Electronic structure of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe from first principles
The superconductor UCoGe is analyzed with electronic structure calculations
using Linearized Augmented Plane Wave method based on Density Functional
Theory. Ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic calculations with and without
correlations (via LDA+U) were done. In this compound the Fermi level is
situated in a region where the main contribution to DOS comes from the U-5f
orbital. The magnetic moment is mainly due to the Co-3d orbital with a small
contribution from the U-5f orbital. The possibility of fully non-collinear
magnetism in this compound seems to be ruled out. These results are compared
with the isostructural compound URhGe, in this case the magnetism comes mostly
from the U-5f orbital
Stellar Populations and Star Cluster Formation in Interacting Galaxies with the Advanced Camera for Surveys
Pixel-by-pixel colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams - based on a
subset of the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys Early Release
Observations - provide a powerful technique to explore and deduce the star and
star cluster formation histories of the Mice and the Tadpole interacting
galaxies. In each interacting system we find some 40 bright young star clusters
(20 <= F606W (mag) <= 25, with a characteristic mass of ~3 x 10^6 Msun), which
are spatially coincident with blue regions of active star formation in their
tidal tails and spiral arms. We estimate that the main events triggering the
formation of these clusters occurred ~(1.5-2.0) x 10^8 yr ago. We show that
star cluster formation is a major mode of star formation in galaxy
interactions, with >= 35% of the active star formation in encounters occurring
in star clusters. This is the first time that young star clusters have been
detected along the tidal tails in interacting galaxies. The tidal tail of the
Tadpole system is dominated by blue star forming regions, which occupy some 60%
of the total area covered by the tail and contribute ~70% of the total flux in
the F475W filter (decreasing to ~40% in F814W). The remaining pixels in the
tail have colours consistent with those of the main disk. The tidally triggered
burst of star formation in the Mice is of similar strength in both interacting
galaxies, but it has affected only relatively small, spatially coherent areas.Comment: 23 pages in preprint form, 6 (encapsulated) postscript figures;

The loss of anisotropy in MgB2 with Sc substitution and its relationship with the critical temperature
The electrical conductivity anisotropy of the sigma-bands is calculated for
the (Mg,Sc)B2 system using a virtual crystal model. Our results reveal that
anisotropy drops with relatively little scandium content (< 30%); this
behaviour coincides with the lowering of Tc and the reduction of the Kohn
anomaly. This anisotropy loss is also found in the Al and C doped systems. In
this work it is argued that the anisotropy, or 2D character, of the sigma-bands
is an important parameter for the understanding of the high Tc found in MgB2

Globally Guided Trajectory Planning in Dynamic Environments
Navigating mobile robots through environments shared with humans is
challenging. From the perspective of the robot, humans are dynamic obstacles
that must be avoided. These obstacles make the collision-free space nonconvex,
which leads to two distinct passing behaviors per obstacle (passing left or
right). For local planners, such as receding-horizon trajectory optimization,
each behavior presents a local optimum in which the planner can get stuck. This
may result in slow or unsafe motion even when a better plan exists. In this
work, we identify trajectories for multiple locally optimal driving behaviors,
by considering their topology. This identification is made consistent over
successive iterations by propagating the topology information. The most
suitable high-level trajectory guides a local optimization-based planner,
resulting in fast and safe motion plans. We validate the proposed planner on a

Caracterización de la variabilidad climática en la Cordillera de los Andes necesita un de un análisis especial debido a que en esto región, la precipitación y temperatura ser extremadamente variables tanto a escala espacial como en escala temporal. En este artículo se examina las anomalías de datos mensuales de precipitación y temperatura media observada en 25 y 16 estaciones respectivamente, que datan desde inicios de 1960 hasta 1990, y los compara versus las anomalías de diferentes influencias climáticas externas de la región en bloques de periodos anuales y trimestrales. Las estaciones están ubicadas en la cuenca del Río Paute en el sur de los andes ecuatorianos. Las estaciones se encuentran en un rango de elevación entre 1800 y 4200 m s.n.m. y principalmente están afectados por influencias climáticas externas correspondientes al Pacifico tropical, la Amazonía y el Atlántico tropical. Los resultados muestran variaciones de temperatura homogéneas en toda la región, las mismas que están altamente influenciadas por el ENSO (El Nino South Oscillation) especialmente durante el trimestre Diciembre-Enero-Febrero. Durante Junio-Julio-Agosto, la correlación es menor, mostrando posibles influencias de otros factores climáticos. Se encontró valores altos y significativos de anomalías en temperatura en sitios de alta elevación, mientras que en los valles interandinos las anomalías son menores y de menor grado significativo. Los valores altos y significativos de anomalías en precipitación fueron encontrados en los sitios ubicados en la región oriental de la cuenca.Characterization of climate variability in the Andes mountain range needs special assessment as rainfall and temperature are extremely variable in space and time. This paper examines the anomalies of observed month rainfall and temperature data of respectively 25 and 16 stations, from the early 1960‟s to the 1990‟s and compare them against anomalies from different external climate influences in annual and 3-month seasonal block periods. The stations are located in the Río Paute Basin in the Ecuador‟s southern Andes. All stations are within the elevation band 1800 and 4200 m a.s.l. and affected by the Tropical Pacific, Amazon and Tropical Atlantic climate. The results show similar temperature variations for the entire region, which are highly influenced by the ENSO, especially during the DJF season. During JJA, the correlation is weaker showing the influence of other climate factors. Higher temperature anomalies are found at the high elevation sites while in deep valleys the anomalies are less significant. Rainfall variations depend, in addition to elevation, on additional factors such as the aspect orientation, slope and hydrological regime. Influence of carbon on intraband scattering in Mg(B1-xCx)2
We report data on the Hall coefficient (RH) of the carbon substituted
Mg(B1-xCx)2 single crystals with x in the range from 0 to 0.1. The temperature
dependences of RH obtained for the substituted crystals differ systematically
at low temperatures, but all of them converge to the value of 1.8 x 10^-10
m^3/C at room temperature. The RH(T) data together with results of the
thermoelectric power and electrical resistivity measurements are interpreted
within a quasi-classical transport approach, where the presence of four
different conducting sheets is considered. The main influence of the carbon
substitution on the transport properties in the normal state is associated with
enhanced scattering rates, rather than modified concentration of charge
carriers. Presumably the carbon substitution increases the electron-impurity
scattering mainly in the pi band.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure

Tumor dissociation of highly viable cell suspensions for single-cell omic analyses in mouse models of breast cancer.
Cell preparation with a high rate of viable cells is required to obtain reliable single-cell transcriptomic and epigenomic data. This protocol describes a technique for digestion and single-cell isolation from mouse mammary tumors to achieve ∼90% of viable cells, which can be subsequently processed in a diverse array of high-throughput single-cell "omic platforms," both in an unbiased manner or after selection of a specific cell population. Childhood conditions influence adult progesterone levels
Background Average profiles of salivary progesterone in women vary significantly at the inter- and intrapopulation level as a function of age and acute energetic conditions related to energy intake, energy expenditure, or a combination of both. In addition to acute stressors, baseline progesterone levels differ among populations. The causes of such chronic differences are not well understood, but it has been hypothesised that they may result from varying tempos of growth and maturation and, by implication, from diverse environmental conditions encountered during childhood and adolescence. Methods and Findings To test this hypothesis, we conducted a migrant study among first- and second-generation Bangladeshi women aged 19–39 who migrated to London, UK at different points in the life-course, women still resident in Bangladesh, and women of European descent living in neighbourhoods similar to those of the migrants in London (total n = 227). Data collected included saliva samples for radioimmunoassay of progesterone, anthropometrics, and information from questionnaires on diet, lifestyle, and health. Results from multiple linear regression, controlled for anthropometric and reproductive variables, show that women who spend their childhood in conditions of low energy expenditure, stable energy intake, good sanitation, low immune challenges, and good health care in the UK have up to 103% higher levels of salivary progesterone and an earlier maturation than women who develop in less optimal conditions in Sylhet, Bangladesh (F9,178 = 5.05, p < 0.001, standard error of the mean = 0.32; adjusted R2 = 0.16). Our results point to the period prior to puberty as a sensitive phase when changes in environmental conditions positively impact developmental tempos such as menarcheal age (F2,81 = 3.21, p = 0.03) and patterns of ovarian function as measured using salivary progesterone (F2,81 = 3.14, p = 0.04). Conclusions This research demonstrates that human females use an extended period of the life cycle prior to reproductive maturation to monitor their environment and to modulate reproductive steroid levels in accordance with projected conditions they might encounter as adults. Given the prolonged investment of human pregnancy and lactation, such plasticity (extending beyond any intrauterine programming) enables a more flexible and finely tuned adjustment to the potential constraints or opportunities of the later adult environment.
