The relationship between Mathematical Utility Theory and the Integrability Problem: some arguments in favour

    Get PDF
The resort to utility-theoretical issues will permit us to propose a constructive procedure for deriving a homogeneous of degree one, continuous function that gives raise to a primitive demand function under suitably mild conditions. This constitutes the first elementary proof of a necessary and sufficient condition for an integrability problem to have a solution by continuous (subjective utility) functions. Such achievement reinforces the relevance of a technique that was succesfully formalized in Alcantud and RodrĂguez-Palmero (2001). The analysis of these two works exposes deep relationships between two apparently separate fields: mathematical utility theory and the revealed preference approach to the integrability problem.Strong Axiom of Homothetic Revelation; revealed preference; continuous homogeneous of degree one utility; integrability of demand.

Isotonies on ordered cones throught the concept of a decreasing scale

    Get PDF
Using techniques based on decreasing scales, necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for the existence of a continuous and homogeneous of degree one real-valued function representing a (not necessarily complete) preorder defined on a cone of a real vector space. Applications to measure theory and expected utility are given as consequences

A list, comprising 129 species in 23 families, is presented of the fish commonly caught in 1992/93 in the commercial fisheries around Santarem, Para State, Brazil. The most important families were the Pimelodidae (22 spp.), Cichildae (20) and Serrasalmidae (15), and six species contribute over 50% of the catch in weight

Contribution of anadromous fish to the diet of European catfish in a large river system

Many anadromous fish species, when migrating from the sea to spawn in fresh waters, can potentially be a valuable prey for larger predatory fish, thereby efficiently linking these two ecosystems. Here, we assess the contribution of anadromous fish to the diet of European catfish (Silurus glanis) in a large river system (Garonne, southwestern France) using stable isotope analysis and allis shad (Alosa alosa) as an example of anadromous fish. Allis shad caught in the Garonne had a very distinct marine delta(13)C value, over 8 per thousand higher after lipid extraction compared to the mean delta(13)C value of all other potential freshwater prey fish. The delta(13)C values of European catfish varied considerably between these two extremes and some individuals were clearly specializing on freshwater prey, whereas others specialized on anadromous fish. The mean contribution of anadromous fish to the entire European catfish population was estimated to be between 53% and 65%, depending on the fractionation factor used for delta(13)C
