    Assessing the Harvest Maturity of Brazilian Mangoes

    No clear criterion exists to determine the optimum time to harvest mango. Some empirical relations are used to assess maturity, such as shoulder development. Moreover, as a result of the typical growing conditions in tropical climates, a huge variation in maturity and ripeness exists, seriously hampering the export of fruit in the global chain. The consequence for consumers in western countries is that sometimes mangoes are overripe at the retailer, or have to be kept for several days, even weeks, to reach the edible state, provided they do not rot in the meantime. To ensure an edible quality, the chlorophyll content in the fruit flesh, measured at harvest by Time-resolved Reflectance Spectroscopy (TRS), could be used as a maturity criterion for mango fruit. Commercially grown fruit were harvested in Brazil and transported to Italy by plane. Fruits were measured using TRS at 630 nm for absorption coefficient (”a) and skin colour. The development of ”a was followed on 60 fruits during 15 days of storage at 20°C. The remainders of fruit were used to measure firmness destructively. Absorption coefficient decreased during shelf life according to a logistic pattern, as expected for colour development. Taking the variation between the individual fruit into account, 72% of the variation was accounted for. Nevertheless, ”a assessed at harvest could be converted into a biological shift factor (BSF), as an expression of the maturity at harvest of each individual fruit. This biological shift factor explained about 70% of the variation in firmness development in individual fruit. These preliminary results indicate that TRS methodology coupled with BSF theory could be useful in assessing maturity at harvest and assuring acceptable eating quality of mango

    Estimating abundance of an elusive cetacean in a complex environment: Harbor porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) in inland waters of Southeast Alaska

    The harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) is common in temperate waters of the eastern North Pacific Ocean, including Southeast Alaska inland waters, a complex environment comprised of open waterways, narrow channels, and inlets. Two demographically independent populations are currently recognized in this region. Bycatch of porpoises in the salmon drift gillnet fisheries is suspected to occur regularly. In this study, we apply distance sampling to estimate abundance of harbor porpoise during ship surveys carried out in the summer of 2019. A stratified survey design was implemented to sample different harbor porpoise habitats. Survey tracklines were allocated following a randomized survey design with uniform coverage probability. Density and abundance for the northern and southern Southeast Alaska inland water populations were computed using a combination of design-based line- and strip-transect methods. A total of 2,893 km was surveyed in sea state conditions ranging from Beaufort 0 to 3 and 194 harbor porpoise groups (301 individuals) were detected. An independent sighting dataset from surveys conducted between 1991 and 2012 were used to calculate the probability of missing porpoise groups on the survey trackline (g[0]=0.53, CV=0.11). Abundance of the northern and southern populations were estimated at 1,619 (CV=0.26) and 890 (CV=0.37) porpoises, respectively. Bycatch estimates, which were only obtained for a portion of the drift gillnet fishery, suggest that mortality within the range of the southern population may be unsustainable. Harbor porpoises are highly vulnerable to mortality in gillnets, therefore monitoring abundance and bycatch is important for evaluating the potential impact of fisheries on this species in Southeast Alaska

    Heat-kernel expansion and zeta function regularisation are discussed for Laplace type operators with discrete spectrum in non compact domains. Since a general theory is lacking, the heat-kernel expansion is investigated by means of several examples. It is pointed out that for a class of exponential (analytic) interactions, generically the non-compactness of the domain gives rise to logarithmic terms in the heat-kernel expansion. Then, a meromorphic continuation of the associated zeta function is investigated. A simple model is considered, for which the analytic continuation of the zeta function is not regular at the origin, displaying a pole of higher order. For a physically meaningful evaluation of the related functional determinant, a generalised zeta function regularisation procedure is proposed.Comment: Latex, 14 pages, no figures.     COVID-19 related psychological burden and potential benefits of vaccination - data from a repeated cross-sectional survey in healthcare workers

    The COVID-19 pandemic is impacting the psychological well-being, especially of health care workers, for more than two years now. Here, we followed-up on a survey we conducted at the very beginning of the pandemic, to determine potential changes in psychological strain experienced by health care workers one year later. Since our first survey in 2020, COVID-19 vaccines have been established, thus we assessed whether vaccination-status might modulate psychological burden of health care workers. We also collected data on resilience and sleep, as those might be related to successful coping. Between March and April 2021, nurses and physicians (N ​= ​286) working at the University Hospital Augsburg - with high or low exposure to COVID-19 patients - took part in an online survey. We found that fully vaccinated personnel reported lower levels of anxiety, depression, stress and exhaustion suggesting the potential positive consequences of vaccination beyond the obvious protection against a COVID-19 infection. Nurses reported more depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress and exhaustion and lower levels of job fulfilment than physicians. Individuals with high exposure to COVID-19 patients reported higher exhaustion and depersonalization. Resilience and sleep quality were significantly correlated with psychological and work-related burden, suggesting their potential role as protective resources. In general, the comparison of the present data to the survey conducted in 2020 suggests an overall increase of psychological burden in health care workers.     Texture image analysis in differentiating malignant from benign adrenal cortical tumors in children and adults

    OBJECTIVE: To investigate the possible role of chromatin texture parameters, nuclear morphology, DNA ploidy and clinical functional status in discriminating benign from malignant adrenocortical tumors (ACT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Forty-eight cases of clinically benign (n=40) and clinically malignant (n=8) ACT with a minimum of 5-years' follow-up were evaluated for chromatin texture parameters (run length, standard deviation, configurable run length, valley, slope, peak and other 21 Markovian features that describe the distribution of the chromatin in the nucleus), nuclear morphology (nuclear area, nuclear perimeter, nuclear maximum and minimum diameter, nuclear shape), and DNA ploidy. Nuclear parameters were evaluated in Feulgen-stained 5 mum paraffin-sections analyzed using a CAS 200 image analyzer. RESULTS: Since ACTs present different biological features in children and adults, patients were divided into two groups: children (15 years). In the group of children DNA ploidy presented a marginal significance (p=0.05) in discriminating ACTs. None of the parameters discriminated between malignant and benign ACT in the adult group. CONCLUSION: ACTs are uncommon and definitive predictive criteria for malignancy remain uncertain, particularly in children. Our data point to DNA content evaluated by image analysis as a new candidate tool for this challenging task.     Cardioprotective effects of sodium glucose cotransporter 2 inhibition in angiotensin II-dependent hypertension are mediated by the local reduction of sympathetic activity and inflammation

    The cardioprotective effects of sodium glucose cotrasponter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors seem to be independent from the effects on glycemic control, through little-known mechanisms. In this study, we investigate whether the cardioprotective effects of empagliflozin, a SGLT2 inhibitor, may be associated with myocardial sympathetic activity and inflammatory cell infiltration in an experimental model of angiotensin II-dependent hypertension. Angiotensin II (Ang II), Ang II plus Empagliflozin, physiological saline, or physiological saline plus empagliflozin were administered to Sprague Dawley rats for two weeks. Blood pressure was measured by plethysmographic method. Myocardial hypertrophy and fibrosis were analysed by histomorphometry, and inflammatory cell infiltration and tyrosine hydroxylase expression, implemented as a marker of sympathetic activity, were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Ang II increased blood pressure, myocardial hypertrophy, fibrosis, inflammatory infiltrates and tyrosine hydroxylase expression, as compared to the control group. Empagliflozin administration prevented the development of myocardial hypertrophy, fibrosis, inflammatory infiltrates and tyrosine hydroxylase overexpression in Ang II-treated rats, without affecting blood glucose and the Ang II-dependent increase in blood pressure. These data demonstrate that the cardioprotective effects of SGLT2 inhibition in Ang II-dependent hypertension may result from the myocardial reduction of sympathetic activity and inflammation and are independent of the modulation of blood pressure and blood glucose levels

    Thermal partition function of photons and gravitons in a Rindler wedge

    The thermal partition function of photons in any covariant gauge and gravitons in the harmonic gauge, propagating in a Rindler wedge, are computed using a local ζ\zeta-function regularization approach. The correct Planckian leading order temperature dependence T4T^4 is obtained in both cases. For the photons, the existence of a surface term giving a negative contribution to the entropy is confirmed, as earlier obtained by Kabat, but this term is shown to be gauge dependent in the four-dimensional case and, therefore is discarded. It is argued that similar terms could appear dealing with any integer spin s≄1s\geq 1 in the massless case and in more general manifolds. Our conjecture is checked in the case of a graviton in the harmonic gauge, where different surface terms also appear, and physically consistent results arise dropping these terms. The results are discussed in relation to the quantum corrections to the black hole entropy.Comment: 29 pages, RevTeX, no figures.     Metric gravity theories and cosmology:II. Stability of a ground state in f(R) theories

    A fundamental criterion of viability of any gravity theory is existence of a stable ground-state solution being either Minkowski, dS or AdS space. Stability of the ground state is independent of which frame is physical. In general, a given theory has multiple ground states and splits into independent physical sectors. All metric gravity theories with the Lagrangian being a function of Ricci tensor are dynamically equivalent to Einstein gravity with a source and this allows us to study the stability problem using methods developed in GR. We apply these methods to f(R) theories. As is shown in 13 cases of Lagrangians the stability criterion works simply and effectively whenever the curvature of the ground state is determined.     Composition and in vitro gas production of whole stems and cell walls of different genotypes of pearl millet and sorghum

    The top three senescent internodes of six genotypes of pearl millet (ICMV 155 Nor 155, ICMV 155 bmr, ICMV 221, ICMH 356, ICMH 94410, NCD 2) and sorghum (CSV 15, CSH 9, local yellow, ICSV 93046, ICSV 89057, ICSV 112) were used to asses the relationship between cell walls and wall components and in vitro gas production. Walls, (nitrogen) N, total soluble sugar contents and gas production in stems of both sorghum and pearl millet were significantly different between genotypes. In pearl millet stems, lignin and esterified p-coumaric acid (pCA) were significantly different between genotypes. In sorghum, N, lignin and phenolic acids—except esterified pCA were significantly different between genotypes. Except at 12 h for sorghum, gas production of walls was significantly different between genotypes and ranked genotypes differently than gas of stems. Soluble sugars in the stems of both pearl millet and sorghum were positively correlated to gas production at 12, 24, and 36 h, and vice versa for cell walls. In pearl millet, phenolic acids were not significantly correlated with either gas production of whole stems or that of walls, with the exception of etherified pCA of walls. On the other hand, in sorghum, etherified pCA of stems and walls were negatively correlated with gas at 72 and 96 h. The significant differences of gas production between genotypes, different ranking of genotypes with the progression of the fermentation, and the gas production differences between whole stems and walls indicate the differential effect of soluble sugars and of cell wall type on the digestibility of whole stems. This study points out the need to look in greater details at the relationship and the interactions between the effects of soluble and structural carbohydrates in stovers and the genetic base that determines it. Such studies could identify the most adequate combination of traits useful in crop improvement programs taking into account feed value of stover of dual-purpose crops
