    Mitigating interconnect and end host congestion in modern networks

    One of the most critical building blocks of the Internet is the mechanism to mitigate network congestion. While existing congestion control approaches have served their purpose well in the last decades, the last few years saw a significant increase in new applications and user demand, stressing the network infrastructure to the extent that new ways of handling congestion are required. This dissertation identifies the congestion problems caused by the increased scale of the network usage, both in inter-AS connects and on end hosts in data centers, and presents abstractions and frameworks that allow for improved solutions to mitigate congestion. To mitigate inter-AS congestion, we develop Unison, a framework that allows an ISP to jointly optimize its intra-domain routes and inter-domain routes, in collaboration with content providers. The basic idea is to provide the ISP operator and the neighbors of the ISP with an abstraction of the ISP network in the form of a virtual switch (vSwitch). Unison allows the ISP to provide hints to its neighbors, suggesting alternative routes that can improve their performance. We investigate how the vSwitch abstraction can be used to maximize the throughput of the ISP. To mitigate end-host congestion in data center networks, we develop a backpressure mechanism for queuing architecture in congested end hosts to cope with tens of thousands of flows. We show that current end-host mechanisms can lead to high CPU utilization, high tail latency, and low throughput in cases of congestion of egress traffic. We introduce the design, implementation, and evaluation of zero-drop networking (zD) stack, a new architecture for handling congestion of scheduled buffers. Besides queue overflow, another cause of congestion is CPU resource exhaustion. The CPU cost of processing packets in networking stacks, however, has not been fully investigated in the literature. Much of the focus of the community has been on scaling servers in terms of aggregate traffic intensity, but bottlenecks caused by the increasing number of concurrent flows have received little attention. We conduct a comprehensive analysis on the CPU cost of processing packets and identify the root cause that leads to high CPU overhead and degraded performance in terms of throughput and RTT.     Video Question Answering via Attribute-Augmented Attention Network Learning

    Video Question Answering is a challenging problem in visual information retrieval, which provides the answer to the referenced video content according to the question. However, the existing visual question answering approaches mainly tackle the problem of static image question, which may be ineffectively for video question answering due to the insufficiency of modeling the temporal dynamics of video contents. In this paper, we study the problem of video question answering by modeling its temporal dynamics with frame-level attention mechanism. We propose the attribute-augmented attention network learning framework that enables the joint frame-level attribute detection and unified video representation learning for video question answering. We then incorporate the multi-step reasoning process for our proposed attention network to further improve the performance. We construct a large-scale video question answering dataset. We conduct the experiments on both multiple-choice and open-ended video question answering tasks to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.Comment: Accepted for SIGIR 201

    Structural and functional abnormities of amygdala and prefrontal cortex in major depressive disorder with suicide attempts

    Finding neural features of suicide attempts (SA) in major depressive disorder (MDD) may be helpful in preventing suicidal behavior. The ventral and medial prefrontal cortex (PFC), as well as the amygdala form a circuit implicated in emotion regulation and the pathogenesis of MDD. The aim of this study was to identify whether patients with MDD who had a history of SA show structural and functional connectivity abnormalities in the amygdala and PFC relative to MDD patients without a history of SA. We measured gray matter volume in the amygdala and PFC and amygdala-PFC functional connectivity using structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 158 participants [38 MDD patients with a history of SA, 60 MDD patients without a history of SA, and 60 healthy control (HC)]. MDD patients with a history of SA had decreased gray matter volume in the right and left amygdala (F = 30.270, P = 0.000), ventral/medial/dorsal PFC (F = 15.349, P = 0.000), and diminished functional connectivity between the bilateral amygdala and ventral and medial PFC regions (F = 22.467, P = 0.000), compared with individuals who had MDD without a history of SA, and the HC group. These findings provide evidence that the amygdala and PFC may be closely related to the pathogenesis of suicidal behavior in MDD and implicate the amygdala-ventral/medial PFC circuit as a potential target for suicide intervention

    Stripe order and spin dynamics in triangular-lattice antiferromagnet KErSe2_{2}: A single-crystal study with a theoretical description

    The rare-earth triangular-lattice chalcogenide is a great platform for exploring both spin liquids and novel magnetic orders with anisotropic spin interactions and magnetic frustrations. Here, we report the thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements of rare-earth triangular-lattice chalcogenide KErSe2_{2}, using single-crystal samples. Our experiments revealed a long-range stripe order below 0.2 K. Although the magnetic order was three-dimensional, magnetic excitations exhibited negligible modulation along the z direction, indicating very weak interlayer coupling. Furthermore, magnetic excitation developed a well-defined spin-wave dispersion with a gap of ∼\sim0.03 meV at M points. Both the stripe order and spin-wave excitations could be quantitatively understood from the anisotropic spin interactions of the Er3+^{3+} Kramers doublets

    Frequency of health care provider recommendations for HPV vaccination: a survey in three large cities in China

    IntroductionHuman papillomavirus (HPV) infection, an important pathogenic factor for cervical cancer, can be prevented by the HPV vaccine. Health care provider (HCP) recommendations contribute to improve HPV vaccination coverage. The aim of this study was to assess the frequency of HCP recommendations for HPV vaccination and associated factors.MethodsFrom Nov 8 to Dec 6 in 2018, a cross-sectional study was conducted through online questionnaires among HCPs (n = 1,371) from hospitals in three large cities in China (Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen). Data on demographic characteristics, the frequency of HPV vaccination recommendations, HPV knowledge and related attitudes were collected through the questionnaires.ResultsAmong 1,371 participants, only 30.2% reported that they frequently recommended HPV vaccination. Multivariate analyses indicated that female sex, being employed in obstetrics or gynecology departments and community health service centers, and having higher self-reported and actual knowledge of HPV were factors associated with a higher recommendation frequency. Factors including a self-perceived non-obligation to provide recommendations and difficulties in discussing sexual topics were significantly correlated with less frequent recommendations. Employment in a community health service center (OR = 2.068, 95% CI: 1.070–3.999) was the strongest factor associated with the frequency of HCPs’ recommendations for HPV vaccination.DiscussionThe frequency of HCPs’ recommendations for HPV vaccination in China was much lower than that in many developed countries. To enhance the recommendation frequency, medical institutions should help HCPs gain more knowledge of HPV and master communication skills. At the same time, the government should take measures to enhance the accessibility of HPV vaccines. The media should help to alleviate people’s concerns and encourage them to face up sexual health
