Primordial black holes and secondary gravitational waves from natural inflation

The production of primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter (DM) and the generation of scalar induced secondary gravitational waves by using the enhancement mechanism with a peak function in the non-canonical kinetic term in natural inflation is discussed. We show explicitly that the power spectrum for the primordial curvature perturbation is enhanced at 101210^{12} Mpc1^{-1}, 10810^{8} Mpc1^{-1} and 10510^{5} Mpc1^{-1}, the production of PBH DM with peak masses around 1013 M10^{-13}\ M_{\odot}, the earth's mass and the stellar mass, and the generation of scalar induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) with peak frequencies around mHz, 10610^{-6} Hz and nHz, respectively. The PBHs with the mass scale 1013 M10^{-13}\ M_{\odot} can make up almost all the DM and the associated SIGWs is testable by spaced based gravitational wave observatory

Mind-Body Practice Changes Fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations in Intrinsic Control Networks

    Get PDF
Cognitive control impairment is a typical symptom largely reported in populations with neurological disorders. Previous studies have provided evidence about the changes in cognitive control induced by mind-body training. However, the neural correlates underlying the effect of extensive mind-body practice on cognitive control remain largely unknown. Using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, we characterized dynamic fluctuations in large-scale intrinsic connectivity networks associated with mind-body practice, and examined their differences between healthy controls and Tai Chi Chuan (TCC) practitioners. Compared with a control group, the TCC group revealed significantly decreased fractional Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations (fALFF) in the bilateral frontoparietal network, default mode network and dorsal prefrontal-angular gyri network. Furthermore, we detected a significant association between mind-body practice experience and fALFF in the default mode network, as well as an association between cognitive control performance and fALFF of the frontoparietal network. This provides the first evidence of large-scale functional connectivity in brain networks associated with mind-body practice, shedding light on the neural network changes that accompany intensive mind-body training. It also highlights the functionally plastic role of the frontoparietal network in the context of the “immune system” of mental health recently developed in relation to flexible hub theory

Fracture and Delamination Assessment of Prestressed Composite Concrete for Use with Pipe Jacking Method

    Get PDF
Prestressed composite concrete pipe (PCCP) has been widely used in water-transmission line and has been proven with many advantages over pure concrete or steel pipes, such as high performance with relatively low cost for materials as well as simplified installation and construction process. Recent efforts have been made to enable the PCCP structure suitable for pipe jacking method so as to replace the conventional cut and cover method. In this way, the construction time, disturbance to nearby structures, and the cost can be greatly reduced. In this paper, we present the full-scale experimental and numerical studies of PCCP and the evaluation of fracture and delamination behaviour of the structure when it is used with pipe jacking construction method subjected to various jacking forces and ground conditions

SMART: A Situation Model for Algebra Story Problems via Attributed Grammar

Solving algebra story problems remains a challenging task in artificial intelligence, which requires a detailed understanding of real-world situations and a strong mathematical reasoning capability. Previous neural solvers of math word problems directly translate problem texts into equations, lacking an explicit interpretation of the situations, and often fail to handle more sophisticated situations. To address such limits of neural solvers, we introduce the concept of a \emph{situation model}, which originates from psychology studies to represent the mental states of humans in problem-solving, and propose \emph{SMART}, which adopts attributed grammar as the representation of situation models for algebra story problems. Specifically, we first train an information extraction module to extract nodes, attributes, and relations from problem texts and then generate a parse graph based on a pre-defined attributed grammar. An iterative learning strategy is also proposed to improve the performance of SMART further. To rigorously study this task, we carefully curate a new dataset named \emph{ASP6.6k}. Experimental results on ASP6.6k show that the proposed model outperforms all previous neural solvers by a large margin while preserving much better interpretability. To test these models' generalization capability, we also design an out-of-distribution (OOD) evaluation, in which problems are more complex than those in the training set. Our model exceeds state-of-the-art models by 17\% in the OOD evaluation, demonstrating its superior generalization ability

An Ileal Crohn's Disease Gene Signature Based on Whole Human Genome Expression Profiles of Disease Unaffected Ileal Mucosal Biopsies

Previous genome-wide expression studies have highlighted distinct gene expression patterns in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) compared to control samples, but the interpretation of these studies has been limited by sample heterogeneity with respect to disease phenotype, disease activity, and anatomic sites. To further improve molecular classification of inflammatory bowel disease phenotypes we focused on a single anatomic site, the disease unaffected proximal ileal margin of resected ileum, and three phenotypes that were unlikely to overlap: ileal Crohn's disease (ileal CD), ulcerative colitis (UC), and control patients without IBD. Whole human genome (Agilent) expression profiling was conducted on two independent sets of disease-unaffected ileal samples collected from the proximal margin of resected ileum. Set 1 (47 ileal CD, 27 UC, and 25 Control non-IBD patients) was used as the training set and Set 2 was subsequently collected as an independent test set (10 ileal CD, 10 UC, and 10 control non-IBD patients). We compared the 17 gene signatures selected by four different feature-selection methods to distinguish ileal CD phenotype with non-CD phenotype. The four methods yielded different but overlapping solutions that were highly discriminating. All four of these methods selected FOLH1 as a common feature. This gene is an established biomarker for prostate cancer, but has not previously been associated with Crohn's disease. Immunohistochemical staining confirmed increased expression of FOLH1 in the ileal epithelium. These results provide evidence for convergent molecular abnormalities in the macroscopically disease unaffected proximal margin of resected ileum from ileal CD subjects

Probing for dynamics of dark energy and curvature of universe with latest cosmological observations

We use the newly released 182 Type Ia supernova data combined with the third-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropic Probe data (WMAP3) and large scale structure (LSS) information including SDSS and 2dFGRS to constrain the dark energy equation of state (EoS) as well as the curvature of universe ΩK\Omega_K. Using the full dataset of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and LSS rather than the shift parameter and linear growth factor, we make a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) global fit, while paying particular attention to the dark energy perturbation. Parameterizing the EoS as wDE(a)=w0+w1(1a)w_{DE}(a) = w_{0} + w_{1}(1-a), we find the best fit of (w0,w1w_0,w_1) is (1.053,0.944-1.053,0.944) and for wDE(a)=w0+w1sin(3/2πln(a))w_{DE}(a) = w_{0} + w_{1}\sin({3/2}\pi \ln(a)), the best fit for (w0,w1w_0,w_1) is (1.614,1.046-1.614,-1.046). We find that a flat universe is a good approximation, namely, ΩK>0.06|\Omega_K|>0.06 has been excluded by 2σ\sigma yet the inclusion of ΩK\Omega_K can affect the measurement of DE parameters owing to their correlation and the present systematic effects of SNIa measurements.Comment: The wrongly-generated last page of pdf file is remove
