The KongoKing project: 2012 fieldwork report from the lower Congo province (DRC)

    Get PDF
In order to understand the origins of the Kongo kingdom, the KongoKing research group conducted a first survey in the area usually regarded as the former kingdom’s provincial capital sites of Mbanza Nsundi and Mbanza Mbata in the Lower Congo Province of the DRC during the summer of 2012. Several test excavations and radiocarbon dates are starting to shed some light on the last five centuries in the area

Tippo Tip à Mulongo. Nouvelles données sur le début de la pénétration arabo-swahili au Sahara

The tribal lands of the Luba of Mulongo, situated at the extreme north of the Upemba depression are not only an almost obligatory point of passage for those coming from the east en route to the heart of the Luba but are also an important market. It is therefore a very useful place to study the Arab-Swahili penetration in the kingdom of Luba in the nineteenth century, especially as one of the first merchants to reach this chefferie was none other than Tippo Tip. In his autobiography, he briefly speaks of his incursions in Luba but up to now, no other source has permitted the verification or the completion of the information provided by Tippo Tip.An unpublished administrative report dating from 1909, written up from the oral tradition of the precedent century, tells of power struggles between two rival lineages of the Mulongo royalty. The report not only provides a complete ancestry of the chiefs but also allows the accurate dating of the stages of Arab-Swahili penetration in the kingdom of Luba. Furthermore, this document refers to the passage of Tippo Tip in the region and gives us much information regarding the events that took place during his stay. The congruence of the sources enables a relatively detailed chronology of the passage of Tippo Tip to be established and a better definition of the forms of the penetration and the political domination of Arab-Swahili at the heart of the Luba empire

L’histoire du royaume Kongo revisitée par l’archéologie

    Get PDF

The Comprehensive Health Information System: a Platform for Privacy-Aware and Social Health Monitoring

    No full text
International audienceRapid ageing of world population makes the traditional hospitalization therapy more and more expensive, new forms of medical care are hence required. At the same time, the medical community perceives the availability of vital data as an essential prerequisite to acquire objective information about patients. Finally, the patients themselves show willingness to provide such data, in order for their health conditions to be regularly monitored. This paper presents the last developments of the Comprehensive Health Information System (CHISel'd), a platform for continuous health monitoring whose main goal is to show how information technologies can be exploited to provide a feasible alternative to the traditional hospitalization therapy. Remarkable features of CHISel'd are its capability to process patient data according to a dynamically evolving set of data mining techniques and to share them among stakeholders (doctors, researchers, friends...) according to patient-defined access policies and in the frame of e-communities. These features enable CHISel'd to address the needs perceived by patients and the medical community

Strain analysis is superior to wall thickening in discriminating between infarcted myocardium with and without microvascular obstruction

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic performances of strain and wall thickening analysis in discriminating among three types of myocardium after acute myocardial infarction: non-infarcted myocardium, infarcted myocardium without microvascular obstruction (MVO) and infarcted myocardium with MVO. Methods: Seventy-one patients with a successfully treated ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction underwent cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging at 2-6 days after reperfusion. The imaging protocol included conventional cine imaging, myocardial tissue tagging and late gadolinium enhancement. Regional circumferential and radial strain and associated strain rates were analyzed in a 16-segment model as were the absolute and relative wall thickening. Results: Hyperenhancement was detected in 418 (38%) of 1096 segments and was accompanied by MVO in 145 (35%) of hyperenhanced segments. Wall thickening, circumferential and radial strain were all significantly diminished in segments with hyperenhancement and decreased even further if MVO was also present (all p < 0.001). Peak circumferential strain (CS) surpassed all other strain and wall thickening parameters in its ability to discriminate between hyperenhanced and non-enhanced myocardium (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, CS was superior to both absolute and relative wall thickening in differentiating infarcted segments with MVO from infarcted segments without MVO (p = 0.02 and p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: Strain analysis is superior to wall thickening in differentiating between non-infarcted myocardium, infarcted myocardium without MVO and
