    On design of robust fault detection filter in finite-frequency domain with regional pole assignment

    This brief is concerned with the fault detection (FD) filter design problem for an uncertain linear discrete-time system in the finite-frequency domain with regional pole assignment. An optimized FD filter is designed such that: 1) the FD dynamics is quadratically D-stable; 2) the effect from the exogenous disturbance on the residual is attenuated with respect to a minimized H∞-norm; and 3) the sensitivity of the residual to the fault is enhanced by means of a maximized H--norm. With the aid of the generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma, the mixed H--/H∞ performance and the D-stability requirement are guaranteed by solving a convex optimization problem. An iterative algorithm for designing the desired FD filter is proposed by evaluating the threshold on the generated residual function.     L-Visibility Drawings of IC-planar Graphs

    An IC-plane graph is a topological graph where every edge is crossed at most once and no two crossed edges share a vertex. We show that every IC-plane graph has a visibility drawing where every vertex is an L-shape, and every edge is either a horizontal or vertical segment. As a byproduct of our drawing technique, we prove that an IC-plane graph has a RAC drawing in quadratic area with at most two bends per edge

    Grid Voltage Synchronization for Unbalanced Voltages Using the Energy Operator

    This paper presents a novel synchronization technique which can identify the grid voltage frequency and phase angle under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The method combines the features of two different energy operator schemes: the basic one for estimating the frequency of the grid voltages and the cross-energy operator for phase tracking. Using a moving data window of five samples the algorithm can track the fundamental frequency and phase angle quickly and accurately. The paper discusses the fundamental principles of the method, highlights its features and filter requirements in implementation. An experimental implementation of this method is presented which validates its performance for practical operation. The ability of the proposed method to enable a STATCOM riding-through unbalanced grid voltage condition is verified by the results from a power network simulation study

    Real estate investments and financial stability : evidence from regional commercial banks in China

    The 2008 United States subprime mortgage crisis demonstrated how developments in real estate markets can cause instability in the banking sector and raised concerns in many emerging economies with significant real estate development and a rapidly growing commercial banking sector, particularly in China. There is clear evidence that commercial banks in China, especially regional commercial banks, have lent significantly to the real estate sector. The recent slowdown in the housing market in China and the increase in nonperforming loans (NPLs) in China's commercial banking sector motivated us to investigate the connection between real estate markets and banking stability. This paper proposes three testable hypotheses linking the growth of investment in real estate and the stability of regional commercial banks in China, measured by NPLs. Our empirical results reveal a close connection between the growth of investment in real estate and the NPLs among regional commercial banks, and its sensitivity to real estate market cycles. When real estate market activity declines, our results suggest, regional commercial banks can find themselves in trouble if they have significant exposure to one type of (real estate) asset. In addition, we find that regional bank competition plays a critical role in defining the relationship between bank stability and real estate investment activity

    Thermoelastic properties of MgSiO3-majorite at high temperatures and pressures: A first principles study

    As the major component of garnet, the second most abundant phase in Earth's transition zone, MgSiO3-majorite plays a fundamental role in controlling the state and dynamics of Earth's mantle. However, due to challenges of experiments and simulations, there are still very limited data on the elastic properties of MgSiO3-majorite at simultaneously high temperatures and pressures. In this study, we have carried out extensive first principles calculations to determine the thermoelastic properties of MgSiO3-majorite up to 2000 K and 40 GPa. We find that the elastic constants of MgSiO3-majorite change significantly over the temperature and pressure range studied, with noticeable non-linearities in their pressure dependences. The seismic anisotropy of MgSiO3-majorite is high and generally increases with pressure. It is much higher than that of the other end-members of garnet and ringwoodite, which makes it the most anisotropic mineral in assemblages expected in the lower transition zone. Based on our calculated elastic moduli and with careful elimination of systematic errors, we establish a third-order Birch-Murnaghan-Mie-Grüneisen model for MgSiO3-majorite with the parameters: V0 = 114.1 cm3/mol, K0 = 163.6 GPa, G0 = 86.4 GPa, K0′ = 4.44, G0′ = 1.16, γ0 = 1.08, q0 = 0.48, ηS0 = 0.76, and θ0 = 822.5 K. Integrating our results into a thermodynamic model able to predict the properties of mantle assemblages, we find that a pyrolite composition produces velocities that agree with the seismic model AK135 in the upper transition zone. In the lower transition zone, a pyrolite composition fits well with some specific local observations, but a mechanical mixture with 18% basalt and 82% harzburgite is in better agreement with the global seismic model PREM. The much larger abundance of MgSiO3-majorite in the garnet phase of harzburgite suggests that the anisotropy in the lower transition zone may not be negligible and would be observable at least in the heterogeneous zones near subducting slabs

    Knowledge Graph Completion to Predict Polypharmacy Side Effects

    The polypharmacy side effect prediction problem considers cases in which two drugs taken individually do not result in a particular side effect; however, when the two drugs are taken in combination, the side effect manifests. In this work, we demonstrate that multi-relational knowledge graph completion achieves state-of-the-art results on the polypharmacy side effect prediction problem. Empirical results show that our approach is particularly effective when the protein targets of the drugs are well-characterized.     T-Bet and Eomes Regulate the Balance between the Effector/Central Memory T Cells versus Memory Stem Like T Cells

    Memory T cells are composed of effector, central, and memory stem cells. Previous studies have implicated that both T-bet and Eomes are involved in the generation of effector and central memory CD8 T cells. The exact role of these transcription factors in shaping the memory T cell pool is not well understood, particularly with memory stem T cells. Here, we demonstrate that both T-bet or Eomes are required for elimination of established tumors by adoptively transferred CD8 T cells. We also examined the role of T-bet and Eomes in the generation of tumor-specific memory T cell subsets upon adoptive transfer. We showed that combined T-bet and Eomes deficiency resulted in a severe reduction in the number of effector/central memory T cells but an increase in the percentage of CD62LhighCD44low Sca-1+ T cells which were similar to the phenotype of memory stem T cells. Despite preserving large numbers of phenotypic memory stem T cells, the lack of both of T-bet and Eomes resulted in a profound defect in antitumor memory responses, suggesting T-bet and Eomes are crucial for the antitumor function of these memory T cells. Our study establishes that T-bet and Eomes cooperate to promote the phenotype of effector/central memory CD8 T cell versus that of memory stem like T cells. © 2013 Li et al

    Stereo Computation for a Single Mixture Image

    This paper proposes an original problem of \emph{stereo computation from a single mixture image}-- a challenging problem that had not been researched before. The goal is to separate (\ie, unmix) a single mixture image into two constitute image layers, such that the two layers form a left-right stereo image pair, from which a valid disparity map can be recovered. This is a severely illposed problem, from one input image one effectively aims to recover three (\ie, left image, right image and a disparity map). In this work we give a novel deep-learning based solution, by jointly solving the two subtasks of image layer separation as well as stereo matching. Training our deep net is a simple task, as it does not need to have disparity maps.
