Cultivar and Year-to-Year Variation of Phytosterol Content in Rye (Secale cereale L.)

Intake of phytosterols (and -stanols) has been shown to decrease the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and thus protect against development of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, studies on the cultivar and year-to-year variation in phytosterol content in rye grains have been performed. The phytosterol content and composition of different rye cultivars, grown under identical conditions on the same field in three consecutive years, were analyzed. Both cultivar and year-to-year variation in sterol content were statistically significant (p < 0.0001). The total sterol content varied from 1007 ± 21 mg/kg in the highest yielding cultivar, Tsulpan 3, to 761 ± 10 mg/kg in the lowest yielding cultivar (Amando in the 1999 harvest). Because the meteorological conditions varied substantially between the different years, it was possible to deduce the impact of varying weather conditions on phytosterol content in the different cultivars. The studied cultivars had all the lowest phytosterol contents in the dry and warm harvest season of 1999. Although there were statistically significant cultivar and year-to-year variations in the sterol composition (p < 0.0001), these were only between 2 and 4% of the total sterol content

Treball Final de Màster Universitari en Direcció d'Empreses / Master in Management. Codi: SRO011. Curs acadèmic 2017-2018Purpose The main objective of this study was to propose improvements, by using change management insights, to help ensure the success of the project reorganization for the case company. Also, to analyze how changes can be managed within a project with the objective of increasing the efficiency and commitment with the project targets by improving coordination and having more clear roles and responsibilities. Methodology In this study I have used the Action Research methodology as an approach to obtain my objective. Action research is usually defined as research in action, where the idea is to use a scientific approach to study the resolution of organizational issues together with those who experience these issues. To carry out the analysis, I resorted to “The Change Kaleidoscope”, a framework for implementing change in organizations, that is characterized by providing both the available range of implementing options and the analysis of contextual features. Outcome Analysis of the initial state resulted in suggested improvements of the coordination and information flow. Secondly, some of the improvements were implemented and feedback was collected to initiate further improvements with the objective of creating a well-coordinated and efficient project organization. As a result of the implied changes, an improvement in the progress of the overall execution of the VDU1 Revamp project was detected as well as an improvement of the managerial and functional cooperation. There are still improvements to be made in the project organization in terms of communication and people management

Seasonal Changes in the Tropical Atlantic Circulation: Observation and Simulation of the Guinea Dome

    Get PDF
The Guinea Dome is a permanent, quasi-stationary feature on the eastern side of the thermal ridge extending zonally across the tropical North Atlantic. The dome is a part of the large-scale near-surface flow fields associated with the North Equatorial Current, the North Equatorial Countercurrent and the North Equatorial Undercurrent. In the present study, historical and recently obtained hydrographic data are combined to investigate the thermohaline structure and geostrophic flow field in the vicinity of the dome. It is shown that the Guinea Dome exists throughout the year both in subthermocline and thermocline layers, that it has a corresponding cyclonic geostrophic flow, and that seasonal changes occur with respect to its vertical structure, horizontal extent, and position. The observational results are then compared with simulations from a general circulation model of the tropical Atlantic. A seven-year simulation forced by observed monthly winds is run to compute a monthly climatology. The model adequately simulates the Guinea Dome with respect to its structure, flow field, and seasonal variability
