    Magnetic Properties of a Quantum Ferrimagnet: NiCu(pba)(D_2O)_3 . 2D_2O

    We report the results of magnetic measurements on a powder sample of NiCu(pba)(D_2O)_3 \cdot 2D_2O(pba=1,3propylenebis(oxamato))whichisoneoftheprototypicalexamplesofan (pba=1,3-propylenebis(oxamato)) which is one of the prototypical examples of an S=1/2and1ferrimagneticchain.Susceptibility(=1/2 and 1 ferrimagnetic chain. Susceptibility(\chi)showsamonotonousincreasewithdecreasingtemperature(T)andreachesamaximumatabout7K.Intheplotof) shows a monotonous increase with decreasing temperature (T) and reaches a maximum at about 7 K. In the plot of \chi Tversus versus T,theexperimentaldataexhibitabroadminimumandarefittothe, the experimental data exhibit a broad minimum and are fit to the \chi TcurvecalculatedfortheferrimagneticHeisenbergchaincomposedofS=1/2and1.Fromthisfit,wehaveevaluatedthenearestneighborexchangeconstant curve calculated for the ferrimagnetic Heisenberg chain composed of S=1/2 and 1. From this fit, we have evaluated the nearest-neighbor exchange constant J/k_B=121 K,thegvaluesofNi, the g-values of Ni^{2+}andCu and Cu^{2+},, g_{Ni}=2.22and=2.22 and g_{Cu}=2.09,respectively.Appliedexternalfielddependenceof=2.09, respectively.     Magnetic properties of the spin-1 chain compound NiCl3_3C6_6H5_5CH2_2CH2_2NH3_3

    We report experimental results of the static magnetization, ESR and NMR spectroscopic measurements of the Ni-hybrid compound NiCl3_3C6_6H5_5CH2_2CH2_2NH3_3. In this material NiCl3_3 octahedra are structurally arranged in chains along the crystallographic aa-axis. According to the static susceptibility and ESR data Ni2+^{2+} spins S=1S = 1 are isotropic and are coupled antiferromagnetically (AFM) along the chain with the exchange constant J=25.5J = 25.5 K. These are important prerequisites for the realization of the so-called Haldane spin-1 chain with the spin-singlet ground state and a quantum spin gap. However, experimental results evidence AFM order at TN10T_{\rm N} \approx 10 K presumably due to small interchain couplings. Interestingly, frequency-, magnetic field-, and temperature-dependent ESR measurements, as well as the NMR data, reveal signatures which could presumably indicate an inhomogeneous ground state of co-existent mesoscopically spatially separated AFM ordered and spin-singlet state regions similar to the situation observed before in some spin-diluted Haldane magnets

    New quantum phase transitions in the two-dimensional J1-J2 model

    We analyze the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the J1-J2 model, in two dimensions. Two quantum phase transitions in the model are already known: the second order transition from the Neel state to the spin liquid state at (J_2/J_1)_{c2}=0.38, and the first order transition from the spin liquid state to the collinear state at (J_2/J_1)_{c4}=0.60. We have found evidence for two new second order phase transitions: the transition from the spin columnar dimerized state to the state with plaquette type modulation at (J_2/J_1)_{c3}=0.50(2), and the transition from the simple Neel state to the Neel state with spin columnar dimerization at (J_2/J_1)_{c1}=0.34(4).     Shortage of organs has made a global interest for donation after circulatory death (DCD) to re-emerge. While controlled DCD (cDCD) has been progressively increasing, uncontrolled DCD (uDCD) has only been developed in a few settings.1 This activity is quantitatively important in France and Spain, although it has also been reported in other European countries, as Austria, Belgium, Italy, the Netherlands, and recently in Russia.2,3 uDCD protocols have allowed the transplantation of a significant number of kidneys, livers and lungs at these countries.3 Excellent graft survival has been reported in kidney transplantation from uDCD, in spite of an increased incidence of delayed graft function (DGF).4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,1516 Albeit promising, results with liver transplants obtained in uDCD protocols do not consistently provide similar outcomes compared with livers from donors after brain death (DBD), mainly due to a higher incidence of primary graft dysfunction and non-function and biliary complications.17,18,19,20,21,22 Lung transplantation is still facing limited experience, but preliminary results are encouraging.pre-print938 K

    The Importance of PRI Therapy for the Pastoral Counsellor

    It is not always easy for pastoral counsellors to help people change. Often people have become stuck in their ways. Recent developments in the field of brain research help explain why change is difficult. This article discusses Past Reality Integration Therapy (PRI), a psychotherapeutic method that integrates recent findings of brain research and offers an important addition to the work of (pastoral) counsellors and psychotherapists. The use of this approach with Dutch students in their pastoral training is presented. Furthermore the importance of this new method for counsellors themselves, their clients and their work is discussed and some overall conclusions about the method and its practical application are presented
