    Get PDF
The synthesis and photodecomposition behaviour of a family of CO releasing molecules (CORMs) based on [Mn(CO)₃bpy] derivatives connected to a semiconductor Quantum Dot (QD) sensitizer is described here. Compared to the non-sensitized complexes, such systems show a 2 to 6-fold increase of the photodecomposition rate upon irradiation with visible light

Despite its well-known toxicity, carbon monoxide (CO) is now recognized as a potential therapeutic agent. Its inherent toxicity, however, has limited clinical applications because uncontrolled inhalation of the gas leads to severe systemic derangements in higher organisms. In order to obviate life-threatening effects and administer the gas by bypassing the respiratory system, CO releasing molecules (CORMs) have emerged in the last decades as a plausible alternative to deliver controlled quantities of CO in cellular systems and tissues. As stable, solid-storage forms of CO, CORMs can be used to deliver the gas following activation by a stimulus. Light-activated CORMs, known as photoCORMs, are one such example. This class of molecules is particularly attractive because, for possible applications of CORMs, temporal and spatial control of CO delivery is highly desirable. However, systems triggered by visible light are rare. Most currently known photoCORMs are activated with UV light, but red light or even infrared photo-activation is required to ensure that structures deeper inside the body can be reached while minimizing photo-damage to healthy tissue. Thus, one of the most challenging chemical goals in the preparation of new photoCORMs is the reduction of radiation energy required for their activation, together with strategies to modulate the solubility, stability and nontoxicity of the organic or organometallic scaffolds. In this contribution, we review the latest advances in visible light-activated photoCORMs, and the first promising studies on near-infrared light activation of the same

This study aimed at exploring the students’ beliefs towards reading between those who have followed ER and those who have not in the distinct level of reading ability—high, intermediate, and low level. This present study was a qualitative study concerning the students’ perception towards a particular issue. The findings show that the students’ beliefs towards reading English, for those who have followed ER with a high level of competency, remains the same as intensive reading principles. While, unexpectedly, those who have not yet followed ER at the same level have some beliefs which refer to ER principles. For the intermediate and low level for either those who have or have not yet followed ER, their principles remained the same reflecting those of intensive reading. This study contributes practically to ER practitioners in implementing ER in order that ER, within classroom activities, can run as it is by minimizing the biases and maximizing its benefits based on the outcomes, the students’ beliefs towards reading in English. Theoretically, the contribution lies at an additional confirmation that the outputs of ER, in the form of students’ beliefs, may result unexpectedly for many factors contributing to its success must really be well-monitored. The conclusion and suggestions are then attached to the end of this paper

Dealing with cheque has an importance in our entire life as it is used in all fields and domains and is also used a significant source of money. For all of this and for other reasons, the criminal statute had to be taken under consideration to make it legal when dealing with the use of cheques according to Jordanian law and legal contexts. While breaking any of these legal contexts will result into investigation and punishment. According to the law, it is considered a crime to give a cheque with an insufficient balance or giving a cheque that has incomplete or an empty account. The current paper states clearly the following: (1) the consequences of giving a cheque without a balance and (2) explaining how Jordanian law deals with these kinds of crimes. Keywords: Cheque, crimes, Jordanian law, unbalanced cheques, penal code. DOI: 10.7176/JLPG/104-04 Publication date: December 31st 202

The need, awareness, and understanding about the early foreign languages teaching on young learners makes the education experts try to apply English learning and teaching as early as possible for students. Therefore, English has been introduced in formal educational institutions at the level of early childhood. This decision made experts have to consider several things in term of learning and teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) and early childhood as students when a foreign language is introduced and taught at the level of early childhood (young learners), then an understanding of how foreign language acquisition or second language on children (SLA) and learning and teaching foreign languages (Teaching English as Foreign Language / TEFL) in children needs to be understood and considered as a reference for conducting the learning process, so that good and appropriate learning methods can be formulated. In this article, the author tries to elaborate on the process of language acquisition in children (language acquisition), both in their first language (L1) and their second language (L2), as well as how an understanding of these can have a positive interfearence on the formulation and selection of the right method. in the process of learning and teaching English at the level of early childhoo

The experience of persons diagnosed with schizophrenia of their first admission to a South African psychiatric hospital ward for acute psychosis.

Schizophrenia is said to be one of the most critical and severe mental illnesses affecting one percent of the population globally (Torrey, 2001). The rationale for the present study is stemmed from the lack of research conducted, specifically in South Africa on the experiences of people diagnosed with schizophrenia of their first admission to a psychiatric hospital. The main aim of this study was to explore the experience of those diagnosed with schizophrenia of their first admission to a South African psychiatric hospital ward for acute psychosis. The research method used was semi-structured individual interviews with seven participants diagnosed with schizophrenia. Questions asked revolved around the participant’s first experience of being admitted to a psychiatric hospital. The participants’ responses were recorded and then analysed using thematic content analysis. The main themes which emerged during data analysis were: treatment, preconceived ideas of hospitalisation, incarceration, diagnosis of schizophrenia, stigmatization, law enforcement and social interactions during initial hospitalisation. What became evident from the analysis was that each participant had a different experience of their first hospitalisation. Some had more positive experiences, while the majority of the participants had frightening, distressing, emotionally painful or traumatic experiences during their first hospitalisation. The first hospital admission was also described as having huge implications for the person with the diagnosis of schizophrenia as it made them feel isolated and stigmatised, which further hindered them from recovering and reintegrating into society. This conclusion of this study draws attention to further research projects which might illuminate areas of intervention in the first admission process to psychiatric wards in South Africa

Red-light activated photoCORMs of Mn(I) species bearing electron deficient 2,2′-azopyridines

The realization of CO releasing molecules triggered by light (photoCORMs) within the phototherapeutic window (λ > 600 nm) constitutes an important goal for potential therapeutic applications of the molecules. The activation of photoCORMs with red/NIR light would enable exploiting the higher depth of penetration of this radiation with respect to higher energy photons. In this article we report a family of carbonyl Mn(I) complexes capable of releasing CO when triggered with red light (≥625 nm). Such complexes are based on 2,2′-azopyridine ligands modified by the introduction of electron-donating or electron-withdrawing substituents. Our results indicate that electron deficient ligands induce a gradual decrease of the HOMO−1/LUMO gap of the species (i.e. of the orbitals involved in the lowest energy transition), thus enabling a fine tuning of their visible absorption maxima between 630 and 693 nm. The synthesis of the complexes and their photodecomposition behaviour towards CO release are described. We suggest that this approach could be generalized for further development of low-energy activated photoCORMs
