    THE EVALUATION OF HIGH SCHOOL 12TH GRADE STUDENTS’ OPINIONS ABOUT THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES

    The present study is conducted to identify 12th grade high school students’ opinions about the effectiveness of physical education classes. In the study, the interview method of qualitative research method is used. In order to obtain data of the study, open-ended questions that are designed to evaluate students' views and suggestions are used. These questions are following: (1) How do you find the teaching of the lesson, (2) What are the achievements of the course, (3) What are popular and unpopular aspects of the lessons, (4) How do you relate these classes with other courses, (5) What are your recommendations in terms of how to do the class. The research group was formed with 50 students who are studying in the 12th grade in official high schools depending on Gaziantep Directorate of National Education. Content analysis is applied to the data obtained from student’s opinions. Consequently, considering high school 12th grade students’ opinions about physical education classes, it can be said that physical education classes are effective and efficient. It is identified that students think physical education classes are important as they contribute to the development of physical, psychological and social aspects of human beings. However, the number of class hours and environmental conditions are not sufficient enough so this affects the effectiveness of the classes negatively.  Article visualizations

    Adenomyotic cyst of the uterus associated with pelvic pain: A case report

    Adenomyotic cysts of the uterus are extremely rare and this case report is to document an adenomyotic cyst of the uterus associated with pelvic pain. A 27-year old nulliparous patient admitted to the hospital with the complaint of dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and pain in the right pelvic region for the last 3 months. Transvaginal ultrasonographic examination revealed a 50 × 36 mm intramural cystic lesion on the right region of the corpus uteri. Hysteroscopic examination showed that it did not deteriorate the endometrial cavity. During laparatomy dissection of the uterine wall revealed 5 cm cystic lesion that was excised circumferentially protecting the surrounding myometrial tissue. The definitive pathology report came out as adenomyotic tissue. Imaging techniques are critical in differential diagnosis of adenomyotic cysts and to choose the appropriate intervention. Medical therapy or surgical intervention like excision of the cyst or hysterectomy may be the choices of treatment. J Clin Exp Invest 2014; 5 (1): 100-10

    Model based process optimization of enhanced wastewater treatment plants

    Avrupa Birliği’ne uyum sürecinde ele alınan atık sorunu kapsamında, alıcı ortamlara yapılacak deşarjlarda konvansiyonal parametrelerin yanısıra azot ve fosfor (besi maddesi) parametrelerinin de belli standart değerlerin altına indirilmesi gerekli hale gelmiştir. Bu nedenle, “Kentsel Atıksu Arıtımı Yönetmeliği, 2006” ile uyum sürecinde olan ülkemizde azot ve fosfor standartları mevzuatımıza dâhil edilmiştir. “Kentsel Atıksu Arıtımı Yönetmeliği, 2006” kapsamında mevcut tesislerin besi maddesi giderimine yönelik olarak geliştirilmesi, yeni kurulacak tesislerin ise besi maddesi giderecek şekilde en uygun arıtma teknolojisi kavramı çerçevesinde boyutlandırılması gereklidir. Besi maddesi giderimine yönelik en uygun arıtma teknolojisi biyolojik prosesler, bunlar arasında en ekonomik çözüm ise aktif çamur sistemleri olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bu çalışma aktif çamur tesislerinin, Avrupa Birliği normlarında performansını sağlayabilecek optimum tasarım ve işletme süreçlerinin değerlendirilmesini amaçlamaktadır. Bu kapsamda, bir örnek olarak ele alınan İstanbul Su ve Kanalizasyon İdaresi (İSKİ) Paşaköy İleri Biyolojik Atıksu Arıtma Tesisi’nde mevcut durumda atıksu karakterizasyonu ve sistem performansı deneysel olarak belirlenmiş, elde edilen bilgiler kullanılarak sürekli kullanıma uygun olacak model-bazlı tasarım ile işletme simülasyon programları hazırlanmış ve işletme optimizasyonu çerçevesinde çıkış besi maddesi konsantrasyonlarının düşürülmesi amacıyla işletme senaryoları oluşturularak önerilerde bulunulmuştur. Yürütülen senaryo analizleri ile, havalandırma tanklarındaki çözünmüş oksijen seviyelerinin uygun ayarlanması, tesisin geri devir denitrifikasyonu prensibi yerine A2O veya UCT tipi sistem şeklinde işletilmesi ile sistem veriminin arttırılabileceği ve dolayısıyla çıkış besi maddesi konsantrasyonlarının azaltılabileceği belirlenmiştir. Anahtar Kelimeler: İleri biyolojik atıksu arıtma tesisi, atıksu karakterizasyonu, model-bazlı tasarım, işletme optimizasyonu.The Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive published in the Official Gazette No. 26047 of 08.01.2006 was adapted from the “The Council Directive (91/271/EEC)” concerning urban waste-water treatment was accepted in European Union Countries, which imposes enforcements about the collection and treatment of wastewater. This directive requires that also nitrogen and phosphorus (nutrients) to be removed together with the conventional parameters. In this context, it is very important to follow and apply the technological advances while the harmonization of legislations in Turkey with European Union Standards. Mathematical models are frequently used for the design and optimum operation of wastewater treatment systems. In order to use the activated sludge models for the process design and control, it is crucial to understand the behavior of complex biological reactions under steady and dynamic conditions. The initial step for the use of models should be, a model calibration according to the data obtained from the treatment plant and an analysis of the behavior of the treatment plant under dynamic influent and environmental conditions (Vanrolleghem et al., 2003). After the calibration of the prepared model according to the operational conditions of the treatment plant, the model can be used for the optimization of the plant, meeting the effluent quality standards, minimizing operational costs and for developing appropriate process control strategies. On the other hand the effect of changes in the process conditions on the model stability should be taken into consideration (Insel et al., 2007). The aim of this study was to evaluate the optimum design and operational criteria of advanced biological wastewater treatment plants by applying international monitoring and evaluation mechanisms that will increase the performance to norms required in the European Union. Accordingly, İSKİ Paşaköy Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant (ABWWTP) was chosen as a model plant and in the first stage on influent wastewater characterization, chemical oxygen demand (COD) fractionation and performance of the activated sludge system were experimentally determined. In the second stage, using the dimensions of the İSKİ Paşaköy ABWWTP units and the experimentally determined operational parameters, model calibration studies were conducted. On this context, theoretical parameters of model-based design and operational simulation programs applied for the plant were evaluated. In the last stage of the study, for operational optimization, according to the results obtained from the experimental and simulation studies conducted at İSKİ Paşaköy ABWWTP, operational scenarios were developed and suggestions were made. In the scenario analysis reduction of effluent phosphorus and total nitrogen concentration was aimed and the effect of (i) the aeration system control, (ii) recycle denitrification (iii) influent VFA concentration was analyzed and the effect of (iv) different system configurations was evaluated. The results of statistical data analysis of wastewater characterization studies conducted at İSKİ Paşaköy Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant aiming nitrogen and phosphorus removal revealed that due to low influent Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), Total Phosphorus (TP) and Volatile Fatty Acids (VFA) concentrations, high efficiencies of biological phosphorus removal was not achievable. According to the scenario analysis performed for the treatment plant it has been concluded that it is possible to increase the removal efficiency of the system and achieve lower effluent total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations by setting the dissolved oxygen levels to appropriate levels and operating the systems as an A2O or a UCT type system instead of a recycle denitrification system. It has been concluded that if the scenario analyses were applied it is not possible to meet the European Union Effluent Quality Standard of 1.0 mg/l for the phosphorus parameter. Experimental and model based studies have to be conducted for the installation of a fermentation process together with different system configurations that are required to meet the effluent quality standard by biological treatment. Keywords: Paşaköy wastewater treatment plant, wastewater characterization, model based optimization, process control

    Post-discharge heart failure monitoring program in Turkey: Hit-PoinT

    Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy and feasibility of an enhanced heart failure (HF) education with a 6-month telephone follow- up program in post-discharge ambulatory HF patients. Methods: The Hit-Point trial was a multicenter, randomized, controlled trial of enhanced HF education with a 6-month telephone follow-up program (EHFP) vs routine care (RC) in patients with HF and reduced ejection fraction. A total of 248 patients from 10 centers in various geographical areas were randomized: 125 to EHFP and 123 to RC. Education included information on adherence to treatment, symptom recognition, diet and fluid intake, weight monitoring, activity and exercise training. Patients were contacted by telephone after 1, 3, and 6 months. The primary study endpoint was cardiovascular death. Results: Although all-cause mortality didn't differ between the EHFP and RC groups (p=NS), the percentage of cardiovascular deaths in the EHFP group was significantly lower than in the RC group at the 6-month follow up (5.6% vs. 8.9%, p=0.04). The median number of emergency room visits was one and the median number of all cause hospitalizations and heart failure hospitalizations were zero. Twenty-tree percent of the EHFP group and 35% of the RC group had more than a median number of emergency room visits (p=0.05). There was no significant difference regarding the median number of all-cause or heart failure hospitalizations. At baseline, 60% of patients in EHFP and 61% in RC were in NYHA Class III or IV, while at the 6-month follow up only 12% in EHFP and 32% in RC were in NYHA Class III or IV (p=0.001). Conclusion: These results demonstrate the potential clinical benefits of an enhanced HF education and follow up program led by a cardiologist in reducing cardiovascular deaths and number of emergency room visits with an improvement in functional capacity at 6 months in post-discharge ambulatory HF patients.Türk Kardiyoloji Derneği Kalp Yetmezliği Çalışma Grub

    Regarding the profile of the students and their habits, learning can be shaped according to students’ life styles and thus the quality of learning and teaching can be increased by meeting students’ needs. The integration of technology affected the language learning positively by offering various activities which can be done inside or outside class in each skill. Thus, mobile learning has the potential to increase the opportunities to make teaching and learning available beyond the traditional classroom. The main aim of this study was to develop a mobile technologies course delivered online and explore the effects of this online course designed on Mobile Technologies on the use of ICT skills, attitudes and views of EFL Instructors. This study is designed according to Mixed method research. In this study, participants were selected through convenient sampling and the data were collated through a questionnaire used before and after the implementation of the online course, semi-structured interviews and class observations. The quantitative data were analyzed through means and percentages and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The results of this study indicated the online training course on mobile technologies had a positive impact on the use of ICT skills and views of EFL teachers in general. Besides, attending the Mobile Technologies Course delivered online was very beneficial and effective for the instructors in that it helped them to develop their skills on the use of mobile Technologies in English Language teaching.Ph.D. - Doctoral Progra

    With the increased development of technology, English language learning and teaching have been affected profoundly. The high demand on the use of mobile devices like smart phones, Ipads, etc in daily life has given a rise to mobile learning in foreign language learning. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in vocabulary achievement level of students in keeping mobile-based and paper-based vocabulary notebooks in English language learning. The study was designed according to pre-post control group quasi-experimental design. There were 20 students in each group whose English level was B2 at Bilkent University School of English Language. Data were collected through a vocabulary achievement test which was used as both pre and post tests. To collect in-depth information related to using mobile-based vocabulary notebooks, semi-structured interviews were also conducted with some students in the experimental group at the end of the study. The results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics techniques. The quantitative data were analyzed through Mixed- ANOVA and independent samples Mann-Whitney U test and the qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The results of quantitative data indicated that mobile-based vocabulary notebooks have positive effects on students’ vocabulary achievement and the qualitative data analysis supported this finding as well.     Mödrar och patriarkat : – En kvalitativ studie med fokus på mammor i familjer med starkt patriarkala traditioner.

    The aim of this study was to investigate how mothers in families with strong patriarchal traditions see their role as a mother and as a woman. The study is built upon two main questions: What are the expectations of your family and your immediate environment on you as a mother and as a woman? And what does “honour” mean for you as a mother and as a woman? In our paper we had as a starting point a gender perspective that was further on applied in defining our research question. We are also giving an account of the phenomenological perspective that we also had as a basis of our work. We interviewed six mothers living in families with strong patriarchal traditions. There were half-structured interviews according to an interview guide, with half open questions. We followed the qualitative method. The results show that “honour” is a basic norm for the mothers, that they have difficulties to even imagine living a life without honour. For all of our informants, honour means not to have sexual relationships with several men, and to keep a woman’s virginity until she gets married. Avoiding bad rumours that may lead to shame is an important part of the mothers’ lives. As women, the mothers are forced to take into consideration their husbands’ and older family members’ opinions. It is the mothers’ duty to educate their children to behave in “the right” way. According to our informants, a mother should be caring and in charge of the household work

    Bu çalışmada, yabancı dil eğitimi ve öğretiminde teknoloji entegrasyonuna yönelik olarak Türkiye’de yapılmış eğitim araştırmalarının bir sentezinin sunulması amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda elektronik veri kaynakları kullanılarak 2005-2016 yıllarını kapsayan kapsamlı bir alanyazın incelemesi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Tarama sonucunda bu çalışma kapsamında toplam kırk yedi çalışmaya (araştırma makalesi ve tez) ulaşılmıştır. Bu çalışmalarda öne çıkan bulguların betimsel ve içerik analizi, yabancı dil eğitiminde teknoloji entegrasyonu üzerine Türkiye’de yapılmış araştırmaların şu üç ana tema altında toplandığını göstermiştir: 1. Öğrenci başarısı, 2. Öğrenci ve Öğretmen Algıları, 3. Öğretmen Eğitimi.     A Review Study on the Integration of Technology into Foreign Language Education in Turkey

    The main objective of this study was to portray a synthesis of educational research in Turkey in terms of technology integration into foreign language teaching and learning in Turkey. To this end, a comprehensive literature search was done, which was limited to the years between 2005 and 2016 via electronic databases. As a result of this search, forty-seven resources including both articles and thesis dissertations were found. The descriptive and content analysis of the findings in these studies suggested three main themes to represent research on technology integration into foreign language education in Turkey. These are 1. Student Achievement, 2. Student and Teacher Perceptions, 3. Teacher Education. It is considered that the results of this review study will provide insights and directions for researchers and practitioners in the field of technology integration into foreign language education in Turke
