Cohort records study of 19,655 women who received postabortion care in a tertiary hospital 2010–2013 in China : what trends can be observed?
The retrospective cohort epidemiological study was to investigate the characteristics of women who underwent induced abortion. Data were retrospectively collected from women who underwent induced abortions () at the Xiamen Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital (2010–2013). The characteristics of women who underwent induced abortions included mean age, unmarried status, no previous deliveries, first pregnancy, ≥2 abortions including the current one, and a history of caesarian section. From 2010 to 2013, mean age increased and declines were observed in the ratio of induced abortions to live births, the proportion of induced abortions among women of 15–24 years, those who were unmarried, had their first pregnancy, or had no history of delivery. However, the rates of induced abortions increased among women who were lactating, had a history of caesarian section, or had an interpregnancy interval of <6 months. This snapshot of induced abortions in China might suggest that the numbers are increasing but the ratio to live births has fallen. Methods should be improved to prevent unwanted pregnancies and reduce the number of induced abortions in China. It must be emphasized that differences in mentality and culture between countries might limit the representativeness of these results
Automatic Summarization in Chinese Product Reviews
With the increasing number of online comments, it was hard for buyers to find useful information in a short time so it made sense to do research on automatic summarization which fundamental work was focused on product reviews mining. Previous studies mainly focused on explicit features extraction whereas often ignored implicit features which hadn't been stated clearly but containing necessary information for analyzing comments. So how to quickly and accurately mine features from web reviews had important significance for summarization technology. In this paper, explicit features and “feature-opinion” pairs in the explicit sentences were extracted by Conditional Random Field and implicit product features were recognized by a bipartite graph model based on random walk algorithm. Then incorporating features and corresponding opinions into a structured text and the abstract was generated based on the extraction results. Prevalence and associated factors of self-reported medical errors and adverse events among operating room nurses in China
BackgroundIn recent decades, the prominence of medical errors (MEs) and adverse events (AEs) is fueled by several studies performed across the world. Correspondingly, a high prevalence of medical errors and adverse events have been reported. Operating room nurses (ORNs) were indispensable members of the operating process, and any kind of MEs or AEs from ORNs may cause serious results and even death to the patients. However, to the best of our knowledge, the prevalence and associated factors of MEs and AEs were never reported among ORNs in China, which is the largest country in population and health services quantity in the world.MethodsThis is a cross-sectional study, which was conducted among ORNs in China, and 787 valid questionnaires were analyzed in this study. MEs, AEs, gender, age, married status, religious belief, academic degree, manager or not, working years, working hours/week, physical disease, and mental health were evaluated in this study. MEs were evaluated by eight questions about the occurrence of eight kinds of MEs for the ORNs. For ORNs with MEs, further questions about clinical harm to the patients were interviewed, which analyzed AEs. Kessler 10 was used to evaluate the ORNs' mental health. Logistic regression was conducted to examine the factors associated with MEs and AEs.ResultsThe prevalence of MEs and AEs was 27.7 and 13.9% among ORNs, respectively. The most frequent MEs that occurred among ORNs were from surgical instruments (9.1%), disinfection (9.0%), equipment and consumables (8.9%), and specimen management (7.8%). MEs were positively associated with lower working years, poor mental health, and physical disease. The physical disease was positively associated with AEs.ConclusionThe prevalence of perceived MEs and AEs was at a higher level than other kinds of nurses. Fresh ORNs with physical and mental health problems were the risk population for MEs, and ORNs with physical disease were at a higher risk for AEs. All the findings implied that MEs and AEs were an important issue for ORNs, and ORNs with physical and mental health problems should be paid attention to control MEs and AEs

Federated Meta-Learning for Few-Shot Fault Diagnosis with Representation Encoding
Deep learning-based fault diagnosis (FD) approaches require a large amount of
training data, which are difficult to obtain since they are located across
different entities. Federated learning (FL) enables multiple clients to
collaboratively train a shared model with data privacy guaranteed. However, the
domain discrepancy and data scarcity problems among clients deteriorate the
performance of the global FL model. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel
framework called representation encoding-based federated meta-learning (REFML)
for few-shot FD. First, a novel training strategy based on representation
encoding and meta-learning is developed. It harnesses the inherent
heterogeneity among training clients, effectively transforming it into an
advantage for out-of-distribution generalization on unseen working conditions
or equipment types. Additionally, an adaptive interpolation method that
calculates the optimal combination of local and global models as the
initialization of local training is proposed. This helps to further utilize
local information to mitigate the negative effects of domain discrepancy. As a
result, high diagnostic accuracy can be achieved on unseen working conditions
or equipment types with limited training data. Compared with the
state-of-the-art methods, such as FedProx, the proposed REFML framework
achieves an increase in accuracy by 2.17%-6.50% when tested on unseen working
conditions of the same equipment type and 13.44%-18.33% when tested on totally
unseen equipment types, respectively
Expression of semaphorin 3A and neuropilin 1 with clinicopathological features and survival in human tongue cancer
Objective: To investigate the association between semaphorin 3A (SEMA 3A) and its receptor neuropilin 1 (NRP1)
and the clinicopathologic characteristics of patients with tongue cancer.
Study Design: Forty-three tongue squamous cell carcinoma specimens were included. Immunohistochemical
staining of SEMA3A and NRP1 was performed on 15 normal tongue epithelium specimens and the 43 tumour
specimens. Immunoreactivity was evaluated based on the staining intensity and distribution score. Statistical
analyses were performed using Chi-squared and Spearman tests and Kaplan-Meier analysis.
Results: SEMA3A was significantly down-regulated in tongue cancer compared with normal tongue (P=0.025),
while NRP1 was over-expressed in tumours (P=1 predicted shorter survival (P=0.045).
Conclusions: Aberrant expression of SEMA3A and its receptor NRP1 might be involved in the development of
tongue cancer and might be useful prognostic markers in this tumour type
Analysis of 10,000 ESTs from lymphocytes of the cynomolgus monkey to improve our understanding of its immune system
BACKGROUND: The cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) is one of the most widely used surrogate animal models for an increasing number of human diseases and vaccines, especially immune-system-related ones. Towards a better understanding of the gene expression background upon its immunogenetics, we constructed a cDNA library from Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-transformed B lymphocytes of a cynomolgus monkey and sequenced 10,000 randomly picked clones. RESULTS: After processing, 8,312 high-quality expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were generated and assembled into 3,728 unigenes. Annotations of these uniquely expressed transcripts demonstrated that out of the 2,524 open reading frame (ORF) positive unigenes (mitochondrial and ribosomal sequences were not included), 98.8% shared significant similarities (E-value less than 1e-10) with the NCBI nucleotide (nt) database, while only 67.7% (E-value less than 1e-5) did so with the NCBI non-redundant protein (nr) database. Further analysis revealed that 90.0% of the unigenes that shared no similarities to the nr database could be assigned to human chromosomes, in which 75 did not match significantly to any cynomolgus monkey and human ESTs. The mapping regions to known human genes on the human genome were described in detail. The protein family and domain analysis revealed that the first, second and fourth of the most abundantly expressed protein families were all assigned to immunoglobulin and major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-related proteins. The expression profiles of these genes were compared with that of homologous genes in human blood, lymph nodes and a RAMOS cell line, which demonstrated expression changes after transformation with EBV. The degree of sequence similarity of the MHC class I and II genes to the human reference sequences was evaluated. The results indicated that class I molecules showed weak amino acid identities (<90%), while class II showed slightly higher ones. CONCLUSION: These results indicated that the genes expressed in the cynomolgus monkey could be used to identify novel protein-coding genes and revise those incomplete or incorrect annotations in the human genome by comparative methods, since the old world monkeys and humans share high similarities at the molecular level, especially within coding regions. The identification of multiple genes involved in the immune response, their sequence variations to the human homologues, and their responses to EBV infection could provide useful information to improve our understanding of the cynomolgus monkey immune system
