    Promoting cold-start items in recommender systems

    As one of major challenges, cold-start problem plagues nearly all recommender systems. In particular, new items will be overlooked, impeding the development of new products online. Given limited resources, how to utilize the knowledge of recommender systems and design efficient marketing strategy for new items is extremely important. In this paper, we convert this ticklish issue into a clear mathematical problem based on a bipartite network representation. Under the most widely used algorithm in real e-commerce recommender systems, so-called the item-based collaborative filtering, we show that to simply push new items to active users is not a good strategy. To our surprise, experiments on real recommender systems indicate that to connect new items with some less active users will statistically yield better performance, namely these new items will have more chance to appear in other users' recommendation lists. Further analysis suggests that the disassortative nature of recommender systems contributes to such observation. In a word, getting in-depth understanding on recommender systems could pave the way for the owners to popularize their cold-start products with low costs.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure

    Microstructure measurement and microgeometric packing characterization of rigid polyurethane foam defects

    Streak and blister cell defects pose extensive surface problems for rigid polyurethane foams. In this study, these morphological anomalies were visually inspected using 2D optical techniques, and the cell microstructural coefficients including degree of anisotropy, cell circumdiameter, and the volumetric isoperimetric quotient were calculated from the observations. A geometric regular polyhedron approximation method was developed based on relative density equations, in order to characterize the packing structures of both normal and anomalous cells. The reversely calculated cell volume constant, Cc, from polyhedron geometric voxels was compared with the empirical polyhedron cell volume value, Ch. The geometric relationship between actual cells and approximated polyhedrons was characterized by the defined volumetric isoperimetric quotient. Binary packing structures were derived from deviation comparisons between the two cell volume constants, and the assumed partial relative density ratios of the two individual packing polyhedrons. The modelling results show that normal cells have a similar packing to the Weaire-Phelan model, while anomalous cells have a dodecahedron/icosidodecahedron binary packing

    In this study, an electrochemical immunosensor for milk progesterone produced by dairy cows was developed. Using the immunosensor, milk progesterone levels in healthy estrus dairy cows was found to range from 1 to 6 ng/mL 20 days after estrus. There were high levels of progesterone in the milk from cows with prolonged luteal phase and luteal cysts, which ranged from 15 to 28 and 19 to 29 ng/mL, respectively. Cows with inactive ovaries also showed low milk progesterone levels of 1-8 ng/mL, but they had lower plasma follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels than the healthy estrous cycle dairy cows.Ovim je istraživanjem razvijen elektrokemijski imunosenzor za otkrivanje progesterona u mlijeku dobivenom od mliječnih krava. Upotrebom imunosenzora u zdravih krava za proizvodnju mlijeka 20 dana nakon estrusa utvrđene su razine progesterona u rasponu od 1 do 6 ng/mL. U mlijeku krava s produljenom luteinskom fazom i luteinskim cistama utvrđena je visoka razina progesterona, u rasponu od 15 do 28 te od 19 do 29 ng/mL. Krave s neaktivnim jajnicima također su pokazale nisku razinu progesterona u mlijeku, od 1 do 8 ng/mL. Te su krave, u odnosu na zdrave krave za proizvodnju mlijeka u estrusnoj fazi ciklusa, očitovale nižu razinu folikulostimulacijskog hormona u plazmi (FSH)

    Exchange-biased hybrid gamma-Fe2O3/NiO core-shell nanostructures:three-step synthesis, microstructure, and magnetic properties

    A two-step solvothermal method combining a calcination process was conducted to synthesize gamma-Fe2O3/NiO core-shell nanostructures with controlled microstructure. The formation mechanism of this binary system has been discussed, and the influence of microstructures on magnetic properties has been analyzed in detail. Microstructural characterizations reveal that the NiO shells consisted of many irregular nanosheets with disordered orientations and monocrystalline structures, packed on the surface of the gamma-Fe2O3 microspheres. Both the grain size and NiO content of nanostructures increase with the increasing calcination temperature from 300 degrees C to 400 degrees C, accompanied by an enhancement of the compactness of NiO shells. Magnetic studies indicate that their magnetic properties are determined by four factors: the size effect, NiO phase content, interface microstructure, i.e. contact mode, area, roughness and compactness, and FM-AFM (where FM and AFM denote the ferromagnetic gamma-Fe2O3 and the antiferromagnetic NiO components, respectively) coupling effect. At 5 K, the gamma-Fe2O3/NiO core-shell nanostructures display certain exchange bias (H-E = 60 Oe) and enhanced coercivity (H-C = 213 Oe)

    X-ray absorption measurements at a bending magnet beamline with an Everhart–Thornley detector: A monolayer of Ho<sub>3</sub>N@C<sub>80</sub> on graphene

    X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) is used for measuring monolayer quantities of Ho[Formula: see text]N@C[Formula: see text] endofullerene molecules on graphene at a low flux bending magnet beamline. The total electron yield is measured with an Everhart–Thornley detector. In comparison to sample current measurements with the same noise level, our approach reduces data acquisition time and radiation dose by a factor of 25. As the first application of this setup, we report temperature-dependent measurements of the Ho M[Formula: see text] edge with per mille accuracy. This documents the advantages and capabilities of an Everhart–Thornely detector for XAS measurements under low x-ray flux

    Development of a Fatty Liver Model by Restricted Feeding of Lactating Sheep

    Background:  As a frequent subclinical disease, fatty liver disease (FLD) is associated with a severe negative energy balance (NEB) during the early lactation period, and usually cause of economic loss to dairy farmers. Liver biopsy is the gold standard for the assessment of FLD. However, as an invasive procedure, liver biopsy has several limitations and such procedures are not readily available to dairy farmers. To further evaluate FLD in dairy cows, a FLD model of lactating sheep was developed by simulation of the state of negative energy balance (NEB).Materials, Methods & Results: Fourteen pregnancy thin-tail ewes were divided into control group (CG, n = 4), non-lamb restrained feeding group (NRG, n = 4) and single birth restrained feeding group (SRG, n = 6). After lambing, NRG and SRG ewe were received a feed restrained diet for 16 days. Liver biopsies and blood was collected on days 1, 4, 7, 10, 13, and 16, and biochemical parameters were analyzed. With restricted feeding and lactation administration, ewes in SRG showed increased liver fat concentrations (LFC) from days 4 post-administration and severe LFC was detected at day 13. Compared with CG, SRG sheep showed significant lower concentration of serum glucose (Glu) from days 7-13 and higher non-esterified fatty acid (NEFA) from days 4-16, β-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA) from days 4-16, triglyceride from days 4-16, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol from days 4-16, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) from days 13-16, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) at days 16. While, ewes in NRG showed normal LFC levels, and high concentration of serum Glu and insulin from days 4-16 were detected than CG and SRG ewes. With restricted feeding, ewes in NRG and SRG showed significant low level of revised quantitative insulin sensitivity check index from days 4-16 and high level of liver total cholesterol (TC) at day 16. Liver pathological characteristics showed LFC of NEB sheep was first detected around the liver portal area.Discussion: In this study, a model of FLD in lactating thin-tail sheep was developed by restricted feeding. Serum glucose concentrations were sharply decreased in SRG sheep,that was due to the large energy requirements for lactation and low energy provided by a restricted diet. While non-lactating NRG sheep demonstrated lower fat mobilization, which was considered to contribute to the high concentrations of serum glucose, as compared to SRG sheep. Meanwhile, in a state of NEB, oxaloacetic acid, which is generated by glycolysis and glycogenic amino acids, tends to be used for gluconeogenesis, that a generous amount of NEFA is incompletely oxidized to generate ketone body in SRG sheep, which is a major component of BHBA. Liver TC concentrations were significantly higher in NRG sheep than those in the SRG sheep, while liver triglyceride was significantly lower. The high level of liver TC in NRG sheep was considered to induce removal of triglyceride from the liver in the form of VLDL. Compared with CG sheep, although higher levels of liver TC were detected in SRG sheep on postpartum day 16, these levels were considered too low to induce significant depletion of triglycerides from the liver. In this study, the increase in serum AST and LDH was considered to cause by oxidative stress in mitochondria, and LDH concentrations was considered more sensitively than AST for LFC caused by NEB. Liver pathological characteristics showed that FLD caused by NEB had a major impact on reduced LFC, although no significant liver fibrosis was detected. While different from FLD caused by high-fat diet, TG was first accumulates around the hepatic lobules and LFC of NEB sheep was first detected around the liver portal area. It was considered that high concentrations of NEFA are prioritized for oxygenation in the liver portal area, which results in triglyceride accumulation

    A Near-Infrared Spectrometer Based on Novel Grating Light Modulators

    A near-infrared spectrometer based on novel MOEMS grating light modulators is proposed. The spectrum detection method that combines a grating light modulator array with a single near-infrared detector has been applied. Firstly, optics theory has been used to analyze the essential principles of the proposed spectroscopic sensor. Secondly, the grating light modulators have been designed and fabricated by micro-machining technology. Finally, the principles of this spectroscopic sensor have been validated and its key parameters have been tested by experiments. The result shows that the spectral resolution is better than 10 nm, the wavelength deviation is less than 1 nm, the deviation of the intensity of peak wavelength is no more than 0.5%, the driving voltage of grating light modulators array device is below 25 V and the response frequency of it is about 5 kHz. With low cost, satisfactory precision, portability and other advantages, the spectrometer should find potential applications in food safety and quality monitoring, pharmaceutical identification and agriculture product quality classification

    Enhanced antitumor immunity by targeting dendritic cells with tumor cell lysate-loaded chitosan nanoparticles vaccine

    Whole tumor cell lysates (TCL) have been implemented as tumor antigens for cancer vaccine development, although clinical outcomes of TCL-based antitumor immunotherapy remain unsatisfactory. In order to improve the efficacy of TCL-based vaccines, biomaterials have been employed to enhance antigen delivery and presentation. Here, we have developed chitosan nanoparticles (CTS NPs) with surface mannose (Man) moieties for specific dendritic cells (DCs) targeting (Man-CTS NPs). The Man-CTS NPs were then loaded with TCL generated from B16 melanoma cells (Man-CTS-TCL NPs) for in vitro and in vivo assessment. Potency of the Man-CTS-TCL NPs as cancer vaccine was also assessed in vivo by immunization of mice with Man-CTS-TCL NPs followed by re-challenge with B16 melanoma cell inoculation. We have shown here that Man-CTS-TCL NPs promote bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (BMDCs) maturation and antigen presentation in vitro. In vivo evaluation further demonstrated that the Man-CTS-TCL NPs were readily taken up by endogenous DCs within the draining lymph node (DLN) following subcutaneous administration accompanied by increasing in serum IFN-γ and IL-4 levels. Tumor growth was also significantly delayed in mice primed with Man-CTS-TCL NPs vaccine, attributable at least in part to cytotoxic T lymphocytes response. Moreover, Man-CTS-TCL NPs vaccine also exhibited therapeutic effects in mice with melanoma. Thus, we report here the Man-CTS-TCL NPs as effective anti-tumor vaccine for cancer immunotherapy

    Coronin-1C is a novel biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma invasive progression identified by proteomics analysis and clinical validation

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>To better search for potential markers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) invasion and metastasis, proteomic approach was applied to identify potential metastasis biomarkers associated with HCC.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Membrane proteins were extracted from MHCC97L and HCCLM9 cells, with a similar genetic background and remarkably different metastasis potential, and compared by SDS-PAGE and identified by ESI-MS/MS. The results were further validated by western blot analysis, immunohistochemistry (IHC) of tumor tissues from HCCLM9- and MHCC97L-nude mice, and clinical specimens.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Membrane proteins were extracted from MHCC97L and HCCLM9 cell and compared by SDS-PAGE analyses. A total of 14 differentially expressed proteins were identified by ESI-MS/MS. Coronin-1C, a promising candidate, was found to be overexpressed in HCCLM9 cells as compared with MHCC97L cells, and validated by western blot and IHC from both nude mice tumor tissues and clinical specimens. Coronin-1C level showed an abrupt upsurge when pulmonary metastasis occurred. Increasing coronin-1C expression was found in liver cancer tissues of HCCLM9-nude mice with spontaneous pulmonary metastasis. IHC study on human HCC specimens revealed that more patients in the higher coronin-1C group had overt larger tumor and more advanced stage.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Coronin-1C could be a candidate biomarker to predict HCC invasive behavior.</p
