In Malaysia, the main trigger factor of a landslide is rainfall. Most of the occurrences landslide cases in Malaysia, happen during rainfall. Therefore, it is important to identify those landslide area to minimize the destruction cause by landslide. By developing landslide hazard map could potentially minimize the destruction. This research was conducted on Murum reservoir of Murum River, which is in the uppermost part of the Rajang River basin for the Landslide Hazard Assessment (LHA). Therefore, Kriging interpolation method was used in Geographical Information System (GIS) with rainfall information obtained from rainfall station gauge

Tun Mustapha Park, in Sabah, Malaysia, was gazetted in May 2016 and is the first multiple-use park in Malaysia where conservation, sustainable resource use and development co-occur within one management framework. We applied a systematic conservation planning tool, Marxan with Zones, and stakeholder consultation to design and revise the draft zoning plan. This process was facilitated by Sabah Parks, a government agency, and WWF-Malaysia, under the guidance of the Tun Mustapha Park steering committee and with support from the University of Queensland. Four conservation and fishing zones, including no-take areas, were developed, each with representation and replication targets for key marine habitats, and a range of socio-economic and community objectives. Here we report on how decision-support tools informed the reserve design process in three planning stages: prioritization, government review, and community consultation. Using marine habitat and species representation as a reporting metric, we describe how the zoning plan changed at each stage of the design process. We found that the changes made to the zoning plan by the government and stakeholders resulted in plans that compromised the achievement of conservation targets because no-take areas were moved away from villages and the coastline, where unique habitats are located. The design process highlights a number of lessons learned for future conservation zoning, which we believe will be useful as many other places embark on similar zoning processes on land and in the sea

Due to high production of palm oil, surplus quantities of palm oil wastes such as empty fruit bunches (EFB) and palm kernel shells (PKS) are generated. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of EFB and PKS ashes and their respective bio-silica content when combusted at different temperatures; 400°C, 600°C and 800°C. Several tests like weight loss, colour and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis are conducted. EFB records higher weight loss compared to PKS for all combustion temperatures, thus implying less silica content compared to the later. Both wastes also show the highest weight loss at 99.20% and 98.51% respectively, when they are burnt at 800°C than those combusted at lower temperatures. This happens because more impurities evaporate at 800°C, thus resulting in greater relative amount of silica in the ash. Colour analysis shows that the whiteness of both EFB and PKS ashes are the highest when combustion occurs completely at 800°C, particularly at 71.56 and 42.40 respectively. Besides, FTIR analysis depicts distinct presence of Si-O and Si-O-Si functional groups in both EFB and PKS ashes for all temperatures. It is als

Introduction: Attributable to antimicrobial and cytotoxic properties of nanoparticles, their use is believed to be able to combat antimicrobial resistance and chemoresistance. In synthesizing nanoparticles, green synthesis method is widely studied because it is environmental-friendly due to use of biological agents as reducing and stabilising agents. Psychotria malayana Jack is rich with phytochemicals possessing many potential bioactivities. Thus, this study aims to extract phytochemicals from leaves of P. malayana Jack and to biogenically synthesise silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-PM) using the extract. Methods: The leaves of P. malayana Jack was extracted in methanol-water solvent via ultrasound assisted extraction and it was incubated in silver nitrate solution for 24 hours. The formation of AgNPs-PM was confirmed via UV-Visible, scanning electron microscopy, zeta particle size and zeta potential analysis. The synthesized AgNPs-PM were tested for their cytotoxicity on human colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (CaCO-2) and human epithelial breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7) via 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) colorimetric assay. For antimicrobial activity, they were tested on Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus using disc diffusion method. Results: AgNPs-PM were successfully synthesized using P. malayana Jack extract as reducing and stabilising agents. Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analysis showed that flavonoids, amino acids and heterocyclic compounds are among phytochemicals of P. malayana Jack that are responsible for the reducing and stabilizing of AgNPs-PM. At concentrations ranging from 12.5 µg/ml to 400 µg/ml of AgNPs-PM, the percentage inhibition of cancer cells was insignificant, whereas 2 mg/ml AgNPs-PM tested on the microbial strains showed inhibition on their growth. Conclusion: AgNPs-PM has been successfully synthetised and characterised. However, the AgNPs possesses low bioactivities against bacterial and cytotoxic activities
