roles refer to observable, behavioral community positions that embody aspects of teaching and nurturing that are central to the concept of generativity. Two studies are presented that describe generative roles in a community sample and provide psychometric data for a short index of generative roles. The first study also provides reliability and validity data from a second informant. The second study examines generative roles at different stages of adolescence and adulthood. Participants were asked 8 yes/no questions about a variety of community roles. The validity of the GRI was supported by significant correlations with the Loyola Generativity Scale, a widely used measure of generative concern (r=.33), and measures of related constructs. The correlations were similar across age categories. The Generative Roles Index has good psychometric qualities and complements existing measures of generativity by providing behavioral, observable data on roles

Dispersion relations and speeds of sound in special sectors for the integrable chain with alternating spins

Based on our previous analysis \cite{doerfel3} of the anisotropic integrable chain consisting of spins s=1/2s=1/2 and s=1s=1 we compare the dispersion relations for the sectors with infinite Fermi zones. Further we calculate the speeds of sound for regions close to sector borders, where the Fermi radii either vanish or diverge, and compare the results.Comment: 11 pages, LaTeX2e, uses iopart.cls,graphicx.sty and psfrag.sty, 2 figure

A comprehensive study on the microstructure and mechanical properties of arc girth welded joints of spiral welded high strength API X70 steel pipe

    Get PDF
In the paper, the effect of welding technology on the microstructure and mechanical properties of girth welded joints was presented. Metallographic examinations based on light microscopy and SEM were conducted on girth welded joints of API X70 steel pipe. Research has shown that microstructure of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of MMA girth welded joints is not homogeneous and depends on the thermal history of each area during the welding process. Near the fusion line the zone is coarse, and further away there is a fine-grained zone. In the area of root passes the microstructure consists of recrystallized ferrite grains unlike to cap passes where the fine bainitic microstructure can be observed. In the case of MAG girth welded joints, the weld microstructure consists of primary austenite grains. The primary austenite boundaries serve as nucleation sites of ferrite. The microstructure of the HAZ varies continuously from a coarse—to fine-grained microstructure of the base material. The results of mechanical properties of girth welded joints are also presented. The hardness and strength of arc welded joints depend on welding filler materials as well as welding technology. The results of hardness distribution of MMA and MAG girth welded joints confirmed the results of microstructural evaluation
