Abstract In Cuba the United Fruit Company acted as a sugar, exceptional situation to a certain point within the banana specialization traced the profile of the company on a continental scale. The study proposed here on the practices of the Company in Cuba, in particular with regard to its handling of labor and industrial relations, helps to clarify some constants of the business conduct of the United in its various areas of operation.En Cuba la United Fruit actuó como una empresa azucarera, situación hasta cierto punto excepcional dentro de la especialización bananera que trazó el perfil de esa empresa a escala continental. In 1878 the Cuban economy faced serious difficulties. The devastation caused by the first war of independence was aggravated by the negative trend affecting Cuba's staples in the international market. These economic problems ranked high among those that the Spanish administration was excepted to addres at the time, in introducing reforms in the colonial regime. Producción en masa del azúcar cubano, 1899-1929: Economías de escala y elección de técnicas

Editada en la Universidad Carlos IIICiertos cambios tecnológicos dotaron a Cuba de una de las industrias azucareras más avanzadas del mundo en la primera mitad del presente siglo. En este trabajo mostramos cuantitativamente que las técnicas de producción en la fabricación de azúcar, como en muchas otras industrias de elaboración, experimentaron enormes incrementos en sus escalas óptimas debido a la adopción de tecnologías de proceso continuo y de producción en masa. En Estados Unidos estas mismas tecnologías de proceso continuo fueron las que anunciaron la revolución en la gestión administrativa al estilo Chandler. En Cuba, la gran fábrica azucarera de comienzo de siglo, para adoptar una perspectiva global, no era el latifundio de antaño; era un elemento de la gran empresa industrial del siglo XX, e indicaba participación global y liderazgo industrial en las técnicas recientemente transformadas de fabricación del azúcar.Technological changes gave Cuba one of the most technically advanced cañe sugar industries in the worid in the first part of this century. In this paper, we show quantitatívely that production techniques in sugar manufacturing, as in many other processing industries, underwent enormous increases in their optimal scales due to the adoption of continuous-processing technologies and mass production. These same continuous- Processing technologies were those which heralded the managerial revolution á la Chandler. In Cuba, the large tum-of-the-centuiy sugar enterpríse, to take a global pers- Pective, was not the latifundio of antiquity; it was an element of the large industrial encrprise of the twentieth century, and it was a mark of global participation and industrial leadership in the newly transformed techniques of sugar manufacture.Publicad

Los inicios de la industrialización en las Antillas Hispanas

With the worldwide crises of 1929 as a starting point, industrialization becomes the dominating trend in Latin American economies. Though the Spanish Antilles were no exception, the process did take on particular notes, both regarding what took place on the continent and within the islands themselves. The industrial development that is barely noticeable in the 1930s, gains momentum under the effects of World War II and accelerates under the aegis of the State in the postwar 1950s, having very distinct profiles in each country.A partir de la crisis mundial de 1929 la industrialización constituye la tendencia dominante en las economías latinoamericanas. Big Push or Big Grab? Railways, Government Activism and Export Growth in Latin America, 1865-1913

Railways were one of the main engines of the Latin American trade boom before 1914. Railway construction often required financial support from local governments, which depended on their fiscal capacity. However, since the main government revenues were trade-related, this generated a two-way feedback between government revenues and railways, with a potential for multiple equilibria.The empirical tests in this article support the hypothesis of such a positive two-way relationship.The main implication of our analysis is that the build-up of state capacity was a necessary condition for railway expansion and also, to a large extent, for export expansion in Latin America during the first globalization

State and sugar in Cuba. The first regulatory experience The history of the Cuban sugar industry between 1926 and 1960 shows an outstanding situation of absolute state regulation over a private sector of economy. This paper explores the origins of such phenomenon studying the disturbances in the international sugar market in the 1920s and the reaction of the sectors related to the Cuban sugar economy, considering its persistent depresssive trend. It also analyses the first steps of the Cuban state intervention in this industry, as well as the consequences of such experience for the definite configuration of the regulatory system.La historia de la industria azucarera cubana entre 1926 y 1960 presenta un cuadro insólito de absoluta regulación estatal sobre un sector privado de la economía. El presente artículo explora los orígenes de dicho fenómeno, a partir de un examen de los trastornos del mercado internacional del azúcar a mediados de la década de 1920 y la reacción de los intereses actuantes en la economía azucarera cubana frente a la persistente tendencia depresiva.
