Peculiarities of the Tail-Withdrawal Reflex Circuit in Aplysia: a Model Study
The circuit of the tail-withdrawal reflex in Aplysia opens up possibilities to construct model
systems allowing researchers to effectively investigate simple forms of learning and memory.
Using the Python interface of the NEURON software, we simulated this reflex circuit and
studied various characteristics of the latter. The phenomenon of spike frequency adaptation
(SFA) and the period-adding bifurcation of the minimum were found in sensory neurons,
when the latter were stimulated by square-wave stimuli. In all neurons of the circuit, variation
of the stimulus strength first increased and then decreased the number of spikes in a burst.
In addition, with decreases in the number of stimulated sensory neurons, a subliminal firing
other than that in an intact burst appeared at the outputs of interneurons and motor neuron.
Moreover, the potentials produced in the motor neuron induced corresponding oscillations
of the muscle fiber force, which was indicative of a procedure of excitement-contraction
coupling in the tail part of Aplysia. Finally, upon alteration of the conductance of synapses
between interneurons and motoneuron, the duration of long-lasting responses increased

Gradient Trigger Mechanisms Related to Bistability Regimes in a Leech Heartbeat Model
We studied bursting patterns underlied by bifurcation phenomena and chaotic spiking in a
computational leech heartbeat model. We observed the gradient physical properties of the
ISI trains and amplitude (shift of the membrane potential) when the parameter gleak was
mildly changed and found different bistable areas. The resulting computation implies that (i)
classification of the intensity of the input information is feasible in this regime, (ii) a neuron’s
working level can be marked by its range in a typical bifurcation, and (iii) there are invisible
triggers underlying subtle mechanisms in the model.
Spike Timing-Dependent Plasticity in the CA1 Pyramidal Neuron in a Modeled Hippocampal Circuit
Spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) plays an important role in sculpting informationstoring circuits in the hippocampus, since motor learning and memory are thought to be
closely linked with this classical plasticity. To further understand the information delivery in
a hippocampus circuit, we build a computational model to study the potential role of linear
changes in the synaptic weight and synaptic number. Several key results have been obtained:
(i) Changes in the synaptic weight and numbers lead to different long-term modification; (ii)
the first paired spiking from two neurons significantly influences the adjusted subsequent
paired spiking; the pre-post spiking pair strengthens the following paired spiking; however,
the post-pre spiking pair depresses the subsequent spiking; (iii) when the synaptic weight and
synaptic numbers are changed, the interval of the first spiking pair may undergo reduction,
and (iv) when we stimulate a stellate neuron weakly or decrease the capacitance of CA1
pyramidal neuron, LTP is more easily produced than LTD; on the contrary, LTD is more easily
produced in an opposite situation; increase in the synaptic numbers can promote activation of
the CA1 pyramidal neuron.
Dynamic Properties of Purkinje Cells Having Different Electrophysiological Parameters: A Model Study
Simple spikes and complex spikes are two distinguishing features in neurons of the cerebellar
cortex; the motor learning and memory processes are dependent on these firing patterns.
In our research, the detailed firing behaviors of Purkinje cells were investigated using a
computer compartmental neuronal model. By means of application of numerical stimuli,
the abundant dynamical properties involved in the multifarious firing patterns, such as the
Max-Min potentials of each spike and period-adding/period-doubling bifurcations, appeared.
Neuronal interspike interval (ISI) diagrams, frequency diagrams, and current-voltage diagrams
for different ions were plotted. Finally, Poincare mapping was used as a theoretical method
to strongly distinguish timing of the above firing patterns. Our simulation results indicated
that firing of Purkinje cells changes dynamically depending on different electrophysiological
parameters of these neurons, and the respective properties may play significant roles in the
formation of the mentioned characteristics of dynamical firings in the coding strategy for
information processing and learning.Генерація простих та складних потенціалів дії є специфіч-

Green's function approach to the magnetic properties of the kagome antiferromagnet
The Heisenberg antiferromagnet is studied on the kagom\'e lattice by
using a Green's function method based on an appropriate decoupling of the
equations of motion. Thermodynamic properties as well as spin-spin correlation
functions are obtained and characterize this system as a two-dimensional
quantum spin liquid. Spin-spin correlation functions decay exponentially with
distance down to low temperature and the calculated missing entropy at T=0 is
found to be . Within the present scheme, the specific heat exhibits
a single peak structure and a dependence at low temperature.Comment: 6 (two-column revtex4) pages, 5 ps figures. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Freezing and large time scales induced by geometrical frustration
We investigate the properties of an effective Hamiltonian with competing
interactions involving spin and chirality variables, relevant for the
description of the {\it trimerized} version of the spin-1/2 {\it kagome}
antiferromagnet. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that
remarkable behaviors develop at very low temperatures. Through an {\it order by
disorder} mechanism, the low-energy states are characterized by a dynamical
freezing of the chiralities, which decouples the lattice into ``dimers'' and
``triangles'' of antiferromagnetically coupled spins. Under the presence of an
external magnetic field, the particular topology of the chiralities induces a
very slow spin dynamics, reminiscent of what happens in ordinary spin glasses.Comment: 12 pages, 13 figure
On the magnetism of Ln{2/3}Cu{3}Ti{4}O{12} (Ln = lanthanide)
The magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the complete
LnCuTiO series were investigated. Here stands for
the lanthanides La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb. %Most
of the compounds were prepared as single phase polycrystalline powder %without
any traces of impurities. Marginal amounts of %impurities were
detected Gd, Er, and Tm. %Significant amounts of impurity phases were
found for Ce and Yb. All the samples investigated crystallize in the
space group with lattice constants that follow the lanthanide
contraction. The lattice constant of the Ce compound reveals the presence of
Ce leading to the composition CeCuTiO. From
magnetic susceptibility and electron-spin resonance experiments it can be
concluded that the copper ions always carry a spin and order
antiferromagnetically close to 25\,K. The Curie-Weiss temperatures can
approximately be calculated assuming a two-sublattice model corresponding to
the copper and lanthanide ions, respectively. It seems that the magnetic
moments of the heavy rare earths are weakly coupled to the copper spins, while
for the light lanthanides no such coupling was found. The moments remain
paramagnetic down to the lowest temperatures, with the exception of the Tm
compound, which indicates enhanced Van-Vleck magnetism due to a non-magnetic
singlet ground state of the crystal-field split manifold. From
specific-heat measurements we accurately determined the antiferromagnetic
ordering temperature and obtained information on the crystal-field states of
the rare-earth ions. The heat-capacity results also revealed the presence of a
small fraction of Ce in a magnetic state.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figure
Mass measurements of neutron-deficient Y, Zr, and Nb isotopes and their impact on rp and νp nucleosynthesis processes

For further details please see: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/Using isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou, the masses of 82Zr and 84Nb were measured for the first time with an uncertainty of ∼10 keV, and the masses of 79Y, 81Zr, and 83Nb were re-determined with a higher precision. The latter are significantly less bound than their literature values. Our new and accurate masses remove the irregularities of the mass surface in this region of the nuclear chart. Our results do not support the predicted island of pronounced low α separation energies for neutron-deficient Mo and Tc isotopes, making the formation of Zr–Nb cycle in the rp-process unlikely. The new proton separation energy of 83Nb was determined to be 490(400) keV smaller than that in the Atomic Mass Evaluation 2012. This partly removes the overproduction of the p-nucleus 84Sr relative to the neutron-deficient molybdenum isotopes in the previous νp-process simulations.Peer reviewe
Susceptibility and dilution effects of the kagome bi-layer geometrically frustrated network. A Ga-NMR study of SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19)
We present an extensive gallium NMR study of the geometrically frustrated
kagome bi-layer compound SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19) (Cr^3+, S=3/2) over a broad
Cr-concentration range (.72<p<.95). This allows us to probe locally the kagome
bi-layer susceptibility and separate the intrinsic properties due to the
geometric frustration from those related to the site dilution. Our major
findings are: 1) The intrinsic kagome bi-layer susceptibility exhibits a
maximum in temperature at 40-50 K and is robust to a dilution as high as ~20%.
The maximum reveals the development of short range antiferromagnetic
correlations; 2) At low-T, a highly dynamical state induces a strong wipe-out
of the NMR intensity, regardless of dilution; 3) The low-T upturn observed in
the macroscopic susceptibility is associated to paramagnetic defects which stem
from the dilution of the kagome bi-layer. The low-T analysis of the NMR
lineshape suggests that the defect can be associated with a staggered
spin-response to the vacancies on the kagome bi-layer. This, altogether with
the maximum in the kagome bi-layer susceptibility, is very similar to what is
observed in most low-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlated systems; 4) The
spin glass-like freezing observed at T_g=2-4 K is not driven by the
dilution-induced defects.Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, revised version resubmitted to PRB Minor
