    The dynamics of syntax acquisition: facilitation between syntactic structures

    This paper sets out to show how facilitation between different clause structures operates over time in syntax acquisition. The phenomenon of facilitation within given structures has been widely documented, yet inter-structure facilitation has rarely been reported so far. Our findings are based on the naturalistic production corpora of six toddlers learning Hebrew as their first language. We use regression analysis, a method that has not been used to study this phenomenon. We find that the proportion of errors among the earliest produced clauses in a structure is related to the degree of acceleration of that structure's learning curve; that with the accretion of structures the proportion of errors among the first clauses of new structures declines, as does the acceleration of their learning curves. We interpret our findings as showing that learning new syntactic structures is made easier, or facilitated, by previously acquired ones

    Uniform Bounds for Scheduling with Job Size Estimates

    We consider the problem of scheduling to minimize mean response time in M/G/1 queues where only estimated job sizes (processing times) are known to the scheduler, where a job of true size s has estimated size in the interval [? s, ? s] for some ? ? ? > 0. We evaluate each scheduling policy by its approximation ratio, which we define to be the ratio between its mean response time and that of Shortest Remaining Processing Time (SRPT), the optimal policy when true sizes are known. Our question: is there a scheduling policy that (a) has approximation ratio near 1 when ? and ? are near 1, (b) has approximation ratio bounded by some function of ? and ? even when they are far from 1, and (c) can be implemented without knowledge of ? and ?? We first show that naively running SRPT using estimated sizes in place of true sizes is not such a policy: its approximation ratio can be arbitrarily large for any fixed ? < 1. We then provide a simple variant of SRPT for estimated sizes that satisfies criteria (a), (b), and (c). In particular, we prove its approximation ratio approaches 1 uniformly as ? and ? approach 1. This is the first result showing this type of convergence for M/G/1 scheduling. We also study the Preemptive Shortest Job First (PSJF) policy, a cousin of SRPT. We show that, unlike SRPT, naively running PSJF using estimated sizes in place of true sizes satisfies criteria (b) and (c), as well as a weaker version of (a)

    What do Boards Really Do? Evidence from Minutes of Board Meetings

    We analyze a unique database from a sample of real-world boardrooms – minutes of board meetings and board-committee meetings of eleven business companies for which the Israeli government holds a substantial equity interest. We use these data to evaluate the underlying assumptions and predictions of models of boards of directors. These models generally fall into two categories: “managerial models” assume boards play a direct role in managing the firm, and “supervisory models” assume that boards’ monitor top management but do not make business decisions themselves. Consistent with the supervisory models, our minutes-based data suggest that boards spend most of their time monitoring management: 67% of the issues they discussed were of a supervisory nature, they were presented with only a single option in 99% of the issues discussed, and they disagreed with the CEO only 3.3% of the time. In addition, managerial models describe boards at times as well: Boards requested to receive further information or an update for 8% of the issues discussed, and they took an initiative with respect to 8.1% of them. In 63% of the meetings, boards took at least one of these actions or did not vote in line with the CEO.

We describe a patient with metastatic melanoma who presented with diffuse melanosis cutis, black urine and black pleural effusion. Very few medical conditions can cause black discoloration of body fluids, so this should prompt physicians to search for a number of potential underlying causes

    Altimeter processing tools for analyzing mesoscale ocean features

    Satellite altimeters provide many opportunities for oceanographers to supplement their research with a valuable new data set. The recent GEOSAT exact repeat mission is the first of several altimeter missions proposed during the next decade. To utilize this new data, a software package was developed at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the University of Hawaii to facilitate the extraction of useful information from the NODC distributed GEOSAT data tapes. This software package was written with portability and modularity in mind. It should be possible to use this package with little or no modifications on data from future altimeters. The code was written in C and tested on Sun workstations and is oriented toward UNIX operating systems. However, since standard code was used, the programs should port easily to other computer systems. The modularity of the code should enable users to create additional programs. Additional programs designed to handle collocated water vapor corrections are also included for comparison.Funding was provided by the Office of Naval Research through Grant No. N00014-86-K-0751

    Risk of Melanoma in Patients with Basal Cell Carcinoma: A Population-based Cohort Study

    Basal cell carcinoma is the most prevalent cancer in Caucasians worldwide. The aim of this study was to examine the overall risk of melanoma among patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma. This population-based retrospective cohort study included data from January 2010 to December 2018 from the databases of the Clalit Health Maintenance Organization and 2 major pathology laboratories in North District, Israel. The incidence and hazard ratio of melanoma in patients with a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma were determined. Of 466,700 participants, 51% were women and the mean (standard deviation) follow-up was 6.7 (2.9; range 1–9) years. A total of 3,338 patients were diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma during the study period, 82 of whom subsequently developed melanoma. Patients with basal cell carcinoma had a significantly higher incidence of melanoma than patients without basal cell carcinoma (2.46% vs 0.37%; p < 0.0001). Univariate Cox regression analysis revealed a hazard ratio of 6.6 (95% confidence interval: 3.6–12.1; p < 0.0001) for melanoma in patients with a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma. In conclusion, a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma confers a significant risk of melanoma.

    Implied Open‐circuit Voltage Imaging via a Single Bandpass Filter Method—Its First Application in Perovskite Solar Cells

    A novel, camera-based method for direct implied open-circuit voltage (iVOC_{OC}) imaging via the use of a single bandpass filter (s-BPF) is developed for large-area photovoltaic solar cells and precursors. The photoluminescence (PL) emission is imaged using a narrow BPF with centre energy inside the high-energy tail of the PL emission, utilising the close-to-unity and nearly constant absorptivity of typical photovoltaic devices in this energy range. As a result, the exact value of the sample\u27s absorptivity within the BPF transmission band is not required. The use of an s-BPF enables a fully contactless approach to calibrate the absolute PL photon flux for spectrally integrated detectors, including cameras. The method eliminates the need for knowledge of the imaging system spectral response. Through an appropriate choice of the BPF centre energy, a range of absorber compositions or a single absorber with different surface morphologies, such as planar and textured, can be imaged, all without the need for additional detection optics. The feasibility of this s-BPF method is first validated. The relative error in iVOC_{OC} is determined to be ≀1.5%. The method is then demonstrated on device stacks with two different perovskite compositions commonly used in single-junction and monolithic tandem solar cells

    A direct, camera-based implied open-circuit voltage (iVOC) imaging method via the novel use of a single bandpass filter (s-BPF) is developed for large-area photovoltaic solar cells and solar cell precursors. The use of a s-BPF enables the adaptation of a fully contactless approach to calibrate the absolute PL photon flux for camera-based spectrally-integrated imaging tools. The method eliminates the need for knowledge of the imaging system spectral response and the use of the emission and excitation spectral shapes. Through an appropriate choice of the BPF centre energy, a range of absorber compositions or a single absorber with different surface morphologies (e.g., planar vs textured) can be imaged, all without the need for additional detection optics. The feasibility of this s-BPF method is first assessed using a high-quality Cs0.05_{0.05}FA0.79_{0.79}MA0.16_{0.16}Pb(I0.83_{0.83}Br0.17_{0.17})3_3 perovskite neat film. The error in iVOC is determined to be less than 1.5%. The efficacy of the method is then demonstrated on device stacks with two different perovskite compositions commonly used in single-junction and monolithic tandem solar cells

    PCA-Correlated SNPs for Structure Identification in Worldwide Human Populations

    Existing methods to ascertain small sets of markers for the identification of human population structure require prior knowledge of individual ancestry. Based on Principal Components Analysis (PCA), and recent results in theoretical computer science, we present a novel algorithm that, applied on genomewide data, selects small subsets of SNPs (PCA-correlated SNPs) to reproduce the structure found by PCA on the complete dataset, without use of ancestry information. Evaluating our method on a previously described dataset (10,805 SNPs, 11 populations), we demonstrate that a very small set of PCA-correlated SNPs can be effectively employed to assign individuals to particular continents or populations, using a simple clustering algorithm. We validate our methods on the HapMap populations and achieve perfect intercontinental differentiation with 14 PCA-correlated SNPs. The Chinese and Japanese populations can be easily differentiated using less than 100 PCA-correlated SNPs ascertained after evaluating 1.7 million SNPs from HapMap. We show that, in general, structure informative SNPs are not portable across geographic regions. However, we manage to identify a general set of 50 PCA-correlated SNPs that effectively assigns individuals to one of nine different populations. Compared to analysis with the measure of informativeness, our methods, although unsupervised, achieved similar results. We proceed to demonstrate that our algorithm can be effectively used for the analysis of admixed populations without having to trace the origin of individuals. Analyzing a Puerto Rican dataset (192 individuals, 7,257 SNPs), we show that PCA-correlated SNPs can be used to successfully predict structure and ancestry proportions. We subsequently validate these SNPs for structure identification in an independent Puerto Rican dataset. The algorithm that we introduce runs in seconds and can be easily applied on large genome-wide datasets, facilitating the identification of population substructure, stratification assessment in multi-stage whole-genome association studies, and the study of demographic history in human populations
