Climate warming, euxinia and carbon isotope perturbations during the Carnian (Triassic) Crisis in South China
The Carnian Humid Episode (CHE), also known as the Carnian Pluvial Event, and associated biotic changes are major enigmas of the Mesozoic record in western Tethys. We show that the CHE also occurred in eastern Tethys (South China), suggestive of a much more widespread and probably global climate perturbation. Oxygen isotope records from conodont apatite indicate a double-pulse warming event. The CHE coincided with an initial warming of 4 °C. This was followed by a transient cooling period and then a prolonged ~7 °C warming in the later Carnian (Tuvalian 2). Carbon isotope perturbations associated with the CHE of western Tethys occurred contemporaneously in South China, and mark the start of a prolonged period of carbon cycle instability that persisted until the late Carnian. The dry-wet transition during the CHE coincides with the negative carbon isotope excursion and the temperature rise, pointing to an intensification of hydrologic cycle activities due to climatic warming. While carbonate platform shutdown in western Tethys is associated with an influx of siliciclastic sediment, the eastern Tethyan carbonate platforms are overlain by deep-water anoxic facies. The transition from oxygenated to euxinic facies was via a condensed, manganiferous carbonate (MnO content up to 15.1 wt%), that records an intense Mn shuttle operating in the basin. Significant siliciclastic influx in South China only occurred after the CHE climatic changes and was probably due to foreland basin development at the onset of the Indosinian Orogeny. The mid-Carnian biotic crisis thus coincided with several phenomena associated with major extinction events: a carbonate production crisis, climate warming, δ 13 C oscillations, marine anoxia, biotic turnover and flood basalt eruptions (of the Wrangellia Large Igneous Province)

A study of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR)
lineshape in the vicinity of was performed on a high-mobility 2D
electron gas formed in GaAs/AlGaAs. In higher Landau levels, application of an
RF field at the nuclear magnetic resonance frequency coincides with an observed
minimum in the longitudinal resistance, as predicted by the simple hyperfine
interaction picture. Near however, an anomalous dispersive lineshape is
observed where a resistance peak follows the usual minimum. In an effort to
understand the origin of this anomalous peak we have studied the resonance
under various RF and sample conditions. Interestingly, we show that the
lineshape can be completely inverted by simply applying a DC current. We
interpret this as evidence that the minima and maxima in the lineshape

Shifted Landau ladders and low field magneto-oscillations in high-mobility GaAs 2D hole systems
We present well-developed low-field magneto-resistance oscillations originating from zero-field spin splitting (ZFSS) of heavy holes in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. This low field oscillation is 1/B-periodic and emerges before the onset of Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations. The effect can be explained by resonant scattering between two Landau ladders shifted by the ZFSS gap, which in turn can be measured by comparing with the hole cyclotron energy. A front gate is fabricated to tune the ZFSS and hence the oscillation period
Effects of dietary chromium on growth, amino acid content and proteomic changes in Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus
781-786To assess the effect of dietary chromium, the growth rate, amino acid content and proteomic changes in the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus were compared, when fed with the diets amended with chromium-treated (58.27 mg Cr/kg dry weight) Macrocystis pyrifera and a Cr-free control diet (5.83 mg Cr/kg dry weight). After 10 days, the dietary chromium exposure decreased its growth rate and the amino acid content also changed. The proteomic changes were analyzed in A. japonicus after it was fed for 10 days with Cr-added and Cr-free control diet. The total of 1587 proteins were identified, of which 28 proteins were identified as differentially regulated proteins in sea cucumber to Cr stress. Among them, 10 proteins were identified. In summary, this work reported toxic effects in sea cucumber A. japonicus after dietary exposure to Cr

Growth, immunity and ammonia excretion of albino and normal Apostichopus japonicus (Selenka) feeding with various experimental diets
An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of six experimental diets on growth performance, ammonia excretion and immunity of albino and normal Apostichopus japonicus. A factorial design was used, the factors being type of diets (six levels) and colour of A. japonicus (two levels). A total of 30 randomly selected albino A. japonicus were housed in each (60 × 50 × 30 cm3) of 18 blue plastic aquaria to form six groups in triplicate, and the same set-up
was used for the normal A. japonicus. Each group of animals was fed with one of the six experimental diets. Apparent dry matter digestibility (ADMD) and apparent crude protein digestibility (ACPD) were analysed using acid-insoluble
ash (AIA) content method. At the end of the experiment, all
A. japonicus were harvested and weighed to calculate growth parameters. After weighing, six individuals from each aquarium were randomly sampled for immune indices.
Results indicated that all growth parameters of A. japonicus increased with decreasing nutrient content in their diets (p < .01), whereas an opposite result was observed in
case of the ammonia-nitrogen production by A. japonicus. Normal A. japonicus grew better (p < .01) and produced lower (p < .01) quantity of ammonia nitrogen compared to the albino A. japonicus. Immunity particularly superoxide dismutase and lysozyme activities was higher (p < .05) in normal compared to albino A. japonicus. Considering
all measured variables, D1 (diet containing crude protein, crude lipid, carbohydrate and crude ash 51.8, 8.7, 231.3, 708.2 g/kg, respectively) was the best diet among all
experimental diets. More research is still needed to optimize nutrients in the diet of A. japonicus, as this study does not provide information about critical threshold level of nutrients in diets. Until then, diet D1 can be recommended for A. japonicus aquaculture

The extended disc and halo of the andromeda galaxy observed with spitzer-IRAC
We present the first results from an extended survey of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) using 41.1 h of observations by Spitzer-IRAC at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. This survey extends previous observations to the outer disc and halo, covering total lengths of 4˙ 4 and 6˙6 along the minor and major axes, respectively. We have produced surface brightness profiles by combining the integrated light from background-corrected maps with stellar counts from a new catalogue of point sources. Using auxiliary catalogues, we have carried out a statistical analysis in colour-magnitude space to discriminate M31 objects from foreground Milky Way stars and background galaxies. The catalogue includes 426 529 sources, of which 66 per cent have been assigned probability values to identify M31 objects with magnitude depths of [3.6]=19.0±0.2, [4.5]=18.7±0.2.We discuss applications of our data for constraining the stellar mass and characterizing point sources in the outer radii
Relation between flux formation and pairing in doped antiferromagnets
We demonstrate that patterns formed by the current-current correlation
function are landmarks which indicate that spin bipolarons form in doped
antiferromagnets. Holes which constitute a spin bipolaron reside at opposite
ends of a line (string) formed by the defects in the antiferromagnetic spin
background. The string is relatively highly mobile, because the motion of a
hole at its end does not raise extensively the number of defects, provided that
the hole at the other end of the line follows along the same track. Appropriate
coherent combinations of string states realize some irreducible representations
of the point group C_4v. Creep of strings favors d- and p-wave states. Some
more subtle processes decide the symmetry of pairing. The pattern of the
current correlation function, that defines the structure of flux, emerges from
motion of holes at string ends and coherence factors with which string states
appear in the wave function of the bound state. Condensation of bipolarons and
phase coherence between them puts to infinity the correlation length of the
current correlation function and establishes the flux in the system.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Contribution of biomimetic collagen-ligand interaction to intrafibrillar mineralization
Contemporary models of intrafibrillar mineralization mechanisms are established using collagen fibrils as templates without considering the contribution from collagen-bound apatite nucleation inhibitors. However, collagen matrices destined for mineralization in vertebrates contain bound matrix proteins for intrafibrillar mineralization. Negatively charged, high\u2013molecular weight polycarboxylic acid is cross-linked to reconstituted collagen to create a model for examining the contribution of collagen-ligand interaction to intrafibrillar mineralization. Cryogenic electron microscopy and molecular dynamics simulation show that, after cross-linking to collagen, the bound polyelectrolyte caches prenucleation cluster singlets into chain-like aggregates along the fibrillar surface to increase the pool of mineralization precursors available for intrafibrillar mineralization. Higher-quality mineralized scaffolds with better biomechanical properties are achieved compared with mineralization of unmodified scaffolds in polyelectrolyte-stabilized mineralization solution. Collagen-ligand interaction provides insights on the genesis of heterogeneously mineralized tissues and the potential causes of ectopic calcification in nonmineralized body tissues
