Photo: The Star/Faihan Ghani“We also needed to approach the cleaning process delicately to highlight the intricacy of this weavingtechnique and the historical insights it offers,” she added.Here are five exhibition highlights:Kek TenunAt the museum, visitors are first greeted by a traditional wooden weaving tool called the “KekMelayu,” used by weavers to create limar. This tool features four pillars resembling a house frame.“The weaver sits behind the kek and uses the ‘kayu pesa’ to wind the woven fabric in front of him,”explained Zahirah, demonstrating the threading position.She also notes that limar employs the “tie and dye” technique, where the thread is dyed beforeweaving. This showcases the incredible diligence and craftsmanship needed for a singlepiece of limar cloth,” she adds, impressed by their persistence.She invites the public to join upcoming workshops and talks at the museum, where specialists willdemonstrate the use of this tool in further detail.A gallery tour (register here) is set to take place on June 22 at 2.30pm.A status symbolMuch like their European counterparts, old world Malay society assessed social status by the materialsused in clothing, whether silk, songket, or the presence of limar.“This Malay woven textile is divided into two structures: kain lepas (unsewn fabric) and kain sarung(sewn fabric). She also noted that motifs oftenreflect local surroundings; for instance, textiles near jetties feature waves and sampans.Aesthetically, ‘Kesumba red’ (dark red or maroon) is the most popular colour in the museum’scollection, frequently used on the “punca kain,” or body of the limar textile.Limar accessoriesThe museum is also showcasing a range of accessories commonly worn with limar textiles, typicallyowned by royalty and nobles. Universiti Malaya has climbed five spots in the QS World University Ranking rankings, securing 60th position. KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) melonjakkan kedudukannya ke tangga 60 untuk beradadalam kelompok 100 universiti terbaik dunia yang disenarai oleh Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) WorldUniversity Rankings 2025.Tahun lalu, UM menduduki tangga ke-65 dan peningkatan ketara itu disebabkan oleh penunjuk HasilPekerjaan dan peningkatan dalam nisbah fakulti serta pelajar antarabangsa.Berdasarkan laporan berkenaan, Malaysia mempunyai 28 institusi pengajian tinggi yang berada dalamkedudukan berperingkat, dengan 14 daripadanya sedang berusaha meningkatkan kedudukannya, lapankekal stabil dan enam lagi berada pada kedudukan yang jatuh.Ia sekali gus memberikan kadar peningkatan keseluruhan sebanyak 29 peratus.Naib Presiden Kanan QS, Ben Sowter, dalam kenyataan berkata, perjalanan Malaysia ke arah menjadinegara berpendapatan tinggi bergantung kepada kualiti sistem pendidikannya.Katanya, dengan memberi tumpuan kepada membangunkan asas pendidikan yang kukuh di peringkatrendah dan menengah, Malaysia berupaya memupuk generasi pelajar universiti akan datang."Pengalaman pembelajaran mereka perlu disertakan sekali dengan kemahiran dan kecekapan,memupuk kemahiran teknikal dan manusia yang diperlukan untuk berkembang maju dalam ekonomiglobal yang semakin berteraskan kecerdasan buatan (AI)."Pendekatan ini adalah kritikal bukan saja untuk mengekalkan pertumbuhan ekonomi tetapi juga untukmemenuhi permintaan yang semakin meningkat bagi tenaga kerja mahir ketika negara bersaing denganrakan serantau seperti Singapura, Korea dan Vietnam."Senarai kedudukan kami menekankan kepentingan kebolehpasaran dan kemampanan, kawasan dimana Malaysia mempunyai ruang untuk pertumbuhan di samping penyelidikan kehebatan yangmenjadi pemacu utama bagi daya tahan dan kemakmuran ekonomi masa depan Malaysia," katanya.Beliau berkata, Malaysia mempunyai hab pendidikan yang semakin berkembang, bersaing secara aktifuntuk mendapatkan sebahagian besar pelajar antarabangsa."Dengan lima universiti disenaraikan antara 100 terbaik dunia untuk penunjuk Nisbah PelajarAntarabangsa dan empat universiti antara 200 terbaik untuk Nisbah Fakulti Antarabangsa, Malaysiasedang mengorak langkah besar ke arah matlamat untuk menarik 250,000 pelajar antarabangsamenjelang 2025."Selain itu Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS), yang beroperasi di bawah KementerianPengajian Tinggi, bertanggungjawab mempromosikan Malaysia sebagai destinasi pengajian."Walaupun angka rasmi mengenai pendaftaran asing tidak dikeluarkan, pada tahun 2022 dianggarkanjumlah keseluruhan antara 130,000 dan 170,000 pelajar."Pasaran sumber teratas ialah China, Indonesia, Bangladesh, India dan Nigeria dengan Chinamenyumbang hampir separuh daripada pendaftaran.UM ditangga ke-60 terbaik dunia6/10/24, 12:29 PM UM ditangga ke-60 terbaik duniaread://https_www.bharian.com.my/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bharian.com.my%2Famp%2Fberita%2Fnasional%2F2024%2F06%2F1255112%2Fu… 1/2"Bagaimanapun, dari sudut impak penyelidikan, Malaysia masih kurang berbanding rakan serantau danglobalnya," katanya.Sementara itu, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) berada pada kedudukan 138 meningkat 21anak tangga, diikuti Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) berada pada kedudukan 146, Universiti PutraMalaysia (148), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (181).Universiti lain yang berada dalam senarai kedudukan ialah Taylor's University di tangga 251, UCSIUniversity (265), Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (269), INTI International University & Colleges(516), Sunway University (539), Universiti Utara Malaysia (554), Management and Science University(580), Universiti Teknologi MARA (587), Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (611),Universiti Tenaga Nasional (641), Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (661), Universiti MalaysiaPahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (741), Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (801) dan Universiti PendidikanSultan Idris (951).6/10/24, 12:29 PM UM ditangga ke-60 terbaik duniaread://https_www.bharian.com.my/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bharian.com.my%2Famp%2Fberita%2Fnasional%2F2024%2F06%2F1255112%2Fu… 2/2

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya (UM) has become the top Malaysian varsity in the QS WorldUniversity Rankings 2025 thanks to its excellent recognition among academics and employers.Climbing five rungs up to 60th spot in the 21st edition of the ranking, UM is also the only Malaysianuniversity in the top 100 and is third in South-East Asia.The country’s premier university is the top national performer in the Academic Reputation (62nd) andEmployer Reputation (34th) indicators, Employment Outcomes (163rd), International ResearchNetwork (140th) and Sustainability (132nd).In addition, UM improved 15 places and is now 163rd for Student Faculty Ratio, improved 20 placesto 234th for the International Students indicator, and climbed 22 places to 324th for the InternationalFaculty indicator.UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman said the university’s advancements ina majority of indicators point to its ability to compete with the best global universities.“The promising achievements as evident in the QS Rankings are the epitome of the university’sunwavering intent to advance its position as among the world’s best.“We will continue to ensure that both students and the academic and research fraternity are given theright capacity, support and intellectual dynamism and expertise in meeting the increasingly stiffchallenges facing the higher education sector and humanity,” he said in a statement on June 5.Coming in second was Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, which climbed 21 spots from 159th to 138th.The other research universities in the country – Universiti Sains Malaysia (146th), Universiti PutraMalaysia (148th) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (=181st) – round up the institutions listed in thetop 200.(Note: The ‘=’ symbol means it shares a rank with another institution.)Taylor’s University maintained its position as the top private university in Malaysia, ranking 251st,followed by UCSI University, which climbed 35 ranks to =265th.Taylor’s University vice-chancellor and president Prof Barry Winn said the university’s vision for thenext decade involves setting its sights higher, positioning itself as a world-class institution.“I am committed to upholding the highest standards at Taylor’s, to allow it to reach its full potential asa global leader in progressive and innovative teaching, research, and knowledge transfer,” he said.UCSI vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir said the new ranking was a fair reflection ofthe good work that was taking place at the university.“UCSI’s 35-spot rise is encouraging and I would like to thank all UCSI staff and students for theirefforts,” she said, adding that this was the third consecutive year the university is in the world’s top 1%of score, Malaysia is Asia’s top performer in International Student Ratio,among countries with 10 or more ranked universities.Five Malaysian universities are among the world’s top 100 for this indicator, with Asia PacificUniversity of Technology and Innovation (APU) leading and securing Malaysia’s highest rank at theindicator level.In a statement yesterday, QS said Malaysia is “making significant strides” towards its goal of attracting250,000 international students by 2025 with five Malaysian universities now ranked among the world’stop 100 for the International Student Ratio indicator and four universities among the top 200 forInternational Faculty Ratio.It also said Malaysia’s universities are gaining increased recognition among academics, with almost allranked universities showing improved year-on-year results.“Despite progress in other areas, Malaysia’s research impact still falls short compared with its regionaland global peers,” it added.QS senior vice-president Ben Sowter said: “Malaysia’s journey towards becoming a high-incomenation hinges on the quality of its educational system.”Overall, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States continued to dominate theranking for the 13th year, while the United Kingdom’s Imperial College London took second spot.University of Oxford, United Kingdom, maintained its rank (third) and shares the spot with the US-based Harvard University.Singapore is the only Asian country featured among the world’s top 10 in the latest rankings withNational University of Singapore ranking 8th globally.National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University rank first and second inSouth-East Asia.This year’s world university rankings feature 1,500 universities across 106 higher education
