Simultaneous MAP estimation of inhomogeneity and segmentation of brain tissues from MR images
Intrascan and interscan intensity inhomogeneities have been identified as a common source of making many advanced segmentation techniques fail to produce satisfactory results in separating brains tissues from multi-spectral magnetic resonance (MR) images. A common solution is to correct the inhomogeneity before applying the segmentation techniques. This paper presents a method that is able to achieve simultaneous semi-supervised MAP (maximum a-posterior probability) estimation of the inhomogeneity field and segmentation of brain tissues, where the inhomogeneity is parameterized. Our method can incorporate any available incomplete training data and their contribution can be controlled in a flexible manner and therefore the segmentation of the brain tissues can be optimised. Experiments on both simulated and real MR images have demonstrated that the proposed method estimated the inhomogeneity field accurately and improved the segmentation
Hadronic Spectral Functions in Lattice QCD
QCD spectral functions of hadrons in the pseudo-scalar and vector channels
are extracted from lattice Monte Carlo data of the imaginary time Green's
functions. The maximum entropy method works well for this purpose, and the
resonance and continuum structures in the spectra are obtained in addition to

Phonon-like and single particle dynamics in liquid lithium
The dynamic structure factor, S(Q,E), of liquid lithium (T=475 K) has been
determined by inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) in the momentum transfer region
(Q = 1.4-110 nm-1). These data allow to observe how, in a simple liquid, a
phonon-like collective mode evolves towards the single particle dynamics. As a
function of Q, one finds: i) at low Q's, a sound mode with a positive
dispersion of the sound velocity, ii) at intermediate Q's, excitations whose
energy oscillates similarly to phonons in the crystal Brillouin zones, and iii)
at high Q's, the S(Q,E) approaches a Gaussian shape, indicating that the single
particle dynamics has been reached.Comment: 3 pages and 5 figure
An efficient scheme for numerical simulations of the spin-bath decoherence
We demonstrate that the Chebyshev expansion method is a very efficient
numerical tool for studying spin-bath decoherence of quantum systems. We
consider two typical problems arising in studying decoherence of quantum
systems consisting of few coupled spins: (i) determining the pointer states of
the system, and (ii) determining the temporal decay of quantum oscillations. As
our results demonstrate, for determining the pointer states, the
Chebyshev-based scheme is at least a factor of 8 faster than existing
algorithms based on the Suzuki-Trotter decomposition. For the problems of
second type, the Chebyshev-based approach has been 3--4 times faster than the
Suzuki-Trotter-based schemes. This conclusion holds qualitatively for a wide
spectrum of systems, with different spin baths and different Hamiltonians.Comment: 8 pages (RevTeX), 3 EPS figure
Maternal deaths in Pakistan : intersection of gender, class and social exclusion.
Background: A key aim of countries with high maternal mortality rates is to increase availability of competent
maternal health care during pregnancy and childbirth. Yet, despite significant investment, countries with the
highest burdens have not reduced their rates to the expected levels. We argue, taking Pakistan as a case study,
that improving physical availability of services is necessary but not sufficient for reducing maternal mortality
because gender inequities interact with caste and poverty to socially exclude certain groups of women from
health services that are otherwise physically available.
Methods: Using a critical ethnographic approach, two case studies of women who died during childbirth were
pieced together from information gathered during the first six months of fieldwork in a village in Northern Punjab,
Pakistan.
Findings: Shida did not receive the necessary medical care because her heavily indebted family could not afford it.
Zainab, a victim of domestic violence, did not receive any medical care because her martial family could not afford
it, nor did they think she deserved it. Both women belonged to lower caste households, which are materially poor
households and socially constructed as inferior.
Conclusions: The stories of Shida and Zainab illustrate how a rigidly structured caste hierarchy, the gendered
devaluing of females, and the reinforced lack of control that many impoverished women experience conspire to
keep women from lifesaving health services that are physically available and should be at their disposal
Designing citizen science tools for learning: lessons learnt from the iterative development of nQuire
This paper reports on a 4-year research and development case study about the design of citizen science tools for inquiry learning. It details the process of iterative pedagogy-led design and evaluation of the nQuire toolkit, a set of web-based and mobile tools scaffolding the creation of online citizen science investigations. The design involved an expert review of inquiry learning and citizen science, combined with user experience studies involving more than 200 users. These have informed a concept that we have termed ‘citizen inquiry’, which engages members of the public alongside scientists in setting up, running, managing or contributing to citizen science projects with a main aim of learning about the scientific method through doing science by interaction with others. A design-based research (DBR) methodology was adopted for the iterative design and evaluation of citizen science tools. DBR was focused on the refinement of a central concept, ‘citizen inquiry’, by exploring how it can be instantiated in educational technologies and interventions. The empirical evaluation and iteration of technologies involved three design experiments with end users, user interviews, and insights from pedagogy and user experience experts. Evidence from the iterative development of nQuire led to the production of a set of interaction design principles that aim to guide the development of online, learning-centred, citizen science projects. Eight design guidelines are proposed: users as producers of knowledge, topics before tools, mobile affordances, scaffolds to the process of scientific inquiry, learning by doing as key message, being part of a community as key message, every visit brings a reward, and value users and their time
Presymptomatic risk assessment for chronic non-communicable diseases
The prevalence of common chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs) far
overshadows the prevalence of both monogenic and infectious diseases combined.
All CNCDs, also called complex genetic diseases, have a heritable genetic
component that can be used for pre-symptomatic risk assessment. Common single
nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that tag risk haplotypes across the genome
currently account for a non-trivial portion of the germ-line genetic risk and
we will likely continue to identify the remaining missing heritability in the
form of rare variants, copy number variants and epigenetic modifications. Here,
we describe a novel measure for calculating the lifetime risk of a disease,
called the genetic composite index (GCI), and demonstrate its predictive value
as a clinical classifier. The GCI only considers summary statistics of the
effects of genetic variation and hence does not require the results of
large-scale studies simultaneously assessing multiple risk factors. Combining
GCI scores with environmental risk information provides an additional tool for
clinical decision-making. The GCI can be populated with heritable risk
information of any type, and thus represents a framework for CNCD
pre-symptomatic risk assessment that can be populated as additional risk
