The conduction pathway of potassium channels is water free under physiological conditions.

Ion conduction through potassium channels is a fundamental process of life. On the basis of crystallographic data, it was originally proposed that potassium ions and water molecules are transported through the selectivity filter in an alternating arrangement, suggesting a "water-mediated" knock-on mechanism. Later on, this view was challenged by results from molecular dynamics simulations that revealed a "direct" knock-on mechanism where ions are in direct contact. Using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques tailored to characterize the interaction between water molecules and the ion channel, we show here that the selectivity filter of a potassium channel is free of water under physiological conditions. Our results are fully consistent with the direct knock-on mechanism of ion conduction but contradict the previously proposed water-mediated knock-on mechanism

De risico's van geneesmiddelen in het aquatisch milieu

In een literatuurstudie zijn de effecten en risico’s van een vijftal humane geneesmiddelen op het aquatisch milieu onderzocht. Het gaat om geneesmiddelen die frequent in Nederlandse oppervlaktewateren zijn gedetecteerd: carbamazepine, diclofenac, erytromycine, metoprolol en sulfamethoxazol. Vier van deze vijf geneesmiddelen vormen een risico voor het aquatisch milieu. Het Europese Parlement probeert risicovolle geneesmiddelen op de prioritaire stoffenlijst van de Kaderrichtlijn Water te krijgen. Hierdoor zal de farmaceutische industrie gestimuleerd worden om geneesmiddelen milieuvriendelijker te maken. Tevens zullen overheden en andere partijen aangespoord worden om maatregelen voor afvalwaterzuivering en verantwoord geneesmiddelgebruik te ontwikkele

Stabilized hot electron bolometer heterodyne receiver at 2.5 THz

We report on a method to stabilize a hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixer at 2.5 THz. The technique utilizes feedback control of the local oscillator (LO) laser power by means of a swing-arm actuator placed in the optical beam path. We demonstrate that this technique yields a factor of 50 improvement in the spectroscopic Allan variance time which is shown to be over 30 s in a 12 MHz noise fluctuation bandwidth. Furthermore, broadband signal direct detection effects may be minimized by this technique. The technique is versatile and can be applied to practically any local oscillator at any frequency

В статье сделан лексико-семантический анализ названий на обозначение инфекционных кишечных заболеваний, зафиксированных в говорах Кировоградской области. В этой тематической группе выделены семемы, выявлен количественный состав репрезентантов семем. Выявлены ареалы распространения лексических и фразеологических единиц. Проанализированы общность и различие семантического значения собранного материала и литературного языка.У статті проведено лексико-семантичний аналіз назв на позначення інфекційних кишкових хвороб, зафіксованих у говірках Кіровоградщини. У зазначеній тематичній групі виокремлено семеми, виявлено кількісний склад репрезентантів семем. Визначено ареали поширення лексичних і фразеологічних одиниць. Проаналізовано спільність і відмінність семантичного значення зібраного матеріалу і літературної мови.The lexico-semantic analysis of the names of the skin infectious diseases fixed in the Kirovohrad dialects is carried out in the article under consideration.
