Microvascular autologous submandibular gland transplantation in severe cases of keratoconjunctivitis sicca
Dry eye syndrome is a relatively common disease of the tears and ocular surfaces that results in discomfort, visual disturbance, and tear film instability with possible damage to the ocular surfaces. Microvascular submandibular gland (SMG) transfer offers a surgical alternative for a permanent autologous substitution of tears using the basal secretion of a transplanted SMG. Long-term follow-up reveals that this technique is a lasting and effective solution for patients with severe dry eye syndrome. The uncomfortable symptoms were relieved, and the frequency of use of pharmaceutical tear substitutes was reduced. Objective examination showed significant improvement in tear film and some features of ocular surface such as breakup time of tear film and corneal staining. Patients may suffer from obstruction of Wharton's duct or epiphora after surgery. Activation of secretion-related receptors could improve the early hypofunction of the denervated SMG and prevent the duct obstruction. Reduction surgery, partial SMG transplantation, uses of atropine gel or Botulinum toxin A could be the choices of treatment for epiphora.PubMed0153
Inverse Ising effect and Ising magnetoresistance
Ising (Zeeman-type) spin-orbit coupling (SOC) generated by in-plane inverse
asymmetry has attracted considerable attention, especially in Ising
superconductors and spin-valley coupling physics. However, many unconventional
observations and emerging physical phenomena remain to be elucidated. Here, we
theoretically study the spin texture of {\sigma}_z (spin angular momentum
projection along z) induced by Ising SOC in 1Td WTe2, and propose an
unconventional spin-to-charge conversion named inverse Ising effect, in which
the directions of the spin current, spin polarization and charge current are
not orthogonal. In particular, we predict the Ising magnetoresistance, whose
resistance depends on the out-of-plane magnetic momentum in WTe2/ferromagnetic
heterostructure. The Ising magnetoresistance is believed to be an interesting
counterpart to the well studied spin Hall magnetoresistance. Our predictions
provide promising way to spin-momentum locking and spin-charge conversion based
on emerging Ising SOC
Two NHX-type transporters from Helianthus tuberosus improve the tolerance of rice to salinity and nutrient deficiency stress.
The NHX-type cation/H+ transporters in plants have been shown to mediate Na+ (K+ )/H+ exchange for salinity tolerance and K+ homoeostasis. In this study, we identified and characterized two NHX homologues, HtNHX1 and HtNHX2 from an infertile and salinity tolerant species Helianthus tuberosus (cv. Nanyu No. 1). HtNHX1 and HtNHX2 share identical 5'- and 3'-UTR and coding regions, except for a 342-bp segment encoding 114 amino acids (L272 to Q385 ) which is absent in HtNHX2. Both hydroponics and soil culture experiments showed that the expression of HtNHX1 or HtNHX2 improved the rice tolerance to salinity. Expression of HtNHX2, but not HtNHX1, increased rice grain yield, harvest index, total nutrient uptake under K+ -limited salt-stress or general nutrient deficiency conditions. The results provide a novel insight into NHX function in plant mineral nutrition
Revisiting Data-Free Knowledge Distillation with Poisoned Teachers
Data-free knowledge distillation (KD) helps transfer knowledge from a
pre-trained model (known as the teacher model) to a smaller model (known as the
student model) without access to the original training data used for training
the teacher model. However, the security of the synthetic or
out-of-distribution (OOD) data required in data-free KD is largely unknown and
under-explored. In this work, we make the first effort to uncover the security
risk of data-free KD w.r.t. untrusted pre-trained models. We then propose
Anti-Backdoor Data-Free KD (ABD), the first plug-in defensive method for
data-free KD methods to mitigate the chance of potential backdoors being
transferred. We empirically evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed ABD in
diminishing transferred backdoor knowledge while maintaining compatible
downstream performances as the vanilla KD. We envision this work as a milestone
for alarming and mitigating the potential backdoors in data-free KD. Codes are

UPANets: Learning from the Universal Pixel Attention Networks
Among image classification, skip and densely-connection-based networks have
dominated most leaderboards. Recently, from the successful development of
multi-head attention in natural language processing, it is sure that now is a
time of either using a Transformer-like model or hybrid CNNs with attention.
However, the former need a tremendous resource to train, and the latter is in
the perfect balance in this direction. In this work, to make CNNs handle global
and local information, we proposed UPANets, which equips channel-wise attention
with a hybrid skip-densely-connection structure. Also, the extreme-connection
structure makes UPANets robust with a smoother loss landscape. In experiments,
UPANets surpassed most well-known and widely-used SOTAs with an accuracy of
96.47% in Cifar-10, 80.29% in Cifar-100, and 67.67% in Tiny Imagenet. Most
importantly, these performances have high parameters efficiency and only
trained in one customer-based GPU. We share implementing code of UPANets in

BMP7 Gene involved in nonsyndromic orofacial clefts in Western han Chinese
Background: Nonsyndromic orofacial clefts (NSOCs) are the most common craniofacial birth defects with complex etiology in which multiple genes and environmental exposures are involved. Bone morphogenetic protein 7
(BMP7), as a member of the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily, has been shown to play
crucial roles in palate and other orofacial ectodermal appendages development in animal models.
Material and Methods: This study was designed to investigate the possible associations between
BMP7
gene
and the NSOCs (221 case-parent trios) in Western Han Chinese. Five tagSNPs at BMP7, rs12438, rs6099486,
rs6127973, rs230188 and rs6025469 were picked and tried to cover the entire gene. In order to identify the contribution of
BMP7
gene to the etiology of NSOCs, we performed several statistical analysis from different aspects
including transmission disequilibrium test (TDT), pairwise linkage disequilibrium (LD), parent-of-origin effect
and Chi-squared/Fisher’s exact tests.
Results: Rs6127973 G allele and G/G homozygotes were over-transmitted for both NSOCs (
P
=0.005 and
P
=0.011,
respectively) and NSCL/P (
P
=0.0061 and
P
=0.011, respectively), rs6127973 G allele was also paternally over-
transmitted for both NSOCs (
P
=0.0061) and NSCL/P (
P
=0.011).
Conclusions: This study suggested that rs6127973 may be a risk factor of being NSOCs and confirmed the role
of
BMP7
gene in orofacial deformity from Western Han Chinese, which will also supply scientific evidence for
future research and genetic counseling
